Depending on your boot loader you may (if using GRUB) have an option to boot 
using old linux, use that that should get you into the system? 

I guess that if you had a bootdisk you would have used that. But if not try 
that.

I am not an expert using Linux by any strtch of the imagination, but some 
quetsions may help.

Did you try and compile using source or rpm?

Did you change anything ion the config except  "removing the option 'make cpu 
idle calls when idle' from the Kernel"?
