I have a mitac 5033 laptop and i fancied my chances of installing mandrake
8.1 on it (i should point out that im a newbie and relative virgin with
linux)as i didnt want to disturb my main machine until i knew what i was
doing.
Anyway the install went great with no problems (despite having been given
only 2 out of the 3 internet disks) however it hung on reboot after install,
aparently this is usual for this POS machine so i had a look around the
laptop sites and found this article http://www.spanbroek.net/mark/laptop
which desribed how to fix it by removing the option 'make cpu idle calls
when idle' from the Kernel
so i followed the intructions and then started to recompile the Kernel and
it went fine for about 20 mins and then stopped here:

this has been sittinng on my laptop screen since 9 o'clock last night
(14/01/02) the drive light is going crazy as if it writing to the hdd, but
its only a 4gig drive so i doubt that,, (i have tried to keep the formatting
as much as it is on my screen)

can anyone help /advise me what to do I dont want to give in and go back to
win me (I have since installed it as a dual boot on my main machine in
frustration)

(laptop spec)
AMD K6-2 380Mhz, 96mb ram, 4gb Hdd, 800x600 dstn screen (in other words
crap)
