Forgive my ignorance, but what use is a base station if you have no
computers running? 

Surely if you have once pc which you are accessing most of the time,
(This could be a router or something like that) you could bung a
wireless card in that and that would solve the problem.

You could of course very easily make a base station out of a 486, for
about a tenner plus card. They don't cost much to run, no fans, no
disks...
