this means you most likely need to modprobe a module - this is dependant on your network card and may or may notbe included on the boot disk. what type of network card do you have? if its an unbranded one, they very often use the realtek 1839 chipset, the NE2000 pci chipset, or the 3com 59x fast etherlink chipset, These use the modules rtl8139.o, ne2k-pci.o, 3c59x.o respectively. Keep this in mind if your installing debian over the network, you will need to load these drivers (either using the command line alt+f2 or using the menu) before you can get your files, so it may be useful to use the larger boot disk collection (5 driver disks) rather than the smalller one which although less fidling doesnt come with as many drivers. One other thing to note, if your using a crossover cable - Linking your laptop to your PC with cat5 but no hub, you need to use a special cable known as a cross over cable. Any good store will sort you out with one, but you can also find plenty of guides a la google if you want to chop one up yourself.
