Do you mean less smooth as in more flickery?  This can be due to a limitation
of your monitor or simply that your XF86Config does not reflect its'
capabilities.  Most monitors nowadays are multisync so you should find out
horizontal and vertical sync range and put that in the appropriate places in
XF86Config.
