I have had good experience with USER 2 in Edinburgh -- South Clerk
St I think, just along from the cinema going toward Cameron Toll shopping
centre. (I don't have any connection with them other than as a a
satisfied customer ;-).)
On the other hand, I haven't bought a secondhand laptop for my own
use, being fortunate enough to be able to afford a VAIO for work. I did
buy one from a friend for a project -- but I have never had time to treat
it seriously. I had no problems with Linux on it (it's a Toshiba I think,
and ridiculously heavy as were most of its generation).
Look at www.linux-laptop.net for tons of useful info and also it
is worth searching the Usenet comp.linux.* groups with Google for reports
of problems and fixes with any machine you think of buying. Most
difficulties are with X and are fixed by buying a machine that is older
than a year or so, so you ought to be OK.
