Erm, happly I am using reiserfs so things are not too bad on that front.
As for repeating it, I can not figure out why it happens.

As for ping it, I have never tried, erm, maybe, but everything else stops,
eg, I was printing and then the printer stopped when it happened. (you
just have to love linux, it started printing again when it rebooted :))
