Ok, after Googling around, I think I can hazard a guess at what's
happening. You system (Debian-2.2) is based on glibc-2.1 (2.1.3 to be
precise). The current (cutting edge) version of glibc is 2.2. The
binutils package (which includes the linker) was altered to reflect some
extra functionality in 2.2, but in (what was believed to be) a compatible
way.

Turns out it wasn't so compatible, and a patch was needed. I suspect
you're getting a conflict between your glibc-2.1 library and the linker
that was used to build the rescue images (or something like that).

The way around this is to use a one-shop boot image. The most obvious
choice is Tom's root&boot disk:

Download and install this onto a floppy --- AFAIK, you'll have to do this
on a Linux machine (such as your work PC). Boot off it at home and you
should have no problems getting in.

Once in do:
  mkdir /my-linux
  mount /dev/hdc1 /my-linux
  chroot /my-linux
  lilo
  exit
  umount /my-linux
init 6 --or-- Ctrl + Alt + Del
  <cross fingers>

Et vola.

(hope this works ;)

Paul.
