<<What is it about music that has pushed some people
over the edge? Can the "right" song, with all the right words and melodies,
bring salvation or healing to the soul?>>
I like a lot of bands, but only a few are ones that I truly connect to.
Nirvana was one of the first. I think I connected more to Kurt than the
music, although the music sure hit home a lot. Alice In Chains are very
special to me...during my freshman year in high school I listened to them
constantly...it was a horrible year and I was going through a serious
depression and they helped me keep my sanity. Radiohead is the band I am
currently "obsessed" with at the time, and they just helped me in the sense
that they got me out of a creative lull. That, and their music just makes me
feel full of life and creative and alive, which is strange, since most people
think Radiohead is a band whose music is good for slitting your wrists to.
But yes, music is therapy.
About the emo thing taking off or not taking off...
Okay, so I had no idea what it was, so I went to this chat room and asked
them what it was, like what made a band "emo" and they pretty much said if I
didn't know, then I should leave the room and never return. So....I never did
find out for sure, but I assumed it was bands who had more emotional lyrics
and stuff. But why I think it wouldn't take off as a genre itself is because
it's very vague...like one person could think one band is emo, yet another
person could disagree. Its not like somone saying "Metallica's rock" and
having somone say "Nuh uh! They're rap!" I mean, you know what category they
fall into. But to me, SDRE is just a rock band, I dont call them "emo" or
"indie" or anything, theyre just rock to me. So I think it would be tough to
distinguish, its not a genre with distinctive guidelines...like punk you can
say "Its loud, fast, and makes you wanna jump around and stuff" and so its
easy to tell whats punk and whats not. With emo, it seems kind of like its up
to the individual. Like I guess what makes a band emo is that they're
generally sort of solemn sounding musically, and their lyrics are kind of
emotional and personal. So, wouldnt bands like Radiohead, Alice In Chains,
Staind, Silverchair be classified as that? I'm sure they're not classified as
that, but you see what I mean? Its kinda tought for a genre to take off and
get popular when youre not sure what bands fall into that category. Its not a
rip on emo, cuz it's not.
But it kinda sucks though, the experience I've had with people who were
supposedly "hardcore emo"...they pretty much said "fuck you" to me because I
didn't "get it" or whatever...I hope a lot of emo fans aren't like that. That
would suck =(
Peace,
Kris.
