I am a long term vi/vim user as well. However, Netbeans 6 with the jvi plugin sure is nice.
For the original poster, one of my staff was developing on Windows and ended up switching to Linux. The reason for that may have been along the lines of what Kevin said about developing on the same platform as we deploy on (we deploy on Linux). It is just easier to shuffle the files around that way and any problems you run into may be more similar between your production and development environments.
