Q: I need to transfer the data from a mainframe to AS/400. What are the techniques used to do this? Do you know any idea of how to use routers to do this job? A: You should not have to be concerned with routers. If present, they are part of the underlying network hardware and should be transparent to you when making a file transfer. What kind of network connectivity, if any, do you have between mainframe and AS/400? If you have any TCP/IP connectivity then see if both mainframe and AS/400 have and allow FTP (file transfer protocol), a very common facility these days. It's FTP on MVS and STRTCPFTP on AS/400. Transferring a file from MVS to OS/400 can be very simple. In most cases use MODE B and TYPE E since both MVS and OS/400 have block/record files in EBCDIC. Visit http://www.nwrdc.fsu.edu/network/tcpftpqa.htm Visit http://www.midrangecomputing.com/anje/article.cfm?id=268&md=19995 If FTP is not available but both ends have SNA connectivity then AFTP (APPC File Transfer Protocol) is a possibility. If both ends do not share TCP/IP or SNA but do have network connectivity in some fashion then MQSeries is another medium for file transfer. You actually said data transfer and not file transfer so MQSeries may be a good solution. If the data to be transferred is in a file, do as above. If data is in a database then there are various and sundry DB2 & UDB mechanisms for such transfer. Visit http://as400bks.rochester.ibm.com/pubs/html/as400/v4r5/ic2924/index.htm?info/db2/rbal1mst85.htm. If data is of reasonable size do not rule out mail, email, LotusNotes, Profs, SMTPNote, etc. You said mainframe and not specifically OS/390, Aix, Linux, VM, VSE, etc. From an MVS system, data can be sent to the AS/400 system using TSO XMIT functions. From a VM system, data can be sent to the AS/400 system using SENDFILE functions. The AS/400 system uses the WRKNETF or RCVNETF command to receive such network files. If you can TN3270 to MVS and TN5250 to AS/400 from a workstation then you can also upload and download data via those terminal emulators. Also look for SEND/RECV or IND$File in docs for emulators. If you don't have any kind of inhouse network connectivity then you could stage the data on the Internet somewhere. If even that is not doable there's always SneakerNet where you cut a tape or cartridge and deliver it in person to the destination site. {smile} Lastly, there are myriad 3rd-party products such as Proginet's CyberFusion, Computer Associates CA-XCOM, Sterling's Connect:Direct, etc., that add scheduling and retry and other facilities to the file transfer. Full disclosure requires I mention I wrote principal portions of Proginet's MVS file handler, added features to Proginet's IND$File Plus and also wrote or maintained portions of IBM's earlier FTP products for MVS, OS/390 & VM/CMS. ======================================================= What do you think about this Expert Question of the Week?
