The same kind of technology that powers instant messaging will be coming to a cell phone near you. Aptly named Presence technology will be able to tell you who has their phone on, who's on a call, and who doesn't really want to be called -- maybe he's at a movie, or she's in the middle of a mud mask. Eventually Presence will be able to tell you where your buddies are, so maybe you can hook up with so-and-so if you see that you're both at the same boring conference and want to steal away for a while. Motorola is working on Presence. Look for it to start popping up in cell phones later this year.
