new NAS systems. The new NAS products represent phase two of a
storage networking initiative that began in February with the launch
of the IBM NAS Gateway and other products intended to provide faster
connections for the new NAS systems.

SEARCH390 USERS IN NEED OF INFORMATION!
==========================================
Search390 user Ahmed needs a breath of fresh information. "I'd like
to have a SuSE 6.4 installed. I tried to to use xdm to support my
x-client, but I did not find any X-server in the package ... Is it
recommended to have Xserver to use xdm?" Practice a random act of
kindness! Help Ahmed.

User Craiglei asks "Can I use a 3270 terminal to connect Linux on a
mainframe?"

If you have answers to either of these questions, post them in our

[4] "BEA's partnership push"
BEA is making nice with just about everyone. The software maker
announced last week partnerships with Computer Associates,

week BEA executives are in Europe meeting with analysts and customers
and announcing more partnerships. But insiders wonder if BEA is
getting a bit too friendly, for partners, that is.

[5] "New report questions Linux server claims"
A major disagreement is brewing about exactly what share of the
server market Linux actually holds. A recently released Gartner
Dataquest report, sponsored by several companies including Microsoft,
found that just 8.6% of server shipments in the U.S. during the third
quarter of 2000 were Linux-based. The report found that 93% of those
server systems shipped were Red Hat Linux, with the remaining 7%
consisting of "other Linux flavors."

[6] "Winnebago takes Linux along for the ride"
Recreational vehicle manufacturer Winnebago is implementing a new
e-mail system based on an IBM eServer running Linux. The company has
adopted the open-standards-based Bynari Insight Server solution,
which enables it to run its e-mail workload on Linux partitions
alongside its mainframe's standard productivity workload.

[7] "Server sales hit the skids"
Server may have slipped by about 4%, according to an IDC report. But,
IBM not only managed to stay on top, revenue for Big Blue jumped 13%
to $3.3 billion. Dell, which came out in fifth place, saw revenue
grow 21%. Sun, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard took a hit, however.

A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web

"Next-generation "buddy lists" could transform phone habits"
It's not your father's buddy list. The same kind of technology that
powers instant messaging will be coming to a cell phone near you.
Aptly named Presence technology will be able to tell you who has
their phone on, who's on a call, and who doesn't really want to be
called -- maybe he's at a movie, or she's in the middle of a mud
mask. Eventually Presence will be able to tell you where your buddies
are, so maybe you can hook up with so-and-so if you see that you're
both at the same boring conference and want to steal away for a
while. Motorola is working on Presence. Look for it to start popping
up in cell phones later this year.
