Jim Keohane It's common for large web sites to consist of many, many individual servers clustered together at the same location. Inter-server communications, failover, workload balancing and performance are greatly benefited. This distributed, but proximate, processing is reminiscent of Sun's trademarked slogan: The Network Is The Computer(TM). The advantages of numerous servers clustered together are obvious. Rack-mounting of servers comprised of cookie-cutter hardware (and maybe software) is another level of improvement. Now picture just one box, a z900, housing those servers. Neither wires nor cables connecting the servers. Some servers implemented as first-level OS'es each in their own logical partition (LPAR). Other servers implemented as second-level z/VM-hosted OS'es. All with virtualized channel-to-channel (CTC) connectivity. None with the need for any adapters with their concomitant latency. IBM's new HiperSockets can recognize that both ends of a transmission reside in same z900 and thus perform the data transfer entirely in memory. Nice! For the new high-speed HiperSockets, an entire TCP/IP network within a z900, IBM should try to trademark: The Computer Is The Network Now add in up to 24 Gigabit Ethernet ports on a z900 for connectivity to the outside world and you'll leave everyone else in your wake! Finally, cluster 40 16-way z900's for nearly 0.8 TBps aggregate data transfer rate! Keep in mind HiperSockets is not available until z/OS V1R2 in October. You do have IBM's OSA-Express LPAR-to-LPAR communication which allows communication between LPARs in the same server by means of a shared Ethernet Open Systems Adapter (OSA). The adapter can immediately detect that the target address is in the same server, and if so, transfer the data back onto the Self-Timed Interconnect (STI) bus thus avoiding the network. The STI bus bandwidth maxes out at a paltry 333 MBps! IBM plans for HiperSockets to recognize the same situation as above but then to be able to transfer the data directly to the other LPAR via memory. No need for an intermediary shared LAN adapter, virtualized or not. HiperSockets, from all indications, will be transparent to current applications. User "dcsmel" posted this in our Developer Forum "I work at a large company that attempted 3 years ago to get rid of all the programs written is SAS, mainly because of the lack of individuals with the knowledge to support the code. Now I find with data mining/data warehouses - we are seeing the rise again of SAS because of its strenghts for data analyses. Any opinions on SAS out there? What are your thoughts on SAS?
