;) It's time to take out the IT crystal ball and see what the future holds for the 390 community. It's been a year now that S/390's successor, the zSeries 900, has been around, and you can expect continual upgrades to zSeries systems to remain a hot topic in 2002. Since IBM is touting the zSeries900 as the ultimate e-business/e-commerce engine, expect to hear a lot more about specific tools designed to aid in the Web-enabling process. WebSphere, in particular will have more than its 15 minutes of fame in 2002. Storage and security will also be big players in the mainframe arena next year. As I look deeper into my crystal ball I see a penguin. Ah, Linux on 390. Get used to hearing that phrase. In 2002, porting the penguin to the mainframe will be a big trend. The mainframe will continue to be the workhorse of corporate computing, but the new role of the zSeries 900 as a Linux host will continue to bring new life and excitement to the market. Linux will make its mark in the 390 community and will prove to be a viable option in the coming year. Those are some of the things I see happening in 2002. Send me an email here and tell me if you think my predictions are right on or way off base. |

| Tip of the Week: |
| There's a maneuver known as "third party FTP" whereby an FTP client can open 2 socket (CONTROL) connections to two different FTP servers to send commands to each (and receive responses) and have them transfer files between themselves over a DATA connection. |
