 From the Editor:

by David Gabel, Executive Technology Editor

You've seen tips on this site, and you've seen us solicit tips from users like you. But you might think, "But I'm not a writer. I'm a programmer." But I'm an electrical engineer, and I'm writing this. You can write a tip for us too. All you need to develop is the desire; you already have everything else you need.

First, think back on all the tricks that you've picked up in your professional life. Some you have learned by just plain hard work; some came from someone else. For example, maybe you know some esoteric Windows keyboard shortcuts. Write those down: You just wrote a tip.

The subject matter will vary depending on your area of expertise. It might have to do with Web-enabling CICS apps. It might be something about setting up routers, or using UDP for bulk file transfer. It might about disabling SNMP or configuring a firewall. Whatever makes your job easier. Our job is to help our members share valuable technical advice with each other. You provide the advice and we'll do the rest.

Once you get the info onto the computer screen and send it in, our job starts. We turn that information into a tip that is easy to understand. We'll edit your tip so that knowledgeable people will understand it. If we don't understand your tip, we'll email you back asking for an explanation, and, in some cases, we'll send you the edited tip to make sure we got it right.

Then we'll post the tip on our site, and you'll get a shot at our tip prizes, and you'll start sharing your hard-earned trick with your peers. You and our entire community win. All because you decided to share some of your knowledge.

Why not do it today?

>> Do you know how to define a printer to JES2? If so, can you help Levi01 with the following: I recently ran out of output classes and was trying to find a way to define multiple printers to one output class and then use the DESTID to send it to the IP address of the printer. Is this possible?

If it is possible and you'd like to share your knowledge with Levi01, please post your response here:

>> search390 user IMS2CICS posted this question in the Developer forum: "Can you provide me some tips for migrating on-line applications from IMS/DC to CICS?"

Check out the great responses posted by your peers, and share your thoughts on the subject.

Tip of the Week:
The Java Messaging Service (JMS) defines a standard API by means of which J2EE v1.3 can interoperate with other messaging systems. Prior to the advent of the EJB 2.0 specification, JMS' usefulness was limited in some implementations -- such as transaction-oriented environments -- because it lacked an integrated, transaction-friendly, message processing component architecture. Instead, message processing was typically handled outside of the application server itself -- usually by another Java application, which acted as a listener and which invoked a session bean upon receiving a message.
