ARE YOUR APPLICATION PROGRAMS EXECUTING? | by Colin Campbell

If you are an applications technician in a mature shop, you probably
have a large number of application load modules. If you need to do
work such as converting to new COBOL, wouldn't it be nice to know how
many of those load modules are actually executing, and how many are
"dead"? This tip explains how to get the information you need with a
systems programmer tool, Isogon Systems' SoftAudit.

IBM AIMS LINUX SERVER AT TELECOMS | News: CNET

IBM announced Tuesday a new eServer based on Linux for the
telecommunications industry. Insiders say IBM hopes the new eServer,
priced lower than its current telecom servers, will increase sales in

HOW TO CONSOLIDATE CRITICAL APPS UNDER LINUX? | by Jan Lahmann

Dear Ask the Expert,
My company runs a critical application across multiple platforms:
multiple NT boxes, a RISC600, open edition and CICS under OS/390.
They are looking to consolidate it under Linux on S/390. We, the
technical staff, are all for it. I know it can be run in an LPAR or
under VM. I am not clear on the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Management wants to know what kind of support they can expect if a
critical application is run under Linux (SuSE).

THE MISSING LINK | Lying down is the job

How far would you be willing to go for the sake of science? Would you
be willing to boldly go ... to bed? Fourteen men are hittin' the hay
in France for three months -- lying down on the job in an experiment
designed to imitate the effects of weightlessness on the human body
during long-haul space travel. It's not the binge bedtime Brian
Wilson put in back in the 1970s, but it will be a little tougher. The
volunteers will rest in a tilt position with their feet slightly
raised -- and everything from eating to bathing to relieving will be
done in that position. Such endurance inertia is quite a physical
challenge, but it pays pretty well too. Each bedfellow will get about
10 grand for his sedentary stint.
