PRACTICE SAFE THREADS | by Jim Keohane

If you think "compare and swap" refers to activities of swinging,
suburban semi-married couples, then you have read one too many of
Jim's tips. Actually it's a technique, usually implemented in
hardware, for safe concurrent updating of shared storage which is
required to get the OTE performance boost. See suggested COBOL, C and
S/390 assembler code examples.

CICS' Open Transaction Environment | by Jim Keohane

OTE (Open Transaction Environment) usually corresponds with Java/JVM
or DB2 performance. A CICS task can now be tagged "threadsafe"
meaning it can run under a CICS open TCB. So why not have
transactions running under open TCBs in CICS regions without JVM and
without DB2 for a little performance boost? Check out this tip for
more on open TCBs.

BEST WEB LINKS | System Software

There are some programs that are crucial to running your system. They
are more than applications, but not a complete operating system;
we've classified them as "System Software." Check out
"CICS/Transaction Monitors" in this Best Web Links section for the
latest in transaction processing.

HOW MUCH MEMORY IS CONSUMED BY CICS? | by Robert Harris

Dear Ask the Expert,
I read your answer about CICS overhead. I have the same question in
regards to combining regions. How can I tell how many MIPS and how
much memory is consumed by just being a region?

SEARCH390.COM DISCUSSION FORUMS | Developer

Are you being forced to use e-business and WebSphere?

This question was recently posted in the Developer discussion forum:
"Price for COBOL V3R1 is about 30% more compared with COBOL V2R2. I
know the base price for COBOL is very low so it's not a big issue.
But we've also seen such an increase for other products like CICS and
DB2. We have seen better price-policies for OS systems like z/OS.e or
Linux/390, but in terms of our main business applications, the price
is growing very fast. Will IBM force us to use e-business and
Websphere?"
