LEAD STORY

XML SPEC TO BENEFIT MAINFRAME, ANGERS SOME | News: ZDNet

The Web's leading standards body this week advanced its seminal XML
specification amid complaints that it was breaking XML's
backwards-compatibility in order to benefit IBM. Among the revisions
is a change that will specifically benefit users of IBM's mainframe
systems -- and that has inspired complaints that IBM is exercising
more than its fair share of influence on the XML working group.

IBM EQUIPS INTEL SERVERS FOR MAINFRAME COMPUTING | News: cw360
Market share of IBM's Intel-based xSeries servers is slowly rising.
Some experts believe the growth is due to Enterprise X-architecture,
a logical extension of X-architecture to enable Intel servers to do
mainframe computing. The theory, says one expert, is that many
companies now only have Intel-based skills among their IT
professionals, and they should not have to acquire new Unix or
mainframe expertise because their Intel-based systems run out of
steam as data volumes grow.

MAINFRAME SALES DROP | News: CNET
Sales of mainframe zSeries servers dropped 8% according to an
earnings report released Wednesday by IBM. In mainframes, sales of
new computing capacity increased 7%, 45% percent of that driven by
customers using the Linux operating system, IBM said.

IBM BOLSTERS WORKFLOW TOOLS FOR WEBSPHERE 5.0 | News: cw360
IBM has released detailed plans to significantly bolster the workflow
capabilities in the upcoming version of WebSphere Application Server
Version 5.0, with the aim of tightening ties between application
development and integration technologies.

COMMON: IBM CONTINUES SERVER CONVERGENCE PUSH | News: Search400.com
IBM continues to push the convergence of its servers and is talking
it up at this week's COMMON user conference. This sharing of
technology means greater availability of applications on the iSeries
and possibly cements a brighter future for the platform.

THE MISSING LINK | Even Steven may be getting a pink slip

Oh Dell dude, where art thou? Have you noticed that the last few Dell
commercials have been decidedly dude-free? So where is Steven, the
dimpled ditz who's been pitching PCs all over TV for the last couple
of years? A Dell official said the company is looking at other ad
campaigns and that the current ads starring a group of unctuous
interns are getting good feedback. He refused to say if dude is
getting a Dell pink slip. Poor Steven, he was really going places.
"Saturday Night Live" had just started to make fun of him for Pete's
sake!
