GERSTNER SAYS INTERNET SAVED IBM | News: IDG While on a promotional tour for his new book former IBM CEO Louis V. Gerstner, who is widely credited for turning the company around, said that the Internet literally saved IBM by giving it a new market to conquer. Gerstner also said that after taking the helm, he decided to "build the company from the market back" and heeded customers' requests to offer more affordable mainframes. "It was an extraordinary piece of mythology created in the '80s that PCs would take over for mainframes," he said. DILIGENT IMPROVES MAINFRAME BACKUP | News: Network World Diligent is taking a run at virtual tape technology -- long characterized by products from IBM and StorageTek -- that backs up mainframe data faster and more economically to large tape libraries rather than individual tape drives. IBM PARTNERS LAUNCH ON-DEMAND SERVICES | News: CNET Earlier this month, IBM announced a program to help its business partners push its on demand technology and a number of them have already signed up. BEA SNAGS GOVERNMENT BUSINESS | News: CRN BEA Systems has boosted its presence in government IT projects, doing more government business in the past three months than it has in the past two years. I responded that it is unlimited. Since units like workstations, printers, etc., all count as channel devices; the physical limitation is based only on your configuration and power. Was I correct? Some new species-specific software is helping the threatened animals find their perfect mates. Breeding pandas in captivity is a tricky business, so experts designed the software to help pair pandas from zoos across the globe using their health and bloodlines as matchmaking criteria. But it's certainly more fun to think of what a panda personal would look like: Single black and white male in search of endangered female for short-term relationship. Must want cubs, enjoy long strolls in an enclosure and love bamboo. No smokers. Are you the one?
