How HIPAA are you?

I just interviewed a mainframe systems administrator about the privacy provisions of HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996). Complying seemed relatively easy for his shop, but that contradicted what I've read and what I've heard from other administrators.

The privacy part of this legislation requires businesses to protect electronically-stored medical records and other personal health information created or maintained by health care-related companies ranging from doctors' offices to insurance companies. It is forcing many mainframe users to scramble to secure their data. In fact, according to one source, compliance will cost the industry an estimated $3.8 billion, with security and privacy rules costing companies the most money because they will be so broad and require constant updates.

We haven't covered this topic much on Search390.com, but as the deadline to comply approaches (April 2003), you'll probably be reading more on our site about it and how it will affect you. In the meantime, check out the content we do have and take our poll.

For starters, we want to know: are you ready? Are you in compliance or will you be soon? Let us know how this regulation is going to affect your business and what you're doing to comply. Are you unsure about whether you even need to be in compliance? Also, let us know if there are specific areas of HIPAA that you would like to see more written about. If you're already in compliance, what advice would you have for administrators who are about to embark on that journey? What one question do you have for the administrator who has already met the requirements? Contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED].

This Week: In the forums
>> Search390.com member Bill Copeland sent me a rather interesting and amusing comment concerning IBM's Armada server:
"My goodness. Someone at IBM marketing needs to think this one through. With all due respect to IBM, there may be some who are unimpressed by anything named after one of the great failures of history... Perhaps they could reconsider and call it "Edsel", or, something or someone more recent..."

Tip of the Week:
Try WAS Express
By Stephen Swoyer
Concomitant with its announcement of WebSphere Application Sever (WAS) 5.0, IBM Corp. unveiled a new stripped down version of WAS - WAS Express 5.0 - targeted for small and medium-sized businesses (SMB). Although it's simply not suitable for many enterprise implementations - it doesn't support Enterprise Java Beans (EJB), for example - depending on your requirements, WAS Express 5.0 could be the right fit for your environment.
