DEVELOPER TIP | SNA'ers, fulfill your CPI-C duty!

Some years ago I was assisting in the development of a new product.
One of the design criteria, from marketing, was that it would support
SNA (System Network Architecture) access between platforms and not
just IP (Internet Protocol). We had gravitated toward CPI-C (Common
Programming Interface For Communications) and its close kin APPC/MVS
(Advanced Program-to-Program Communication/MVS). What came back from
initial beta testers and other bleeding edgers was that APPC was
nowhere near commonplace in the big iron shops.

CONSOLE VS. GUI-BASED MAINFRAME APPLICATIONS | DB2 and Database

Are the majority of mainframe applications sold these days
console-based or GUI-based? In your opinion, which of the two
alternatives is more effective, both in terms of being user-friendly
and being functional? Going forward, is there going to be a trend
towards PC-based GUI applications for mainframes?

RPC WORM FINALLY STRIKES | SearchSecurity.com

A worm has emerged that takes advantage of the Windows RPC
vulnerability. It's too early to say whether LovSan-A will be as
pervasive as the last major network worm, SQL Slammer.

FEATURED WHITE PAPER | Voice and data over 3746 frame-relay lines

This document contains configuration requirements and recommendations
for 3746 users wanting to carry voice (Voice over IP -- VoIP) and
data (SNA, APPN, HPR) traffic over frame-relay connections between
3746s. The 3746 support for VoIP traffic is included in the "3746
Extended Functions 5" (feature number 5812).

THE MISSING LINK | Ask Jeeves gives butler a break

Contrary to the cliche, the butler did not do it. At least he didn't
do it for Ask Jeeves. The search engine firm, not wishing to ride the
coattails of Google (a.k.a. the sultans of search), is revamping its
image and ditching its well-known butler logo. Ask Jeeves wants to be
known for finding the right answers, not just asking the right
questions. So a new ad campaign has begun, and Jeeves has been asked
to take a break. He'll still be there on the Ask.com arrival page,
but for now, he's pretty much a part-timer. (InternetNews)
