LEAD STORY
"COMMON: Storage vendors jockey for position"
It's not taking center stage yet, but storage is clearly a hot button
among users attending the Spring COMMON conference being held this
week in New Orleans. The demand for storage is great among the
midrange community, say vendors, and the ones exhibiting here are
thrilled to be among the first to address the growing needs of the
AS/400 user.

1. "COMMON keynote: Time to spread the good word"
IBM is talking up a storm about how it's going to promote the hot new
features of the iSeries and V5R1. And, while they're historically a
skeptical group, users attending Spring COMMON this week in New
Orleans appear to be more confident that IBM will finally be putting
its money where its mouth is.

2. "IBM answers Microsoft's .Net"
IBM isn't going to let Microsoft take over the market for developing
Web services, Zona Research analyst Martin Marshall told
searchMiddleware. This week, Big Blue announced a series of product
enhancements across its DB2, Lotus, Tivoli and WebSphere product
lines geared towards Web services. This is a direct answer to
Microsoft's .Net initiative, Marshall said.

3. "IBM makes e-commerce software push"
IBM is adding enhancements to new versions of WebSphere and the DB2
database that would allow businesses to conduct automated e-commerce
without people clicking on browsers. For example, when a new employee
is hired, one command can start software to buy a desk, phone and
computer. If red phones are out of stock, the software could search a
directory for companies that have red phones and learn how to connect
automatically to place an order.

"Berners-Lee finally gets credit due to him"
The United Kingdom's Royal Society, the organization that awards the
UK's highest scientific honor, has a lot in common with the folks who
hand out Grammys in the U.S. -- they're both constantly accused of
being out of touch. Mainstream technology has never earned a
significant notice from the society, but the election of a new
president has brought aboard a new philosophy. The society has found
it in its good graces to bestow its highest honor, a Fellowship of
the Royal Society, to someone outside the circle of high science. Tim
Berners-Lee, the man responsible for the World Wide Web's address
system, was recently tossed a fellowship allowing him to rub elbows
with the 360-year-old institution's elite.
