LEAD STORY
"Lotus to offer Web services kit to developers"
IBM really played up the release of its WebSphere Application Server
and enhancements to its DB2 database. But one big question remained
unanswered: What role would Lotus' groupware and messaging software
have in this deal? Apparently, the details won't be spelled out until
the Lotus Developers Conference, being held later this month.

[1] "J.D. Edwards eyes new software, new opportunities"
At its annual Focus User Group Conference and Expo next week, J.D.
Edwards will unveil a new product -- supply-chain event management
software -- that will offer real-time connectivity. Company officials
say the real-time connectivity technology, which the company also
features in its ERP applications, will redefine the supply chain and

[3] "Tech giants promote use of WBEM standards"
A number of open source projects and a group of nine companies,
including Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard and IBM have formed an
alliance to promote the use of a set of open system management

[4] "Java: Our cup runneth over"
San Francisco's Golden Gate has become more like a floodgate, with
Java developers by the thousands spilling into town for JavaOne. Many
of these folks are just trying to keep up with a technology that
changes faster than Starbuck's can open a new store. So many
products, so much change, so little time -- Java's jolt can be
overwhelming.

[5] "Ellison blasts WebLogic in JavaOne keynote"
BEA Systems Chairman and CEO Bill Coleman and Oracle Chairman and CEO
Larry Ellison duked it out, sort of, during back-to-back JavaOne
keynotes Thursday. While Coleman chose to use his keynote time to
highlight BEA's achievements and celebrate the Java community,
Ellison used his presentation solely to tell the crowd over and over
that Oracle9i Application Server (9iAS) is better than BEA WebLogic.

[6] "Analysts: IT spending to soften before it gets better"
According to a recent study by research firm IDC, IT spending in the
U.S. will stay soft, but only for the short term. The report
concluded that spending would pick up, but it wouldn't be as strong
as it has been in the recent past.

"Hot on the scent of information"

When it comes to looking for information on the Web, the term
"hunting" may be more accurate than "surfing." According to research
being conducted by the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, humans seek
info on the Net with the same food-gathering techniques employed by
animals -- by following the scent. But we're not talking "smell"
here. The research scientists use the term "information scent" when
describing cues - like images and hyperlinks -- that people use to
decide which paths to follow in their Internet searches.
