LEAD STORY
"Web services vendors paving the integration path"
The demand for Web-based legacy applications has given way
to a slew of vendors who say they can make the integration
easier, but experts say while many of them have strengths
in this area, they also have weaknesses.

[1] "IBM meets the Street; warns of slow PC, hard disk
drive, chip sales"
While IBM may have met Wall Street's estimate for its
second-quarter earnings, it also showed it is feeling the
pressures of a turbulent business climate. Big Blue posted
a profit of $2 billion, or $1.15 per share -- a dip from
the $21.65 billion second quarter in 2000, the company
said. However, the company said in a statement that its
sales actually grew by 5% -- depending how you looked at
the numbers.

[2] "For 14 LPPs, it's so long Software Subscription,
hello Software Maintenance"
Beginning next year, Software Subscription will no longer
cover several software products, but users will still get a
year's worth of technical support and upgrade maintenance
included in the original purchase price. And if Rochester
likes the way this new pricing and maintenance model works,
it might apply it to the rest of the iSeries' software
products.

According to this review, SnapShot/400 delivers a

THE MISSING LINK
A look at an off-the-wall story off the Web
--------------------------------------------

"The driving nightmare -- the car that talks back"
It's hard enough battling the kids for control of the car
radio, but now, thanks to IBM, you have to contend with the
car itself. Big Blue has developed an "Artificial
Passenger" to keep travel weary drivers
awake at the wheel. The system changes radio stations to
see if the driver notices, cracks jokes, and includes a
conversation planner program that asks questions and
measures response times to determine if you're dozing in
the driver's seat. If the computer receives a sluggish
response it squirts a chilling shot of ice water in your
face. Suggestions for an optional Three Stooges package
that sprays seltzer instead of water and then calls you a
"knucklehead," have been dismissed.
