Are there chinks in the iSeries' armor?
There's a security flaw in the iSeries' Java Virtual Machine. A few security holes were found in the TCP/IP networking software for V4R5 and V5R1. There are still bugs and glitches that still haven't been remedied in V5R1.
Sure, IBM has released PTFs and patches, but problems continue to arise. As an iSeries user, have you noticed an increase in security vulnerabilities in recent months? How about in the past few years? Would you say that IBM is quick to respond to problems or is it taking a cavalier approach to the release of PTFs?
IBM has released PTFs to fix the TCP/IP vulnerabilities but offered few details about the nature of the problem, citing security concerns. Rochester did go so far as to recommend turning off the TCP/IP networking software on the boxes if the PTFs cannot be installed immediately.
Is IBM being forthright enough? Do you want to know more about security vulnerabilities? Or are you afraid releasing such information may help attackers?
In a recent news story, IBM reportedly said the Java Virtual Machine exploit is a tough nut to crack. To be successful, attackers would need to know the structure of objects very well. The threat to iSeries Java users is minimal, IBM said.
Is this an adequate response from Big Blue? Can IBM do more to make its products more secure? Is the iSeries still one of the most secure platforms or is IBM letting things slip. Can it all be blamed on open systems and the Web? Contact me with your thoughts and take our poll.

User authentication
One member writes, "Our company has 7,000 users that all have NT profiles. Only about 500 of these users have an AS/400 profile. So, we have created a homegrown solution for User Authentication. Does anyone know how to force an NT Challenge and Response and then retrieve the results in our Net.Data Apps?" Have any suggestions? Click over and post them.

| Tip of the Week: |
Trap that disconnection error
Often you may notice that interactive programs don't trap for disconnection errors. When any type of maintenance is being done on a file, it's crucial to perform proper clean up. The issue can arise from a user simply terminating his telnet session. If SQL commitment control isn't being used, it can be time-consuming to verify files and potentially have to clean them up. There is an easy solution, however: Add a subroutine to clean up the file. |
