RE:[cayugabirds-l] Song sparrow back!

2010-03-25 Thread Meena Haribal
I checked the date when he (SOSP) had returned in 2008 and the date was March
17. So he is late by a week this year! Wonder what delayed his arrival. I
think last year (2009) it was something like April 2 but will check it out.

[cayugabirds-l] Pectoral Sandpipers at Armitage Rd

2010-03-25 Thread bob mcguire
In addition to 14 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS at the far edge of the flooded
field to the north of Armitage Road, here are the highlights of my
trip up the lake this morning:

Numerous TREE SWALLOWS at Tschache pool, East Road, and Marten's Tract.

A EURASIAN WIGEON in rather subdued plumage in close to the tower at
Tschache.

Two BLUE-WINGED TEAL in the pool at the MNWR Visitor's Center.

A single TURKEY VULTURE in the air above Marten's Tract.

Pheasant, NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD, and singing EASTERN MEADOWLARK along
West Covert Road in the Finger Lakes National Forest.

I ran into Frank Morlock (DEC) on Van Dyne Spoor Road. He was there to
survey the waterfowl and mentioned that he has been at work entering
LaRue's twice-weekly list into eBird. I was pleased to hear this
because, having seen the list on occasion after it was turned in to
the Visitor's Center, I saw how valuable it could be both in
monitoring the population and in providing timely information to
birders on unusual sightings (I recall hearing about his mention of
phalaropes at Mays Pool last year).

I also talked with Jim Eckler (DEC office on Morgan Rd) who noted
that, in spite of a tight budget situation, they were moving ahead
with plans for enhanced shore- and marsh bird habitat in the Northern
Montezuma Complex. Muckrace Flats is in and will be managed closely,
the large marsh area across from the MAC is being planted (planted,
not planned!), there is a new marsh area being constructed between
Morgan and Carncross Rds, and plans are underway for another marsh
area in front of headquarters (end of Morgan Rd). Jim mentioned how
useful Matt Medler's First Arrivals list is in planning for drawdowns/
fill-ups of the areas they manage. Thanks Matt!

[cayugabirds-l] pied-bill grebe

2010-03-25 Thread Carol Keeler
I saw my FOS pied billed grebes at Montezuma across from Benning Marsh
at just before 10:00 am today. The bald eagles at Mud Lock are still
not on the nest. I understand that this is a new female since she
doesn't have any tags. They are still bringing back nesting materials
and mating, but no eggs yet. Does this mean there might not be any
eaglets at this nest this year? Is it too late for nesting?

[cayugabirds-l] Am Kestrels back on Mt Pleasant - Wednesday

2010-03-25 Thread Marie P Read
Ooops, too busy to post this yesterday, but a/the American Kestrel pair has
arrived on Mt Pleasant as of Wednesday afternoon. While I was on my afternoon
walk, I was thinking about how it must be time for them to return by now, when
a falcon-winged bird flew across the road in front of me. My heart leaped, but
no - silly me - it was a Killdeer! But on the way home, I saw an actual male
kestrel take flight, carrying some prey, and wing its way over the fields
toward the ex-sheep-barn, at which point it began calling. And there perched on
a telephone pole, was the female. Maybe the prey was an early courtship
offering?
