Two points to make.
Winch drum surface does wear out as in gets smooth and looses it's grip on the 
line causing the line to slip.
Second, winch size for racing a 34. I campaigned a 34 for 12 yrs. Put Lewmar 
44s on when I 1st got the boat. Also make sure you have good handles and big 
enough diameter sheets.

Over the winter, I rebuilt the Barient 2-sp 28s that were original on my ‘85 
37. Only had to replace the springs. Pawls appeared to have been replaced a few 
years ago but showed minimal wear; the gears and bearings were well greased by 
previous owners and in good shape. I’d say maintenance matters if the winch is 
serving your needs. Definitely worth a rebuild, considering the replacement 
cost.

Clean them up, replace any bad springs/pawls, light oil on the pawls, grease 
(from kit) on spindles/teeth (?), reassemble and you will be likely as good as

lose any parts AND take one winch apart at a time so the other is there for a 
guide, and you should be fine. Its one of those dirty jobs but simple enough to 
do. Once you have done one, the next is much faster plus you don't need any 
special tools.

I went to boat this afternoon.  Ashamed to say I did not even know what size 
the existing winches are.  They are Lewmar/England 42ST, likely original to 
boat, therefore 42 years old.  From what I am hearing from everyone, a Lewmar 
42ST should be adequate for a C&C34.  But man, even in 12 knts wind it takes 
the full strength of two crew to get the last 2 feet in.  I was sensing that 
the winch handle was about to break.

After reading more this afternoon, I am sure the winches are way past due for 
servicing.  Lewmar recommends 2 to 3 times a season!  This may be part, if not 
all, of the problem.  I suspect the winches were disassembled and greased about 
10 to 12 years ago. Before that, who knows.

Is a set of 42 year old winches worth disassembling, cleaning, greasing, and 
reassembling?  Will this result in a significant improvement?  What parts of 
the winch typically need to be replaced and can those Lewmar parts be obtained 
for such an old winch?

Persistence came to us with Electric Lewmar 43ST winches for the primaries.  
There were no secondaries.  For cruising ease the primaries had been located 
where secondaries normally would be and the mounting locations for the original 
primaries were faired and painted over.  The second set of manual Lewmar 43ST 
winches were mounted on the cabin top for use as halyard winches.  THIS WAS WAY 
OVERKILL!



ST43 as halyard winches way larger than necessary.  Jib trimmers facing 
backward to trim genoa was awkward to say the least.  So we moved the cabin top 
Lewmar 43ST back to the original primary location and replaced cabin top 
halyard winches with Lewmar 30ST (Ocean series I believe)



This still left us with electric Lewmar 43 ST.  First of all an electric winch 
can be nasty.  An inexperienced trimmer can damage the headsail using one.  We 
always had the switches turned off and used as a manual winch.  Secondly these 
were AWFUL to maintain.  To service the winches the motor has to be dropped 
from beneath before the drums can come off to clean and lubricate the gears, 
pawls, etc …  Due to this and due to the lack of accessibility from beneath to 
do this these winches were rarely serviced and never properly.  When running 
the spinnaker on these secondaries they were stiff and made spin handling more 
problematic than it should be (due to the lack of east servicing).



In the end we traded these to someone with a pilothouse 44 foot boat for a set 
of new Lewmar 40 ST that are far superior for our purposes.  On top of the ease 
of servicing and better sizing for the boat removing the motors took a

for me years ago when refitting a pearson 30. Then many blocks and a boom vang 
for my 34 C&C. I would always chat with him at the boat shows. Very interesting 
guy. Built tank parts for Desert Storm operations.

Just an aside on the true coal tar epoxy, like what rustolem co sells. My 82' 
C&C 34 had a cast iron centerboard. wire wheeled the board, painted 2 coats of 
coal tar and after 12 yrs of owning the boat there was no sign of rust bleeding 
thru. Awesome stuff for protecting steel in salt water !

Is it possible you are trying to remove VC Tar or similar?



Coal tar epoxy is the corrosion protection system we typically spec for steel 
sheets in a marine environment. Bluewater makes a bottom barrier coat for 
boats, but I suspect it's for commercial use on steel hull barges etc.



If you're dealing with VC Tar as Joe and others have suggested, then misery 
loves company. I am the final stretch of the same project.



For me the tar was softer, it smelled terrible and was still somewhat tacky in 
warm temps. After much trial and error I settled on two techniques that worked 
for me.

  1.  Chemical stripping - I used Citristrip and a glass cleaner 

 (4-inch wide razor blade) in lieu of a putty knife. With the razor blade (lots 
of replacement blades), and a little practice, i was able to peel off two or 
three layers of paint at a time and leave a smooth fair surface. On the tar, i 
was able to get between the tar and gel coat without gouging the hull. My boat 
was raced by the original owner and had a decent bottom, but had suffered from 
paint build up. While this sounds tedious, it minimized the fairing and 
longboarding. The rub is the stripper needs the temps to be close to 60-F 
(15-C) to work and needs to sit for at least an hour or two. If you're in 
direct sunlight or windy, you'll want to cover the stripper with plastic. You 
want to avoid letting it dry out. (Another boat in the yard didn't use plastic, 
but just mist the gel with a water bottle to keep it from drying out.) With the 
citristrip, i was able to apply it and leave it overnight covered with plastic 
and then come back to scrape it the next day. It seemed to work up to about 
3-layers of paint.
  2.  Mechanical Removal - Unfortunately, I counted 12 separate colors of 
bottom paint before getting to the tar, i'm located in the NE and with a hard 
launch date, i had to use a mix of chemical and mechanical removal. The only 
system that worked for me without destroying the hull shape was a 6-inch random 
orbital sander using 80-grit Mirka Abranet pads. The Mirka are a mesh pad and 
do not clog with the tar as long as your dust collection system is decent. I 
used a home depot dust stopper 

  separator before the shop vac. It is stupid expensive for what it is... but 
it really works and saves your shop vac filters. I could get 10 to 15 minutes 
out of the Mirka pads. I've gone through close to 30-pads in the project.



I tried using traditional 36-grit pads but they were dulled after about 
5-minutes. Also tried the Bahco carbide scrapers. Those worked well for level 
surfaces (e.g the rudder that you drop and put on saw horses) but it was tough 
sledding to work on your back under the hull. If you do go that route, bevel 
the edges of the blades and you won't gouge the hull.



If you're still here, a few other lessons I learned the hard way.



Managing heat on the pads was important. The Mirka pads do not insulate the 
hooks from heat. So you'll absolutely need to use pad protectors. If you don't, 
you'll melt the hooks on your sander and your disks will be flying off the 
sander by lunch on the first day. I lost a few days waiting for new parts when 
this happened to me... I also found lighter pressure on the sander worked 
better. Letting the pad spin faster allowed it to chew more of the material 
away. Easier on the shoulders too.



Switching back to the stripper, I applied with a chip brush. Someone in the 
yard pointed out that i should only be brushing in one direction. Most have a 
wax in them that helps prevent drying out. Applying in one direction certainly

After wearing prescription glasses since age 3, I'm getting lens implants and 
will be able to toss Rx glasses.  I can now buy off the shelf sunglasses.  Wow!

What are your favorites for sailing?  For clarification, lens specifics and 
perceived efficiency as well as brand and model information will be helpful to 
me and perhaps to others but my specific purchase will most likely be a pair 
with nose pads as the bridge of my nose is very narrow.  The wide bridge 
plastic frames just don't work for me.

I second Mikes take.  My 34 has been a great relatively inexpensive cruising 
boat so far and I love having a boat that moves in light wind. We sail short 
handed too and don’t race so I tend to reef early but she will handle a blow 
just fine and with the full rig you can sail to windward pretty well (actually 
on all points) under headsail only when it is blowing.
It does have plenty of old boat issues and needs work and TLC but if you have 
fun with that it isn’t too bad.

Yes soft spots in the deck happen (Sailed with them for two years and just 
repaired this spring) and some leaks around the bulkhead connections but 
overall my impression is that it is a good quality production boat with the 
right compromise between interior and cockpit space and relatively underpriced 
compared to similar size boats.  Like Mike, my wife got on the 34 and despite 
the dirt and mildew cause it had been sitting for a few years she said this is 
the one.  We got her cleaned up and are improving things each year.  One 
drawback for cruising is no bow roller for the anchor.

Creeping Crack cure (thanks Dennis) they no longer are a problem.

We have the original A4 gas engine which was redone by Moyer Marine in 2009, I 
find the boat sails so well I do not use it too much and we do a fair amount of 
distance in our boat. To be honest I prefer the gas engine as I do not care for 
the diesel smell or exhaust. When shopping boats my wife turned her nose up at 
everything 35's, Bristols, Cats, etc...….we saw our 34' on a rainy cold day in 
October, it was on the end of a dock blowing 25mph and we had to jump just to 
get on her.we were on her 5 minutes and my wife said "buy her".

I think the hardest part of my ownership of my 34' is telling my wife its time 
to go home.

Chiming in late on this and probably a mute point at this time.
But update in NJ
I am the commodore of Manasquan River YC in Brielle and we have shut down all 
operations.
Events, our bar, sailing, club rentals. Realistically might be May or later.
Metedeconk River YC in Brick NJ  all operations shut down till further notice.
Just spoke with the General Manager at Bay Head YC and they are hoping to open 
mid May.
their restaurant is starting a take out program.
Lets all hope for a quick recovery when this runs its course.

I had very good luck with a Nordac main from North on my 34. After 8 years 
still had lots of life left in
it and held shape. Perhaps the cloth is different now?
Speaking of sails I still have 2 really nice jibs from my 1982 C&C 34. Went 
on a harken roller. made for the boat

155% mylar/kevlar with taffata on one side. in very good shape.

Fawcetts is my go-to place for everything except line.  If you need an odd 
fastener, they will have it!  (Recently needed a 12 inch 3/8 stainless machine 
screw and it was in stock!)  Hopefully they will expand their offerings.  
Bacon's has a good selection of NER and Marlow, and focuses on the less 
expensive lines.

There are a number of lines with cheaper dyneema cores that have less stretch 
than poly, such as Marlow D2 Club.  Much cheaper than D2 Racer and certainly 
more than adequate for sheets.  MLX3 is a dyneema blended core that is nice too.

cordage rather than the “best” option, all of which includes getting the right

the “sale price” of 20% off doesn’t amount to much if the regular price is 
already 20-25% higher than the local sailboat rigger would sell it to you.
I’ll miss making my annual pilgrimage to APS during the Annapolis Boat Show as 
I always enjoyed checking out the wide selection of cordage and hardware on 
hand at the store.  I do think its cool that Fawcetts is stepping up to service 
the performance sailors in Nap Town.  They’ve always been a high quality outlet 
for marine goods, but never much on servicing the racers in the past.

So I'm in the market for new jib sheets and my goto Annapolis Performance 
Sailing at APDLTD.COM keeps throwing 404 errors.  I call 
them up a describe the problem hoping that they can simply make the order over 
the phone.  The associate tells me that they no longer carry cordage of any 
type!  She goes on to tell me that they also no longer sell ANY hardware and no 
longer perform rigging services!  I ask, what do you carry? and she says, 
apparel/accessories only.  I was completely dumbfounded since they had 
seemingly had such a large presence in the sailing community, both locally and 
on the internet.  I expressed my disappointment and wished them luck with the 
new business model.

Upon hanging up, I called Fawcett's which has a very limited internet presence 
but phenomenal staff and selection.  Joe was extremely helpful, he ordered a 
spool of cordage just for me, and had the 100' I needed cut, whipped and 
shipped at a better price than that of West Marine Pro (which gave ~20% 
discount).  The price comparison was close and I will have to wait 2 weeks for 
them to get the spool but I'm not in a big rush and keeping the local business 
is valuable to me.

If you’re going to do Mystic, which I also recommend, forget Brewers and stay 
in the Mystic Seaport. It’s a short walk into town, your boat is on display in 
the museum, and you have the whole place to yourself at night. Our first C&C 
rendezvous was there and it was a blast.

The market for auxiliary sail is SO soft. For 25k you can get a really great 
turn key boat. Most boats are selling for 1/2 of asking price, as per a friend 
who owns a yacht brokerage company out of Central NJ.

Hi Shawn,

Realistically,  I think you should walk away  from that boat.  There are just 
too many owner modifications that have not been done by someone who knows what 
they are doing in a marine environment.  Consider finding the right boat, even 
at a distance in the right condition at the right price, even if you have to 
have it trucked to you.  You'll end up spending the equivalent cost to move the 
boat just getting this one in proper shape, and  you'll avoid a lot of 
heartburn.

When we bought our boat, we knew that the fresh water, propane, and charging 
system all had issues, the sail covers desperately needed to be replaced, and 
while kept relatively clean it had basically sat at the dock for years.  
However the boat was basically sound, having had a lot of professional upgrades 
added 8 years earlier.  Two years later, we have a great boat, but our project 
list has now exceeded 200 individual small projects, we're down to 22 short 
term and 15 long term (mostly to be done at haulout).  Yet, last weekend I 
found another where a wire leading out from the battery charger had corroded 
due to poor installation.  That, in turn is driving me to add a 3rd battery to 
the house bank while I'm at it...  And, though I enjoy working on my boat, I'm 
getting a little tired seeing a list with some of the same items still staring 
at me 24 months in.

There's no way I would intentionally buy a boat that I think might need to be 
fully rewired.  Good wire and connectors add up more quickly than you think, 
and that's one of those jobs that will require a LOT gymnastics inside of tight 
places!

Sorry to be the downer here, but you're asking for opinions...

Much to my dismay I have no takers on my 1982 34 .
It is amazing what people expect for $6000 that do come out, and the fact that 
there are no takers looking for a sailable boat that needs a little TLC.
If I don't get a taker soon I will be parting out and disposing of the hull. 
Have to believe I will get more than 5k for parts.
Stay tuned. All harken sail handling equipment, st winches, etc.
Boat add can be seen on CL Jersey Shore area.

I am looking to send my C&C off to a new home.

She has served me well for 10 yrs.

Racing and cruising at the new jersey shore.

Good news very well equipped , set up spin, lewmar self tailers,

harken traveler, hydraulic back stay, newer harken furler.

Bags of sails, new north 135, 2 season old 155.

Nice Cruising 145 dacron with sunbrella. Cushions in storage 10 yrs perfect 
shape,

dodger and bimini

stored for 10 yrs, cockpit cushions in storage, teak cockpit floors unused.

Bad news small hole 2"x5" in the hull port side 2' from stern 6" down from toe 
rail.

Selling as is. Needs some TLC. Boat in water, paid bubbler storage for winter.

Thinking $9000 with all sails, $7000 without the 135 and 155.

The recent discussion about attaching sheets ( and getting them hung up on the 
baby stay) reminded me about the times my sheets have gotten snagged by the 
cleats on the cabin top near the mast. So I thought I would give myself a set 
of cleat covers for Christmas.

But the cleats on Imzadi (original 8" cleats) look suspiciously like the ones 
shown that are not compatible with the covers.

You are welcome to MRYC if you want. Actually , as you know, only about 3 hrs 
from Toms River to MRYC depending on tide in the canal.

Probably makes sense to run one day up to Atlantic Highlands , then next day up 
to SBYC. Shark River is only 5 miles north of Manasquan.

Concern with Shark. If its a snotty day in the ocean you have to wait outside 
the inlet till the bridge opens. Secondly not sure where you would stay

up there? not really spots to anchor I don't think.

Thanks for the responses and Jim thanks very much for the offer for the 
overnight.  I really might just take you up on that if we do spend the night on 
the Manasquan.

I was asking about Shark River Inlet because I'll just be coming from Toms 
River on my way to NYC.  So, I was hoping to make it further North than 
Manasquan Saturday, and then Sunday do the ocean sail up to the Sheepshead Bay 
Yacht club in Brooklyn where I'll be keeping her for the winter.

I could do it in a straight shot from Toms River, but I've done this trip 
before (in the opposite direction) and splitting it over two days makes it much 
more fun - and allows for more sailing.  When I sailed from Brooklyn to Toms 
River in the spring we overnighted on the Manasquan.

However, it sounds like Shark River inlet is pretty hairy...  What exactly 
makes it hairy?  Breaking waves?  Current?

Chuck,

Small world. My son is a Brielle Police officer and last summer he was the 
marine officer. Not much has changed, railroad bridge still a place of drama, 
and the usual abuse of the no wake zones. One big change however that has taken 
place is the Manasquan Inlet is no longer a no wake zone.

btw I believe the we still  have the whaler you rode around in in 1975! It was 
given to Brielle fire company as a rescue boat.(its tired!)

Many years back (1975-76), I was the Brielle Police marine officer on Manasquan 
River and managed traffic between the Railroad drawbridge and the Rt 35 bridge 
span.  We had numerous incidents of boats being pinned sideways on the railroad 
bridge by the current when they wouldn’t allow sufficient room to turn around 
as the bridge was closing.  As mentioned, the bridge stays open for the most 
part, but there’s no set time that the bridge closes to marine traffic since it 
is subject to the rail schedule as opposed to a specific “minutes before or 
after the hour”.  It was also common for boats to run aground just east of the 
rail bridge if they tried to cut the channel markers on the wrong side..

All told, it was still a fun summer job during college years..

I agree with Andy.  I never entered Shark River because I didn't believe it had 
the vertical clearance.  Used Manasquan many times paying heed to go in on 
slack plus or minus and hour.  Never had a problem:  RR bridge is normally open 
and road bridge, while excruciatingly slow, always answered the call.

I will chime in on the mpower it is really amazing. Great to jump vehicles, but 
also very handy when Iforget to plug the boat back in after beer can racing 
tuesday nights, and the refrig kills the battery. Fires my 3gmf right up as 
well. Had it for 2 yrs now. Typically I see these units in the $120 range.As 
with anything I would be a skeptical of units 1/2 the price. The one on amazon 
might be "harbor freight ish"looks like the real thing but doesn't perform that

cheaper than the bladder tank replacement would of been.Just figured I would

I was told 3 way valves are a source of cloggs.  Have an extra tank fitting and 
a marcerator pump for overboard discharge.  It's been 12 troublefree years 
since I installed my tank.   I didn't have a tank before that.

Might as well chime in .My 1982 34' c/b with a 3GMF20 ,martec folding cruises 
the same as Legacy III about 5.5 to 6 max around 3100rpm.When I first got the 
boat and brought it up to NJ from Annapolis she had a 2 blade sailor and

After seeing Legacy's speed with a 3GM, I feel less bad about our speed.I've 
got a 1978 34 with a 2QM20 and get right around 5.5  with a Mar-Tec folding 
prop, too.I though she was under-powered, but I guess not.  I try not to run 
wide-open, so I can only guess we'd get to 6kts.Good news she sips diesel fuel.
