At first glance it looks like the gzip bug. Thanks to everybody for
caring enough to report this bug and thanks to the person that submitted
a patch for that (Sorry, can't remember the name from the top of my head).

The patch seems to fix the gzip problem, but currently when I compile
pose on my sid machine the emulator will just ignore all my mouse
clicks. This happend to me a long time ago, it was something to do with
optimizations. I need some time to sit down and review all the patches
to locate this new problem. I hope I can get some free time over the
weekend.

If anybody wants to help out I'm uploading the current test package to
gluck[1].

the base installation) is slated for removal and both xserver-xfree86
and gawk are slated for installation at the same time, mawk is removed
first, and (since the order of installation is not deterministic) if
xserver-xfree86 is upacked and preconfigured before gawk, it fails.
xserver-xfree86 (and any other packages that rely on awk) should

Even without pam_umask, the login.defs setting would only affect
console logins, unless bash was used, which overrides them. zsh, for
instance, does not specify a umask, so it gets 022 by default, and
login.defs' value on the console. With the existence of all these
corner cases, I would say: remove, and add a comment to refer people
to /etc/profile (or equivalent) and libpam-umask.

This comes from a discussion in debian-devel. In that discussion, the

I was. 'upgrade' holds back the package.



version of base-config on a sarge system, or else specifying on the
commandline that you want both base-config and exim4-daemon-heavy to be
installed.


The dist-upgrade should see I already have exim4-daemon-heavy installed 
and be happy with that.


"apt-get install base-config exim4-daemon-heavy" does indeed do what I 
want, but it's nuts that the default behaviour is to break a working system.

Bug#314562: Broken screen during xserver-xfree86 installation process

 At the end of the net installation process(DesktopEnvironment is selected 
from the menu) and during xserver-xfree86 setup I get an error saying:

.this message goes on and I can see exim setup with screen broken. 
After pressing enter key, error message clears up the and exim setup screen 
pops up. But one or two second later the error message becomes visible 
again. Anyways, after configuring exim(though the screen is broken) the 
screen comes to normal and after the installation I cannot use HP scanjet 
5300c usb scanner on my usb port.


 I suggest that the installation cd be corrected.

That's a lot of extensions. I really think you should try with a clean
profile with no extensions installed and see if that helps.

Hmm, seems I was wrong about *.ps.gz being handled by the postscript
entry.  No, all *.gz files are by default just handled by the gzip
entry.

So could I add compressed postscript to this wishlist?
i.e.

I don't care.  I just think people should know what they're in for if
they install this software.  I gave up trying to get the Zope
developers to think about security; they'd rather rewrite everything
from the ground up every few years and replace one set of bugs with
another, which is fine it is their perogative to do that, but as a
result I haven't followed Zope development for about a year, so
backporting all the fixes between 2.5 and now, even if I had the time,
isn't somthing I really want to help with.

I don't expect to see these bugs fixed, but until woody is burried it
wouldn't hurt to just leave this bug open.

Bug#314560: very strange dependencies in netbase

This package depends, among others, on: netkit-inetd, tcpd, iputils-ping | 
ping

inetd seems not to be referenced in any of netbase files 
(except /usr/sbin/update-inetd, but it can be moved to netkit-inetd 
package I think, and dependency on netkit-inetd removed, or maybe put to 
Recommends: ...)

The same for tcpd - it doesn't seem to be used by netbase in any way, so I 
wonder why it is here.

So there are two dependencies (tcpd, netkin-inetd) that are unnecessary. 
It seems that even if someone want to install some inetd replacement (like 
xinetd), the dependency on netkin-inetd still remain and it cannot be 
removed.

Also I doubt the ping is really needed (thought it is almost essential to 
have, you can have working network even without it) - maybe put that in 
Recommends: too ...

I found this bug when trying to remove tcpd and inetd (since nothing on my 
system use these two daemons) but I was unable due to this dependency

Hi, I'm afraid you are going to have to clarify a few things,
and/or do some debugging of your own here.  I've just been
forwarded a separate report where you claim(ed) this is the
solution?  I gather you no longer believe that??

This could be a whole lot of things, and possibly specific
to your graphics card.  It is impossible for me to say on
the information given.

I will take one punt though, now that I have some inkling this
may be with kernel 2.6, and suggest you look at the initialisation
order of related things after a cold boot.

If simply restarting stm makes things better, it is possible
that we are initialising something too early (or late) now,
before udev and/or other mechanisms fully configure the all
console vt's or so.

But I'm not going to be able to do much here without a tested
patch, or a much more detailed analysis of exactly what is
going wrong on what sort of systems.

Is anyone else (not) seeing this?

base-config has no ppp dependencies, no exim dependencies or conflicts,
and its tasksel conflict is appropriate, since it will work without
tasksel, but will fail with the old version.

I don't understand why apt wanted to change anything except tasksel,
but that's what apt's problem resolver debugger is for I guess.

Frankly, I have partitioned automatically, and wasn't expecting such a

- "Load installer modules"? What are the "installer modules"?

Comments/Problems:

- Before installing, I needed to backup some data from the HD. I thought
  I'd use the first CD as rescue CD, but there was no 'rescue' boot option!
  I had to use my old Woody installation CDs (I'm glad I had them there!)

- I was happy to see that the installation was very fast and easy, if compared 
  to the previous Woody installations. It was also nice to see that the
  installer is quite smart and detects the gateway, makes good guesses about the
  DNS server, netmask, etc. And it guessed the box name right away.
  However, I had to wait until DHCP gave up so I could enter the settings 
manually
  (we don't use DHCP here!)

- I would have installed install LVM if the instructions on the install process
  weren't so confusing. It said I had to partition first, save the partition 
table
  and only later decide to use LVM, but didn't make ti clear if my partitioning 
  would become lvm physical volumes or logical volumes. A brief explanation of 
how
  exactly the installer would handle this would be quite helpful.

Bug#314557: please support compressed pdf files

Please consider letting the mc viewer handle compressed pdf files (*.pdf.gz).
Whenever pdf files appear in /usr/share/doc, they are typically compressed
further (at least debhelper compresses them in dh_installdocs).

Adding something like:

# compressed PDF
shell/.pdf.gz
Open=(zxpdf %f &)

to the extensions file will do the trick (using zxpdf instead of xpdf).
(perhaps you might prefer a regexp rather than the simple shell entry).

Other document types may or may not benefit from similar attention.
Compressed postscript fails in a similar way, but that's because "run-mailcap
application/postscript" is used by default to handle it. The user is free to
change that to the alternative of gv which you've already suggested
(commented out). gv can read *.ps.gz.

Anyway, I hope you can make the improvement for the pdf.gz files. I can't
think of any harmful side effects it might have.

Resize signals were somehow blocked after studying strace. I rebooted to
the latest version of Linux kernel to solve the problem.

I still don't quite understand how they were blocked before. Have you
altered kernel/cap-bound in /etc/sysctl.conf at some point?

That's the only thing I can think of. I couldn't be bothered to use an
earlier kernel to see if it comes back.

It's not bogus at all; it's a perfectly valid result of installing a package
from one suite while you're running another.  You almost certainly need to
be doing a dist-upgrade here first, before trying to install the etch

installed.

I'm not closing this bug just yet because experience with sarge showed us
that excessive conflicts could be a source of problems when upgrading
between stable releases, so this may warrant further investigation.

I recently noticed that xscreensaver can pull random images from a specified
directory for use as a base in several of the display modes. glslideshow, in
particular, makes it behave a lot like the OS-X screensaver that I find so
pleasing, cycling through random vacation snapshots.

However, a portion of my .jpg pictures are taken in portrait mode. Before
printing or otherwise using these images, I generally have to rotate them
90deg CW or CCW to bring them face-up. xscreensaver's various image-using
modes don't know about this, so the picture always looks a bit silly, lying
on its side.

There are EXIF tags in the .jpg files to indicate whether the 0,0 pixel is
top-left, bottom-left, or top-right (as recorded by the orientation sensor in
most cameras when the picture was taken), and I've written (perl) code in the
past to read these tags and auto-rotate any images that needed it.

It would be spiffy if the xscreensaver-getimage-file utility could look for
these tags and rotate the image before using it on the screen.

For a large directory tree, finddup takes a long time to run.
Apparently, it reads every file in the tree.  I suggest several ways
to reduce the amount of data read from the disk:

 - The initial scan of the directory tree should record only file
size, ownership, and permissions.  If there is only one file of a
given length, then it has no duplicates and need not be read.
 - Optionally, ignore small files (where linking would not save much
space anyway)
 - Per bug #263782, if files of a given size all differ in ownership
and/or permissions, they need not be read.  (Actually I would like the
option of ignoring ownership and permissions.  In a read-only backup
it might be okay to link files with differing ownership and
permissions.)
 - If there are exactly two files of a given size, ownership, and
permissions, then use "diff -q" to compare them (so the two files are
read only up to the first difference).
 - If there are more than two files of a given size, then use md5sum
to identify probable duplicate files.  To guard against false matches,
I would advocate checking with "diff -q".  In that case, I suggest
calculating the md5sum only of the leading part of the file (say, the
first 4096 bytes).  If differences are found in the leading parts of
the files then of course the remainders of the files need not be read.
Other users might not insist on the "diff -q" check, in which case the
md5sum should of course be calculated on the entire file.

Unfortunately, I'm not enough of a perl programmer to provide a patch.

Ok, I've set up packages for peercast along with libpeercast1 and 
libpeercast-dev.

I tried to follow debian policy, but did not implement autotools.
As far has I have tried, including  should work when 
libpeercast-dev is installed.

Then gnome-peercast will be able to build depend on libpeercast-dev and 
runtime depend on libpeercast1.

I can't find any mention of -q options in the ldconfig(8)
man page (provided by libc6_2.3.2.ds1-22) or ldconfig with
"-?" "--help" or "--usage" options.  Perhaps it was at one
time used to mean the opposite of --verbose ?

If the -q option is meant to be a synomyn for --quiet, then I suggest one
of the following patches:

Sounds like a genuine bug to me.

Two options here:

1. force the edited patch to be 'unpatched' before dpep invocation
  -> a less pleasant experience to those who are used to the current behavior,
 but it's broken anyway?
2. store the original patch in debian/patched/ and use that for unpatching 
  -> this will be an incompatible change which may break more.

At the request of the sasl maintainer, postfix does not Depend: on sasl2
modules.  using postfix-tls probably means that you need to install
sasl2 (woody's postfix-tls used sasl1.5), and configure that.

The accept function is called with an uninitialised argument.  Therefore,
it fails.  This makes network play impossible.  The fix is pretty easy.
I plan to take over maintainance of this package and fix the bug with
the next upload.

Reproduce:
- start 2 instances of the program.  Select OK and Initiate network game in
  both
- set up one to be server, the other client (to localhost) and click OK
- The server gives an error, the client waits for the server.
