Why did you install the 32-bit version? You have a 64-bit system, right? A few months ago, I installed Jessie 32-bit LXDE desktop in VirtualBox on a 64-bit host (Wheezy 64-bit) to test video streaming from different sources. Videos ran awful like what you describe. I reinstalled, but the 64-bit version. Videos streamed perfectly. Everything else remained the same. I just let the installer do its thing. Why GNOME3? Could be it's the problem. I've never been able to try it on my systems. It won't run. My plain vanilla graphics cards just don't have support for it. I get the "fallback" desktop. Also, GNOME3 has become a bloated resource hog, IMHO. So, first try the 64-bit version with GANOME3, and if that doesn't solve the problem look to a lightweight desktop like LXDE or XFCE, or just a window manager. And, of course, check you've got the latest video driver installed. B

This is possible to do, but if for any reason you (or something you ran where you didn't necessarily know the side effects of) deleted your /var/lib/apt/lists/ at some point, apt-get update will not automatically restore the package lists from the CDs. You have two options: A. Switch over to use a network mirror for installations. In that case, remove the cdrom lines (but _only_ the cdrom lines) and add something like the following to your sources.list: deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main Then run apt-get update again. B. Continue using the DVDs, but have APT re-read the lists of packages. For that, also remove the cdrom lines, and then run the following command: apt-cdrom add It will prompt you to insert the DVD. After it has copied the list from the DVD and you get the command line back, run it again and repeat the process for all 3 DVDs. Then run apt-get update again. After either of these procedures, you should be able to install the package you wanted to install. IMPORTANT: There's a subtle difference between both of the methods: the network mirrors carry only the _latest_ Jessie point release, which is now 8.4. So if you add a network mirror, there will be a few upgrades available and you'll upgrade to that next point release. If you stick with the DVDs, you'll remain on 8.3 with the exception of security updates, which you have enabled. > # jessie-updates, previously known as 'volatile' > # A network mirror was not selected during install. (It shouldn't hurt, as all packages in wheezy-backports should also be in jessie in basically the same version, but it's not what you should have there.) If you need backports _for_ jessie, replace that with jessie-backports. See http://backports.debian.org/ and http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/ for details. Since the current version of request-tracker4 is available in both the main Debian archive as well as the security repository (because of a security update from last August, see DSA 3335-1), my suspicion is that you _only_ have the security archive enabled in your sources.list _or_ the download of the main sources.list failed for some reason. Maybe Stretch has support for it? Maybe switching between modesetting and intel X driver is what you need, depending on which is in use now. /var/log/Xorg.0.log will say which video driver is in use. If it's not intel or modesetting, X is running on an inferior fallback driver. https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/4cojj9/it_is_probably_time_to_ditch_xf86videointel/ could provide some insight on driver selection, but you still may need Xorg or video driver or both from unstable. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Salu2
Choppy video on Youtube
Hi all, First, I'm asking for help on this list because I've observed this to be a very august group :) and I'm actually a bit in awe to be in the presence of Debian developers... I've only been using Debian for a few weeks -- I'm not new to Linux or Unix, although I'm still a relative beginner. Here's my problem -- when I stream certain videos on Youtube, I consistently get choppy playback performance, whereby the video freezes and restarts randomly, with the audio getting out of sync from that point forward. The problem is NOT due to the video still being downloaded -- I know this because the progress bar shows that the download is way ahead of my viewing progress. Here are my specs: - Debian Jessie 32-bit (I had installed 8.3 and subsequently ran some updates, but I don't know how to check to see if I'm up to 8.4) - Gnome 3 - Firefox 45.0.1 - Flash is NOT installed - flashplugin-nonfree is NOT installed - neither gnash nor pepper are installed - example of a video that gets choppy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6Tok9KUjTw (the problem seems to start during the "man on the street" segments) - When the choppiness is happening, System Monitor tells me that one of my four CPUs is maxing out at 100% at least half the time Hardware: - Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series (Intel(R)) - 3551 - Intel Pentium CPU N3540 @ 2.16GHz x 4 (2M Cache, up to 2.66 GHz) - 4GB Single Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (4GBx1) - Graphics: Intel Bay Trail x86/MMX/SSE2 I would love to receive help from this list... thanks much much in advance! -Harris

CUDA 6.x in testing?
Hi, Some weeks ago, nvidia drivers v352 entered in testing. Since those drivers no longer support older cards, a v340 legacy driver package was created. That is what I am using currently. The problem now is with CUDA. I suspect that available CUDA drivers are also working only with newer cards. Is there any solution in the spirit of "cuda-legacy" libraries? Thanks, -- Alberto

This might free just enough space for the time being, but in the long run it is not going to suffice because of the ever growing size of the kernel. A possible long term solution is to move the kernel modules to /usr/lib/modules and make /lib/modules a symlink to /usr/lib/modules. This requires that /usr is mounted by the initramfs. Cheers, Sven
Re: How do I set different JAVA_HOME for different users?
Hi, Jaimz Fairfax wrote: > The internet seemed to be convinced that it had to be done via systemd > user.conf. That opinion does not have to be wrong. It depends on the level of software which you want to influence. Environment variables are a very fundamental feature. Programs can see them even if they have not been started by a shell. But of course, the settings in the shell cannot influence what those programs see. So it is sometimes necessary to use the init software or the desktop to define the variable names and values for programs. On the other side ot the spectrum, you may write wrapper programs around the programs which you want to influence. Those wrappers would set up the desired environment variables before starting the desired program. In the most simple case this would be a shell script like #!/bin/sh export JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64" android-emulator ...options... So you can set up different environments per program rather than per user. Have a nice day :) Thomas

Those two might suggest some missing library. Try to do e.g. ldd mutt on some terminal window. What's the output? Same with iceweasel? Other than that, an "strace mutt" might give you a hint towards the last things your program is doing before giving its last gasp. > Three: where is the utility file ? Clearly an alternative to Flash is desirable -- I wonder if we are really there yet. HTML5 implementation in for example iceweasel in Jessie, as well as what I have in Google Chrome on my Android tablet, seems a bit basic -- can't for example make the video full-screen as there doesn't seem to be a screen gadget to do that. Maybe this is a specific player on a specific site, but I thought the idea behind HTML5 was to standardise such things? Maybe there's a key combination but how does one know that? And stability seems to be a problem, I've seen a couple of videos that don't play all the way through with an HTML5 player but switch to Flash and it works... I'd like to see the back of Flash, for all the reasons you've cited, but it seems you have to _really_ care to make the compromises necessary to do that right now. Anyway, we've wandered away from the topic a little now, which is my fault, so apologies for that. Mark
Three Problems Yet Remaining
Assembled Wisdom! The first and most important problem is: my iceweasel crashes instantaneously upon being invoked, whether from the Activities list on the LH side or from the command line. It was totally reliable under wheezy. Second: my mutt, invoked from the terminal/command line. crashes instantaneously also. Before I resigned myself to the gnome environment, it ran fine. Three: where is the utility file ? I used this all the time in previous Debian installations. Any help/suggestions much appreciated! Alan

Hello, I have upgrade my samba PDC from 3.xx (lenny) to 4.1 (jessie). ldap and samba shares work all fine. When I try to add a user I get the following smbpasswd -a foobar New SMB password: Retype new SMB password: ldapsam_create_user: Unable to allocate a new user id: bailing out! Re: How do I set different JAVA_HOME for different users?
Hi, assuming you are running bash as shell, there are the startup files for login and shell start. >From man bash: /etc/profile The systemwide initialization file, executed for login shells /etc/bash.bashrc The systemwide per-interactive-shell startup file ~/.bash_profile The personal initialization file, executed for login shells ~/.bashrc The individual per-interactive-shell startup file I have most of my personal preferences in ~/.bashrc . Stuff like: export LC_COLLATE="C" export HISTCONTROL="ignoredups" export PS1='\u@\h:\W> ' So i guess it would be a good place to set export JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64" Have a nice day :) Thomas

Jessie (8.4) or Wheezy (7.10)? Maybe the storage controller is too new for the Kernel included in the version you try to install. Please provide the output of "lspci" for this system. Debian can't see raid virtual drive
Greetings! We have some problems with installing Debian on our server. The machine is: http://www.fujitsu.com/fts/products/computing/servers/primergy/rack/rx1330m1/ . We can't to proceed installation with step "Partitioning". There are no disk (raid 10 configured) to select to start partitioning. Rather there is no drivers to see this disk. Is there any resolution of this issue?
How do I set different JAVA_HOME for different users?
I am running debian unstable, systemd version 229.I am learning Android development. Android Studio uses JAVA_HOME = /usr/java/jdk1.8.0_66.Some of the code I want to investigate uses Apache maven and that wants JAVA_HOME = /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64 I setup user2 so that when logging in JAVA_HOME is automatically set for maven.Except nothing I try will make it work.export JAVA_HOME="/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64" works in a terminal, but only for that terminal. The internet thinks that /home/user2/.config/systemd/user.conf withDefaultEnvironment=JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64will work. It doesn't. Thanks, Jaimz
