[Bug 318358] [NEW] Audio does not work for some wmv files

2009-01-17 Thread James Javurek-Humig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Looking at the properties for the file, the following information is
given:

Video
Codec: Microsoft Windows Media 9
Framerate: 8 frames per second

Audio
Codec: Windows Media Audio Speech

Properties also claims that no audio channels are present, however I
have played the file in Windows Media Player (Grudgingly) and it
definitely had audio.

This is a problem on several files from the same publisher (New Mexico
State University, but the download site is password protected and I
would have to get permission to post somewhere else). Some files from
the same site work great. Properties of the files that do work show
audio as being "WMA Version 8"

Ubuntu Version: Ubuntu 8.10
- the Intrepid Ibex

Package Version (Totem): Totem Movie Player 2.24.3

I cannot attach the file due to ownership issues, my apologies.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 313724] Re: hibernate doesn't work

2009-01-17 Thread Ilya
I also have exactly the same bug in Intrepid amd64 when using swapfile
instead of swap partition.

Unfortunately, swap file is the only option to use on a tripple-boot
MacBook/Pro (Ubuntu, Mac OSX, WinXP). Long story short, individual
limitations of GRUB, Mac OSX, WinXP and EFI conspire against using any
extended partitions, limiting to 4 MBR partitions, one of which is taken
by GUID/GPT/EFI partition. That leaves no swap partition. I hope use
case on MacBook/MacBookPro will raise priority of the bug.

Just my 2 cents: It looks like the disk is removed before the memory
image has been written. It smells like a race condition. Perhaps,
somewhere in the kernel/PM code there is a check for not removing or
postponing removal of a swap partition, but for partition with swap file
there is no such check.

Ubuntu is not alone here - cross to Red Hat Bug #466408
(https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=466408). Should it be sent
upstream?

[Bug 316515] Re: Closing laptop lid partially changes GNOME theme settings

2009-01-17 Thread Marc A. Donges
I have added screenshots for different themes. *-good shows the actual
theme, *-broken shows the desktop after one cycle of closing and opening
the lid.

I have now made the observation that the theme change happens when
opening the lid, not when closing the lid.

[Bug 175191] Re: f-spot changes timestamp in an incorrect way

2009-01-17 Thread bobodod
Is anything being done about this? F-Spot is touted as a major feature of
Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/810features/photos/

but this bug ruins date and time data attached to imported photos, and
for good. It makes F-Spot completely unusable for me since I want this
information intact. I imagine there are few, if any, people who feel
differently. It seems as though this should be considered of High
importance at the Gnome bug-list, yet there's been no activity at all.
That is, as far as I can tell. I see the "attachments" at the bottom of
the Gnome Bugzilla page but don't know what to make of them.

It looks like the first step is to elevate the Priority and Severity of the bug:
http://live.gnome.org/Bugsquad/TriageGuide#head-a30bd0d8437bffda426b7aba01a1f9ac32acb0c5

Is that right?

Or perhaps it would be better to drop into the #bugs IRC channel to see if I
can generate some discussion on this topic:
http://developer.gnome.org/projects/bugsquad/

Anyway, if there's any way I can help please let me know. I have no
programming training, but don't mind learning.

[Bug 209532] [NEW] Accessibility keyboard settings get lost

2009-01-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Feisty i386, Hardy Beta AMD64 (at least)

When the Keyboard Accessibility settings for Enabling Sounds and
Modifier Keys have been set - but NOT set to disable if more than one
key is pressed - the settings stop working fairly rapidly in Hardy AMD64
and after most reboots in Feisty.

1. This is extremely annoying for those of us who need to hear when a
modifier key is pressed.

2. In Hardy AMD64 the Caps Lock key does not beep when modifier sounds
are enabled - in Feisty it does.

Please - this has been reported for years - please can more attention be
paid to this minority group of users who need their Accessibility
settings to be remembered by the system. It really is very important to
some of us.

Thanks ...
David

[Bug 318344] [NEW] Brasero cannot lock empty DVD disk for burning

2009-01-17 Thread Dmitri
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

"Session error : the drive can't be locked (ongoing burning process)
(brasero_burn_record burn.c:2524)"
This is error reported after pressing Burn button.
Sequence:
- insert empty DVD-R into drive
- choose Brasero when asked what I want to launch
- select and add files to be burned
- press Burn, select options... got error

1) System version: Ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid)
GNOME 2.24.1
Kernel: 2.6.27-9-generic

I expect is starts burning the data. (I remember that creating DVD copy
did work from Brasero)

Re: [Bug 318240] Re: can't burn disks

2009-01-17 Thread spinner
Hi Adam
Thanks for the interest.
I also tried Brasero - for some reason the disk is bot being recognized. The
icon appears on my desktop as a blank disk. I've tried this many times since
I've installed 8.10 and with both drives. The insert blank disk box appears
repeatedly and the blank disk icon is on my desktop.

[Bug 138932] Re: Ekiga keeps changing my network interface to VMNET interfaces when I take my laptop offline

2009-01-17 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Still a problem in Intrepid. With virtualization becoming more and more
prevalent, this is becoming more and more of a problem. I'm running
into it with libvirt network devices. Regardless of what I set inside
Ekiga, it routinely reselects the same libvirt interface as the address
to use, which of course doesn't work as expected.

[Bug 317437] [NEW] GNOME interface with vertical alignment of panels/applets etc.

2009-01-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This is not a real bug report but a feature request.

Nowadays, more and more devices are equipped with wide screens, where the
available wide space on the screen may be nicely utilized using possible
vertical alignment for DE controls, especially for more o less standard
1280x800, 1024x600 notebook and netbook(!) panel resolutions. Currently,
components composing GNOME interface are not really suitable for vertical
alignment. Just try it out, and you will see what I mean. Some points w.r.t.
vertical alignment:
- there is no (at least straight-forward) way to assign fixed size for icons on
the panels, they are scaled with the width of the panel
- icons on the panel are aligned vertically, there is no way (?) to change this
- window list applet application buttons: size is scaled strangely
- clock applet aligns text vertically until it might fit o_O
- some icons (like in nm-applet, widow selector applet) do not scale
- notification area applet: aligns with the panel, not possible to align it
horizontally
- widening of the vertically aligned panel really screws everything

To conclude: I tried it out a few times, but it seems that there is no
way to come up with kind of nice and usable composition for desktop
interface elements if one wants interface based on vertical alignment of
components, although an option for such alignment is kinda available.

[Bug 317452] [NEW] Proposal: interactive progress bar

2009-01-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

While installing Ubuntu once more on a friends machine, I thought of the
interactive progress bar element for wizard-type applications. Basically, it
should provide very fast intuitive way for the person:
* to get an idea on how far he/she is in the step-wise process of some sort
* fast switch to particular relevant step (like go back few steps to change a
name)
* ...

I may sketch it as follows:
[<]  [++S1++][++S2][S3][S4][S5]   [>]

In the middle there is a progress bar like element, which is composed of
click-able areas with short description plus a possible mouse-over or
similar pop-ups with a more elaborate description, so that a person may
really go back a few steps in one click to change some relevant
information or do/redo actions on a particular step a while back. On a
sides - some advance to previous/next step controls.

In the example above the person is on a current step S2, further steps
like S3 S4 S5 might be inactive, while activation of active elements
follows some logic.

Next, next step:
[<]  [++S1++][++S2++][++S3++][++S4]  [S5]   [>]

Sometimes, you realize, that you might have given not entirely correct
response a while back. Here, going with a mouse over the progress bar
and reading concise descriptions (if short step names is not enough)
person may be able to go back exactly to required step without multiple
use of go-back control element.

In my opinion such a control or set of controls (I do not know how
complex will it be to implement something like this) might be very
handy, since user may very fast recognize how far he is in the process
using just graphical feedback to get an estimate instead of realizing
what actually step 3 out of 7 means, and additionally go back few steps
at once.

Hope, that I made the description and intention clear.

Sure. Here are before/after stats:

Otherwise idle, just sitting here:
CPUs at <5% each (x2) user, <1% sys, almost 2 GB memory, (89 MB free), 0 swap
in use, load 0.03, 0.04, 0.09. No CUP hogs, xorg using 1.5% mem, nautilus,

As soon as I unplug:
CPUs spike, xorg steady at 30%, no memory change, load average spikes to 0.62,
0.19, 0.13

No change plugging back in.

After my change-account/quit/log in hack, xorg back down to 4%ish

[Bug 310940] [NEW] Mounting a DAV resource fails with http error

2009-01-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I like to mount a DAV resource.

First trouble is that the resource is only reachable via https, which is
workaroundable by editing the bookmar and extend the dav:// by davs://

But the share still does not work, as the resource
"davs://server/davfolder" generates a 301, as the leading slash is
missing - other clients like cadaver just go on and issue the request
with a trailing slash, but gnome/nautilus stops and errors out.

Desired fixes:
- make SSL an option in the connect server dialog for DAV
- honor redirects (like cadaver)

[Bug 318319] [NEW] Problem with wireless internet connection

2009-01-17 Thread wordsmyth
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I've reported this problem before, but have had no response. I recently
upgraded from Ubuntu 8.4 to 8.10 and now find that each time I put my
laptop on hibernate or standby, my wireless internet connection is lost
when I resume. I have to re-boot to get it back. This makes the
hibernate/standby function useless. I didn't have this problem using
Ubuntu 8.4... and I don't have it when I use my ethernet connection with
8.10. Can anyone help to resolve this problem?

[Bug 202456] Re: Gnome wine runs all programs without window's minimize button

2009-01-17 Thread André Pirard
>
> We are closing this bug report because it lacks the information we need
> to investigate the problem, as described in the previous comments.
Because no one with a running 8.10 would spend 10 min to make a check, I
have spent almost 10 hours of my unavailable time on this and here's the
result ...

1) another more powerful laptop was passing by, with a chance to install
Wine while running liveCD, and I hired it for a while
2) I downloaded and burned 8.10 desktop iso (on 8.04.1+)
Brasero told me that there was a burn error but the CD seemed perfect
3) I booted this CD and, not a given thing, WiFi was running
I ran Synaptic and, despite all sources turned on and updated, there was
no "wine" to find !!!
4) I asked the owner of this laptop if I could make a partition and he
agreed if I explained him how to make a backup and I made one
5) I fetched and burned 8.10 desktop (on 8.04.1+ again)
Brasero told me that there was a burn error but the CD was perfect
I looked into that, Brasero reports a 'device busy' error and it seems
obvious that it's because the disk has an autorun using the drive at the
same time Brasero wants to check the CD. This seems to be Bug #296146
and I wonder why that bug is "incomplete".
6) I wanted to test upgrading 8.04 to 8.10 and, after doing so, WiFi was
not working. This is another bug that took me much time to work around.
Also, there was no shutdown applet but someone who would argue it's just
aesthetics.
7) Having upgraded, I finally found wine in Synaptics and I finally was
able to make the test.

Is that what you required?
That laptop will be away in two weeks.
Please don't wait until then to ask more questions about 8.10.

Almost one year after reporting this bug, the same problem remains
exactly as described, in 8.04.1+ and 8.10+.

Is making these sorts of difficult to do tests the good method to solve
the problem? Or shouldn't the problem rather be analyzed, which I can
help effectively with 8.04 tests when I'm at it without having to
install systems that only other people run?

Friends I advised running Windows applications on 8.04.1 are asking if a
patch will be available for their system and when. What should I reply
to help them not return to Windows?

[Bug 198134] Re: evince not respecting default printer

2009-01-17 Thread Samuel Schluep
I confirm this behavior on intrepid (Ubuntu 8.10). When I open the
print... dialog in Evince Document Viewer, another printer than the
default one is selected. I set the default printer using the Ubuntu menu
System > Preferences > Default Printer. The default printer is correctly
preselected in other applications such as Firefox, gedit, Thunderbird,
OpenOffice...

Neither ~/.cups/lpoptions nor /etc/cups/lpoptions seem to work on my
computer.

I do not know, if this belongs to this bug, but found it right after the
report.

Maybe this could also be a problem with alsa?? Very hard to report this

[Bug 318313] [NEW] scrollbar disappears from a tab in nautilus

2009-01-17 Thread zkam83
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

It happens when I have a nautilus window open with 2 tabs; one is local
directory and the other is a remote sftp directory. When I drag a file
from the local directory tab to the other tab, the scrollbar on the
local one disappears. Meaning not all files can be seen. It goes back to
normal after I hit refresh.

2009-01-17 Thread Endolith
Well, the file association would be used for that, right? Or are .exe
files not associated with Wine by default?

Here's a mockup of what I'm imagining. I'm not sure there's really a
precedent for this, though. If you have SVG files associated with
Inkscape, you don't see SVG thumbnails with a little Inkscape emblem,
for instance. (Though maybe you should?)

[Bug 273770] [NEW] links won't work after a reboot

2009-01-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The creation of links to files or folders is broken in Ubuntu. I believe
this is a bug.

First, in Ubuntu, it is possible to create what people normally call a LINK or
SHORTCUT. For example, you can go
APPLICATIONS > ACCESSORIES > CALCULATOR and on the CALCULATOR and
get these 2 options:

Add this launcher to panel
Add this launcher to desktop

That actually works. If you create LINKS or SHORTCUTS (what Ubuntu is
calling a "launcher") using the above right-click menu, you get working
links.

HOWEVER, and here is where the bug appears.

Let's say you have a file or folder buried 5 levels down in your
filesystem, and you don't want to have to dig through the File Browser
every time you need it. You SHOULD be able to create a LINK to that
folder or file and put it on your DESKTOP or on the "PANEL" (better name
would be "toolbar", but whatever).

I will give a specific example. I wanted to put a link to the following
folder on my DESKTOP:

/media/disk-2/Documents and Settings/Steve Smith

Here's what I did:

1. Open the File Browser and dig down to that folder
2. Right click on the folder named "Steve Smith"
3. Choose the option "Make link"
4. Drag the newly created link to my desktop.

Now, if I immediately test the link that I moved to my desktop, it
WORKS.

However, if I reboot my computer, the link is broken.

Same is true with copying a link to the "Panel"
It works when you first copy the link, but when you reboot, the link is broken.

Thirdly, if you create a link to a FILE, the link ONLY works if you
don't move it anywhere, and it won't work if you reboot. If you move the
link to your desktop, for example, it gives an error link "Could not
launch application: "Failed to execute child process
"/root/Desktop/Another" (No such file or directory)"

These are all bugs.

If Ubuntu cannot create working links to file or folders that survive a
reboot, that item should not show up in the right-click menu when you
click on a file or folder.

package under the assumption you're using a standard Ubuntu build.

Cheers, Tim.

Actually, DVD playback is undergoing major improvements at the moment,
and we hope it will be working much better in Jaunty and later. This is
why we can't really hope bugs will be fixed in Intrepid, or maybe via an
update at some point. Thanks for reporting bugs, anyway!

2009-01-17 Thread Milan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 41335 ***

It must be a Totem issue, but DVD playback is undergoing a major
rewrite, and this problem is likely to be fixed in Intrepid, or will be
very soon in the next release. We would appreciate if you can test it in
Jaunty, then we'll investigate it. Fixing bugs about DVD playback in
Hardy won't be done, sadly. Thanks for your report!

[Bug 318292] [NEW] Gnome-mouse-properties: Add sensitivity setting to touchpad settings

Public bug reported:

The cursor speed of the touchpad on my laptop (thinkpad sl300) is really
slow. It takes about four sweeps across the touchpad to get to the other

[Bug 318280] [NEW] Jaunty A3: gnome-brightness-applet hangs gnome on Sony VGN-CR120E

2009-01-17 Thread Walter_Wittel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)"
Kernel version: 2.6.28-4-generic
g-p-m version:2.24.0
HAL version: 0.5.12rc1

Related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-
manager/+bug/243904 but now the problem is a hang rather than not
working. Other bug was for Intrepid and this is for Jaunty Alpha 3 Live
CD. I'm not sure I got the right package but ubuntu-bug -p gnome-
brightness-applet said there wasn't a package by that name.

I had tried brightness gnome-brightness-applet on Jaunty Alpha 2 (it
worked fine) and was ready to install Alpha 3 but since this has been
broken since Intrepid I tried the Live CD first. Unfortunately the fix
in Alpha 2 is gone, and rather than gnome-brightness-applet doing
nothing, it now hangs gnome (cursor moves but no mouse left clicks
work).

Repro:
1) Boot Jaunty Alpha 3 Live CD on Sony VGN-CR120E
2) Right-click panel and "Add to panel..."
3) Add brightness applet
4) Click the brightness applet and try to move the slider to adjust screen
brightness

At this point gnome is mostly hung. Mouse moves and I can ctl-alt-f1 to
get a terminal, but right and left clicking on the UI doesn't work, and
I can't alt-tab to switch applications.

I've attached the output of gnome-power-bugreport.sh. Please let me know
if anything else would be helpful.

[Bug 277203] Re: gnome-sound-properties setting to disable login sound not honored

2009-01-17 Thread jason_1
I believe this is a problem in GNOME, not Ubuntu.

I have experianced this same bug in Arch Linux with GNOME 2.24.2-1.
I have also tried what ABE3K said, and it did play my custom sound, or no sound
when it was disabled.

I am running on a slower machine, and I have noticed sometimes that
GNOME settings (such as icon themes) wont be loaded immediately on
startup, and instead the defaults will be used. This hasnt happened
recently, but I wonder if this sound issue could have a similar cause.

[Bug 77945] Re: Windows key producing instead of just

2009-01-17 Thread Korey
I have this bug as well in Ubuntu 8.10 x64. I wanted to setup some
keyboard shortcuts for volume up, down, & mute.

In the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog (System -> Preferences -> Keyboard
Shortcuts), if I attempt to assign Super + PageUp as a shortcut, it just
assigns it to "Super L".

So, while I can use the left and right Super keys, and the Menu key for
volume up, down, and mute, I can't use them as modifiers, which would be
more useful.
