[Bug 411898] Re: Add preference to turn off conversation logging

2010-06-23 Thread Richard Waters
+1 I would prefer to be able to do this as well.

I would like to know, is this actually a function of the fact to delete
the files manually you have to sudo but the program doesnt run as root
or have those privileges. So when you click "clear" in the previous
conversations window it vanishes, but doesn't delete the file because
the program doesn't have the right privileges?

See, I notice that you do it the first time and it vanishes, but go into
a chat window, or go back into the same previous chat window and they
are there again.

I am not able to delete them unless I sudo in terminal manually? Is
there a way to run a terminal command after a program shuts down, could
this be done as a "patch" for the moment?

[Bug 593226] Re: gnome panels suddenly have a 25 second delay after session load

2010-06-23 Thread franco_bez
I had the same issue, the panels took a long time to start.

I didn't have the passwordless login enabled.

But turning "passwordless login" on, (remove the mark from "ask for
password" then click OK) and then turning it off again, (set the mark
"ask for password" and click OK) fixed the problem.

[Bug 508632] Re: [FFe] Toggle button for Nautilus location field gone

2010-06-23 Thread computer_freak_8
I have found a suitable work-around for my needs; I was one of the many
frustrated by this change, and yet another reason I feel that Ubuntu's
overall progress is decreasing.

I take no credit for figuring this out, but the post that helped me is here:
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/06/nautilus-elementary-2311-now-with.html

I followed the instructions for adding the PPA, and then clicked "Edit",
"Customize toolbars...". I have configured mine as depicted here:
http://s636.photobucket.com/albums/uu87/no1unorightnow/?action=view¤t=Screenshot-CustomizeToolbar.png

That configuration yielded this layout:
http://s636.photobucket.com/albums/uu87/no1unorightnow/?action=view¤t=Screenshot-tmg-FileBrowser.png

I hope this works for others, too.

Qué tal, Dr. Kenobi!

It's great that you're interested into my enhancement; Maybe the disk
space bar is a major request, but an eject/remove button looks still
enought :) First of all, I'm not a programmer (yet), but I enjoy making
mockups and giving ideas aboit functionalities and interfaces; so I call
for help to people who knows about GTK, the GNOME panels and menus, and
can apply it, not just like an Ubuntu papercut, also as a GNOME default
feature (maybe the GNOME devs are planning something similar for GNOME
Shell into GNOME 3.0, but not for the classic interface (because the
GShell willbe optional, and Ubuntu is not going to carry it in Maverick.

If it finish like a simple papercut for Ubuntu, thatps right, but it
would be awesome of all the GNOME distros can use it :)

Hey, keep in touch, cause in some days I'll attach you a new and more
clearly mock up ;) and another ideas that I have in mind...

Greetings!

To regression test this we need to poke a few test values into gconf,
run the gnome-terminal (possibly with --disable-factory to ensure we are
running the copy we think??) and then in the terminal context run a
script to check the env values. I can play with --command or --execute
to get the script to run in the terminal context and I can lookup how to
poke config values into gconf. However I am unfamiliar with the test
harness that this will go into. Can you point me to and existing test I
can emulate?

[Bug 214370] Re: Logout/Shutdown Sound Not Working

2010-06-23 Thread Nelux
This works for me: (you need sox installed. $sudo aptitude install sox)

To sound when you logout, put this code in /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default:

#!/bin/sh
sleep 1
nohup play /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-logout.ogg &
exit 0

It doesn't work without sleep 1, because the session closes too fast.

To sound when you shutdown or reboot:

- In /etc/init.d create a file called, for example, logout-sound. Assign
it execution permission and put in it this content:

#!/bin/sh
play /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-logout.ogg
exit 0

- In /etc/rc0.d create a symbolic link to logout-sound /etc/rc0.d$sudo ln -s
../init.d/logout-sound S05logout-sound
- Do the same for /etc/rc6.d

And that's all. The sound first plays, and then the system closes, so
please, don't play the 14 minutes song in a gadda da vida by Iron
Butterfly :-)

[Bug 597893] [NEW] login password not synced with seahorse

2010-06-23 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

I found this in http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/ideatorrent/idea/17813 -
but it's not an enhancement request/idea, it's clearly a bug.

To reproduce:

1. Create new user
2. Logon as the user
3. Connect to a wireless network that requires a password
4. Change your login (UNIX) password using the "About me..." tool and the
"Change password" button.
5. Logout of your Gnome session.
6. Login (with the new password) - you will get prompted to “Enter password to
unlock your login keyring” and your OLD user password will be required.

Workaround: Manually change the keyring password.

This bug is also described here:
http://karuppuswamy.com/wordpress/2010/06/18/enter-password-to-unlock-
your-keyring-prompt-in-ubuntu/

The user is not prompted in the first place that he/she is using
Seahorse to store the wireless network key (which is good UI design,
hiding unnecessary complexity). This makes it even more confusing when
it turns out that the old password is needed to unlock the keyring. This
should be synced.

[Bug 151218] Re: gnome-about-me password change when using password too simple or pam-cracklib

2010-06-23 Thread Alexandros Papadopoulos
Seems like a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/544570

Also, I can confirm the bug in 10.04 i386. Changing the password to
something cracklib doesn't like results in a hung GUI, with no "your
password is too simple/similar" feedback.

[Bug 409409] Re: nautilus hangs on preview of SVG with embedded TIF

2010-06-23 Thread Matthew Newton
I have this problem too (fully up-to-date Lucid 10.04), although it
doesn't matter whether the TIFF file has an absolute or a relative path
in the SVG.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Create a TIFF: $ import test.tiff
2. Open Inkscape, drag the new test.tiff in.
3. Save as SVG.
4. Browse to the containing folder with Nautilus, or $ eog test-svg-file

The SVG can be modified to make the TIFF file path absolute, and the
issue still occurs. Does not happen with, say, JPEG files.

I use a lot of TIFF files in SVG, and this bug has been around quite a
while now (not sure when it started, as Nautilus used to crash because
of gradients in SVG files, so the cause is now different but the effect
is the same!)

[Bug 597836] [NEW] Right-clik on applet (status icon) does nothing

2010-06-23 Thread José Alburquerque
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

This has been happening for a while and I don't know if it's a bug or an
enhancement. When I right click on the status icon of rhythmbox, no
context menu pops up, nothing is shown and nothing happens. Some time
ago, a context menu would pop up allowing to control playing, etc.

Presently, if I click (a normal click with the left button), the context
menu shows up. Before, a normal click would simply bring rhythmbox out
of hiding into the front for standard operation.

I think the present operation is a bug and the context menu should be
brought up with a right click while a standard click should bring
rhythmbox to the front as it did before.

[Bug 501207] Re: sound-juicer, rhythmbox, nautilus crash at audio CD insertion

2010-06-23 Thread Paul Broadhead
In the above debug log, there are some values, one
crucial value is that of num in the brasero_medium_read_CD_TEXT()
function that calls _next_CD_TEXT_pack() where the crash happens. This
sets the assumed size of the array who's access is causing the SEGV.
The value is 954437176 probably more that actually allocated. On
another machine running the same version of brasero, the value is 0. If
I prevent the call to _next_CD_TEXT_pack() then the crash does not
happen and the applications appear to function as expected. I'm not
sure what CD_TEXT actually is but the audio CD I have been trying
appears to no use it. I still get the "I/O error" messages of course. :

[85642.694961] sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE
[85642.694968] sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]
[85642.694974] sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] Add. Sense: Illegal mode for this track
[85642.694982] sr 0:0:1:0: [sr0] CDB: Read(10): 28 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 02 00
[85642.694994] end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 0

I think there is a low level problem with the CD driver that needs
fixing but the crash in brasero could possibly be prevented.

[Bug 558872] Re: empathy accounts fail to connect after manually unlocking keyring

2010-06-23 Thread Sarah Strong
I also experience this bug.

Ubuntu Lucid 10.04, clean installed.
My account is set to automatically log in, but empathy and my wireless
connection require passwords from my default keyring. When I start Ubuntu, a
dialog pops up requesting that I unlock my default keyring.

If I wait more than a minute or two before providing my password to this
dialog, I experience this bug:

When I access Empathy via Indicator Applet (envelope) -> Chat, the
Empathy contacts window pops up with my status set to Available but no
accounts visible.

If I go to Edit->Accounts, each of my accounts is set to Enabled but
with the message "Offline - Status is set to offline."

If I change my online status, for instance by setting my status at the
top of the Empathy contact window to Offline and then Available again,
there is no change. Quitting and restarting empathy, however, connects
me properly.

I expect that Empathy stops requesting to connect to services when it's
denied access to the keyring for too long.

Forgive my English and thank you for attending the issue.

I don't know what updates exactly - I didn't really read the update
dialog before accepting it. I just let the system do it's occasionally
system update.
Is there a way to know what was the last system update?

(I asked people in an Ubuntu Chat, and they say Nautilus is taking only
30-50 mega of memory.)

Do you want me to sent you more details?

@Erlan:
No worry I can give you the rational:
an updated gnome-terminal needs a newer version of libvte, which isn't
an option to update as more than 39 packages are depending on it. By
experience, it's more than possible that it will break another since.

This is why we need to be picky on updates (even with stable updates) as
it can contain a lot of regression code.

[Bug 485727] Re: gnome-screensaver incorrectly monitors activity in virtual machines

2010-06-23 Thread bastafidli
I seem to have the same or similar problem. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 as
host and I am running Windows XP as Guest in VMware player 3.1. I am
spending most of my time in the Windows XP guest. My blank screen saver
is set to start after 5 minutes and lock the screen. I can go away
sometimes for more than 5 minutes and the screen saver doesn't start.
When I come back, I can start working and sometimes in few seconds,
sometimes in few minutes, the screensaver suddenly starts and lock my
screen even though I have been moving my mouse or typing (either in the
guest or in the host). This is highly insecure and annoying since the
machine doesn't lock the screen as expected and whoever can come and
work on the machine after the screensaver was supposed to start and use
the machine for minutes before the screensaver suddenly randomly kicks
in.

2010-06-23 Thread Gerhard Maag
Renzo's PPA fix works for me, but it still takes upwards of 45 minutes
just to copy a cd. That's just nuts. Sound Juicer extracts a cd in 4
minutes. For me Brasero remains nearly unusable, even with the fix.
I'd just a soon exact to .wav and burn the tracks as a new project. It
isn't a 1:1 copy, but it doesn't take all day.

2010-06-23 Thread Compholio
After talking with a friend the other day, I would disagree that this
"not a paper cut." One of the first things that I've noticed that new
users do is setup their panels - and the number one problem I see them
encounter is positioning the objects in the first place and the number
two problem is that everything gets screwed up when the screen is
rotated or resized (so this is a HUGE problem with tablet users).

Also, I would say that this issue would be relatively trivial to fix by
slightly adjusting the panel mechanics. Since GTK already uses
containers for scaling areas you can remove the ability to absolutely
position objects by switching to containers and instead expose the
"fill" and "expand" attributes. This way the majority of objects will
automatically butt up against each other (the default and expected
behavior that most users must currently work around using the "lock"
mechanism) but for advanced users there would be the ability to fine-
tune which objects expand and fill. So, with a flexible spacer on the
top panel and the Window List applet on the bottom panel (both set to
expand and fill by default) you would get a sane default where new users
can easily add and remove elements on the panels without taking tons of
time locking and unlocking the panel objects just to get everything to
line up properly.
