[Bug 585209] Re: .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice

2010-10-04 Thread ipsi
This is affecting me too. I cannot create a new user on the target
system, as I do not have the correct permissions (and in any event it
doesn't have a GUI).

This did not occur under Ubuntu 9.10, and has only started happening
since I upgraded (I did *not* do a fresh install) to Ubuntu 10.04.

When I select properties for the file, then "Open With", I see that Open
Office is the only application selected. However, when I double-click on
the file to open it, I get the message "There is no application
installed for OpenDocument Text files". If I then select Open Office
manually, it opens a blank document. If I copy the file locally, then I
can open it and edit it.

I can open other files via SFTP (e.g. text files), so the blank document
part might be an open office problem. However, I'm unsure why it does
not think there is any application that is able to open .odt documents.

Running gnome-open from the command line gives me this:

# gnome-open sftp://u...@host/path/to/doc.odt
Error showing url: No application is registered as handling this file

Is there anything else I can provide you with that might help?

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-10-04 Thread Martin Pitt
Just confirming, for me the bug manifests differently: I have a
1280x1024 external monitor, and X starts in that mode (with a little
help in xorg.conf). However, g-s-d tries to be too clever and switches
it to 1024x768, presumably because xrandr thinks that this is the
highest common resolution with my internal monitor (1280x800). So I now
get two unnecessary modeswitches during boot (my desktop session of
course switches it back to 1280x1024).

So this is indeed a regression.

[Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing

2010-10-04 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@ David
Thanks for your praising comment.

It seems to me that you, and possibly also Martin, assume that $LANG
ought to correspond to the first language in the $LANGUAGE list. That, I
believe, is a misconception, at least from a language-selector
perspective, and I fear that we have talked at cross-purposes so far.

In an attempt to help changing that, I wrote a wiki-page:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GdmLanguageSelectorDissonance

It summarizes my view on where we stand, where we want to go ("Desired
behavior"), and my proposed solution in English. It would be great if
you, Martin and anybody else with an interest in this issue could study
the page and add your possible objections and comments.

Basically, what I hope to convince you about is that since it's only language
that the users can set from GDM, and not any other locale aspects, GDM should
not do anything with the $LANG variable. Not at any point. Never.
Instead GDM should update $LANGUAGE and set $LC_MESSAGES. That appears to be
sufficient to reliably control which language is used in menus and messages.
$LANG is used for the non-translation locale aspects, and its value shall not
be used as a fall back by programs that don't understand $LANGUAGE.

As regards apps that don't understand $LANGUAGE:
> Rather than using a workaround, would it not be better to fix the
> bug in the affected applications? I see you've followed up on
> Firefox already.

If I have understood it correctly, $LANGUAGE is a gettext specific
variable, and certain applications' inability to understand that
variable is not a bug per se. Consequently I think that Ubuntu in any
case shall provide the preferred translation language also via the
$LC_MESSAGES variable, and I don't think that's a workaround. Rather
should the Firefox fix I provide at bug 550222 be considered a
workaround IMO.

I noted that you don't consider this issue a matter for the translation
community. But it's a borderline case, isn't it? ;-)

disabling the "Separate layout for each window" option in keyboard preferences
window.
  3) The second fix, however didn't work for most people, though it might
really reduce the probability of the bug appearing.
  4) The bug happens both on upgrade installs and clean installs of Ubuntu,
confirmed with RC and Alpha 3.
  5) The bug is specific to Ubuntu, not existing in Arch Linux and AgiliaLinux.
  6) There are users who experience this problem with Russian, Slovakian,
Macedonian, Hebrew layots. Having such a problem in final release will make
keyboard use very problematic for users from these countries, so Ubuntu can
lose many users.

Ubuntu-specific issue.
  8) For some users, the bug disappears after 2 to 15 minutes of use.

[Bug 654262] Re: Unable to eject ipod - "volumes on the media are busy"

2010-10-04 Thread jimav
Ok, I'm attaching two log files from running with --debug.

The first (rhythmbox-debug-withchanges.txt) is from a sync which had changes.
PROCEDURE:
  Start rhythmbox, plug in iPod, wait for it to appear in Rhythmbox;
Click the iPod in left pane
Select any song and rightclick->Delete (to force a change)
  iPod rightclick->Sync with Library
  iPod->Eject

RESULT: Displays pop-up with "media are busy" error. Then, after a few
seconds, rhythmbox
prints an assertion error and exits (this happens only when running with
--debug?):
rhythmbox:19359): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_instance_get_private:
assertion `instance != NULL && instance->g_class != NULL' failed

The second is from a run where NO CHANGES were made
(rhythmbox-debug-nochanges.txt).
In this case the pop-up did not appear, but rhythmbox exited with the same
assertion failure.

[Bug 326582] Re: sort order of files listings in nautilus is not alphabetical

2010-10-04 Thread Alan Porter
A good example of the need to sort alphabetically, and not numerically.

I store a lot of bank statements in a folder. They have names like
this:

20090215_monthly_statement.pdf
200903_first_quarter_summary.pdf
20090315_monthly_statement.pdf
20090415_monthly_statement.pdf
20090515_monthly_statement.pdf
200906_second_quarter_summary.pdf
20090615_monthly_statement.pdf

The current numerically-focused sorting algorithm places the summary
statements at the top of the list, followed by all of the monthly
statements.

It's not what I would have wanted. But I also see that this is a heated
issue. So I have found a work-around, which is to insert dashes in the
filenames, like this:

2009-02-15_monthly_statement.pdf
2009-03_first_quarter_summary.pdf
2009-03-15_monthly_statement.pdf
2009-04-15_monthly_statement.pdf
2009-05-15_monthly_statement.pdf
2009-06_second_quarter_summary.pdf
2009-06-15_monthly_statement.pdf

These filename are sorted in date order, as one would expect.

I also have similar problems with photos, which might live in folders
with names like these:

2010-04-25_maker_faire
2010-04_easter
2010-04_new_york
2010-04_spring_outing
2010-05
2010-05-09_mothers_day
2010-05-30_jordan_lake
2010-05_shuttle_launch

Again, the dashes do cause the directories to be sorted into proper
numerical / alphabetical / date order. Without them, the events that
span several days (like the May shuttle launch) appear before the events
on a particular day (like Maker Faire in April).

I do hope that you guys can come to an agreement without alienating each
other.

Alan Porter

[Bug 651731] Re: regression: Monitor label has garbage characters in gnome-display-properties

2010-10-04 Thread David Gibson
Ok. I don't have a /usr/share/hwdata/pnp.ids, but I do have a
/usr/share/libgnome-desktop/pnp.ids, which seems to contain the data you
describe.

Removing one of the entries seems to do the trick: as soon as I removed
the "IBM France" entry, the monitor showed up in the control panel as
"IBM Brasil 20"". Something I didn't mentioned earlier is that while a
string of garbage was the most common symptom before, a few garbage
characters then "France" was also quite common which makes sense now I
know the data is coming from this list.

Nonetheless looks like there is a bug where multiple matching entries in
the table causes the string to be mangled.

[Bug 654836] Re: Default IMAP setting should not be to "delete from server"

2010-10-04 Thread Naren Salem
I recently set up an email client on my Android phone to access my work
email and in the initial configuration steps, I was given choices on
what the client should do when I deleted a message. There was a checkbox
that said "Don't delete emails on server." I really appreciated having
that choice up-front. I agree this should be a WishList and not a bug.

[Bug 575410] Re: clock-applet freezes when clicking on time

2010-10-04 Thread Agenan
Hello. I've run into the same problem as the original bug submitter.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS
Release:10.04
--
$  apt-cache policy packagename gnome-panel
gnome-panel:
  Installed: 1:2.30.2-0ubuntu0.2

$ uname -a
Linux kungfubuntu 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:05:27 UTC 2010
x86_64 GNU/Linux
--

I've never seen this issue till this afternoon. When I kill and reload the
applet, I can right click the clock applet
and perform a variety of operations and the applet doesn't crash (or middle
click and move the applet). However a
left-click results in a crash.

I tried: strace -o clockTrace -Ff -tt -p after a reload and
please find the strace attached. I do not use
Evolution, I do have the Compiz eye-candy installed but using metacity at the
moment. I also have VMware running
on the Ubuntu host. When I left-click on the applet and the applet crashes, ps
shows me the following process:

" 6232 ?S 0:00 /usr/lib/gnome-panel/gnome-clock-applet-
mechanism"

When I connect to that pid via strace, I see the following output before strace
returns in about 30 seconds:
---
restart_syscall(<... resuming interrupted call ...>

) = 0
poll([{fd=5, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=7, events=POLLIN}], 3,
628) = 0 (Timeout)
write(1, "** (process:6232): DEBUG: Exitin"..., 52) = 52
exit_group(1) = ?
---

The strace attached is for the clock-applet process.

Thanks for the bug report. when you delete something it is supposed to
move to trash every other software does that. what do you expect
evolution to do if there is an option to not delete email from server?
should it just hide the mail from your mail list without doing anything

2010-10-04 Thread Erick Brunzell
No doubt there are many related bugs, some may be duplicates, others
not. I'm certainly not sure.

But we're a few days from iso-testing, and one week from final. Do we
actually plan to release with this bug?

Should we not at least have some coherent reference in the release
notes?

If we release as-is I expect we'll regard the big bru-ha-ha over
wallpaper as very minor in comparison.

Color me sad and confused.

[Bug 654867] [NEW] gedit python console NameError when changing colors

2010-10-04 Thread Jason Conti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

In Maverick gedit-2.30.3-1ubuntu1:

When configuring the Python Console plugin, changing the "Command Color"
results in a python NameError:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/gedit-2/plugins/pythonconsole/config.py", line 129, in
on_colorbutton_command_color_set
self.config.color_command = colorbutton.get_color().to_string()

gconf_set_str
v = PythonConsoleConfig.gconf.Value(gconf.VALUE_STRING)
NameError: global name 'gconf' is not defined

This can be fixed by including the prefix PythonConsoleConfig. to two of
the gconf references in /usr/lib/gedit-2/plugins/pythonconsole/config.py
. A patch will be attached.

[Bug 432794] Re: gnome-panel freeze/infinite loop/memory leak

2010-10-04 Thread deathcakes
Same problem occurring here on a dell latitude e6400 - 10.04, autohide
seems to be a trigger, deleting %gconf.xml in .gconf/apps/panel seems to
help by resetting any changes to config but is also bloody annoying. Was
occurring previously on an upgraded 10.04 install, heavily laden with
junk, but has persisted on a completely fresh install. Skype is not a
factor. Configuration changes made while using a dual monitor setup at
work are fine, but cause the crashing when I try to use the builtin
monitor, and any changes using just the builtin monitor cause crashes
the other way.

Any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem would be
awesome, I will post back if I find out anything.

I would like to add that it would be nice if there were a setting for
users like me that optionally displayed "Contains Hidden Files" instead
of "Empty". On more than one occasion I've deleted directories falsely
assuming they were empty when in reality I had files hidden. My own
fault I know but that setting could have saved me the hassle. An few
examples being a desktop background (~/.background.png so I don't have
to see the file in my home dir), .ssh dir with keys and so on.

[Bug 638680] Re: gdm incorrectly configures multi-monitor displays

2010-10-04 Thread Darren Adams
You could be correct. What's described at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings-
daemon/+bug/640807/comments/2 as a workaround seems consistent with my
none-too-scientific findings (i.e. disconnect a monitor to make GDM
display the login window). I also attempted some of the things mentioned
by other people that have made comments (such as disabling mode settings
on my 965G, editing GDM configuration files) without much luck.

I would like to help with this where I can, and it looks like others are
experiencing an issue similar to mine. Would it make sense for you to
mark this bug a identical to the one you mentioned and continue
reporting there?

I said earlier that turning the 'Separate layout for each window' option fixes

I succeeded triggering the bug again with the method described by shoo_ash in

With the 'Separate layout for each window' option turned on, the keyboard
layout changes more frequently (every time you open a new window) so it's
easier to notice the bug with that option turned on.

[Bug 654836] [NEW] Default IMAP setting should not be to "delete from server"

2010-10-04 Thread Naren Salem
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I set up Evolution to fetch my work email, and I noticed that there were
two "Inbox" folders. I deleted one of them and that deleted all my mail
from my server. Maybe there are other issues with showing those two
inboxes and so forth, but my biggest issue here is that the mail on my
server was deleted. (Fortunately I was able to recover from Trash). I

Yes I agree. As I stated on 16th Sept, the key issue has disappeared in
Ubuntu 10.4, as the MP3 player now mounts as a standard USB removable
device. For me that is good enough (though I still desire those meta-
data columns...)

if (!apply_default_configuration_from_file (manager,

[Bug 505085] Re: gnome-settings-daemon extensive disk usage

2010-10-04 Thread Aisthesis
Having this issue as well on every reboot/start. Finally got tired of
it, researched, and found this bug. I have to go into the office twice a
week and it really just started doing this only a few weeks ago. Also,
it only started doing it to me on Lucid. Unless it just took some time
for this problem to appear? I think it would be safe to assume it
affects everyone using Ubuntu+Gnome+Nautilus.

In my case, it took about 2-4 minutes on my laptop for this process to
stop. Laptop HD is only 5400rpm with a 2.3ghz Core2duo. I was at 446mb
and between 25-30k files in the directory. The IO prevents everything
else on the machine requiring read/write from the disk from operating at
an acceptable speed.

What solution do you suggest? Changing the key value just workaround the
issue on some setups to trade with other broken ones. The safe way would
probably to go back to what lucid was doing though

[Bug 461924] Re: empathy won't connect msn protocol

2010-10-04 Thread Thomas Edwards
Empathy hasn't been working on msn for me for the past couple of months I think.
Here's what happens. I start empathy. Initially it says 'offline'. It tries to
connect, showing the connection animation at the top of the contact list
window. Then the animation disappears, then it says 'available'. The only
problem is that none of my msn contacts show up. Google talk and facebook chat
work, msn doesn't.
I've attached the debug file

Can anyone help me with what other information I need to gather in order
to help with the debugging?

[Bug 224475] Re: [MASTER] Volume/brightness/eject key briefly changes window focus (e.g. makes Flash exit full screen)

2010-10-04 Thread Plafuro
Based on Harrison W Hollingsworth's comment i mannaged to find a
workaround aswell.

First of all, in order to find the id of the flash window, we need to
run the following command from a terminal window:

sleep 5 && xwininfo

this will lunch xwininfo after five seconds - in those five seconds play
a flash video full screen. When the time is over, your mouse pointer
will change to a chrosshair, click on the playing video. Go back to the
terminal window and look for a line similar to this one (should be the
first one after the xwininfo version info):

xwininfo: Window id: 0x6108ada "exe"

the text within quotation marks is what we are looking for.

Open CompizConfig settings manager. Go to "General Options" >> "Focus &
Raise Behaviour" tab. At the very bottom, in "Focus Prevention Windows"
add

" || xid=exe "

to that line. Remember to change the text "exe" in this example with
whatever you get in your terminal (i am using a 64bit beta of the flash
player and the name may vary). The window id has to be added withouth
the quotation marks, right after the "equals" sign.

Please report if this works for you

Cheers
