[Bug 585209] Re: .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice
This is affecting me too. I cannot create a new user on the target system, as I do not have the correct permissions (and in any event it doesn't have a GUI). This did not occur under Ubuntu 9.10, and has only started happening since I upgraded (I did *not* do a fresh install) to Ubuntu 10.04. When I select properties for the file, then "Open With", I see that Open Office is the only application selected. However, when I double-click on the file to open it, I get the message "There is no application installed for OpenDocument Text files". If I then select Open Office manually, it opens a blank document. If I copy the file locally, then I can open it and edit it. I can open other files via SFTP (e.g. text files), so the blank document part might be an open office problem. However, I'm unsure why it does not think there is any application that is able to open .odt documents. Running gnome-open from the command line gives me this: # gnome-open sftp://u...@host/path/to/doc.odt Error showing url: No application is registered as handling this file Is there anything else I can provide you with that might help? -- .odt and .ods open with fileroller instead of openoffice https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585209 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor
Just confirming, for me the bug manifests differently: I have a 1280x1024 external monitor, and X starts in that mode (with a little help in xorg.conf). However, g-s-d tries to be too clever and switches it to 1024x768, presumably because xrandr thinks that this is the highest common resolution with my internal monitor (1280x800). So I now get two unnecessary modeswitches during boot (my desktop session of course switches it back to 1280x1024). So this is indeed a regression. -- Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/640807 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 553162] Re: Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing
@ David Thanks for your praising comment. It seems to me that you, and possibly also Martin, assume that $LANG ought to correspond to the first language in the $LANGUAGE list. That, I believe, is a misconception, at least from a language-selector perspective, and I fear that we have talked at cross-purposes so far. In an attempt to help changing that, I wrote a wiki-page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GdmLanguageSelectorDissonance It summarizes my view on where we stand, where we want to go ("Desired behavior"), and my proposed solution in English. It would be great if you, Martin and anybody else with an interest in this issue could study the page and add your possible objections and comments. Basically, what I hope to convince you about is that since it's only language that the users can set from GDM, and not any other locale aspects, GDM should not do anything with the $LANG variable. Not at any point. Never. Instead GDM should update $LANGUAGE and set $LC_MESSAGES. That appears to be sufficient to reliably control which language is used in menus and messages. $LANG is used for the non-translation locale aspects, and its value shall not be used as a fall back by programs that don't understand $LANGUAGE. As regards apps that don't understand $LANGUAGE: > Rather than using a workaround, would it not be better to fix the > bug in the affected applications? I see you've followed up on > Firefox already. If I have understood it correctly, $LANGUAGE is a gettext specific variable, and certain applications' inability to understand that variable is not a bug per se. Consequently I think that Ubuntu in any case shall provide the preferred translation language also via the $LC_MESSAGES variable, and I don't think that's a workaround. Rather should the Firefox fix I provide at bug 550222 be considered a workaround IMO. I noted that you don't consider this issue a matter for the translation community. But it's a borderline case, isn't it? ;-) -- Set $LANGUAGE if the user picks a different locale in gdm, so that language-selector and gdm stop disagreeing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553162 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gdm in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 654262] Re: Unable to eject ipod - "volumes on the media are busy"
Ok, I'm attaching two log files from running with --debug. The first (rhythmbox-debug-withchanges.txt) is from a sync which had changes. PROCEDURE: Start rhythmbox, plug in iPod, wait for it to appear in Rhythmbox; Click the iPod in left pane Select any song and rightclick->Delete (to force a change) iPod rightclick->Sync with Library iPod->Eject RESULT: Displays pop-up with "media are busy" error. Then, after a few seconds, rhythmbox prints an assertion error and exits (this happens only when running with --debug?): rhythmbox:19359): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_instance_get_private: assertion `instance != NULL && instance->g_class != NULL' failed The second is from a run where NO CHANGES were made (rhythmbox-debug-nochanges.txt). In this case the pop-up did not appear, but rhythmbox exited with the same assertion failure. ** Attachment added: "rhythmbox-debug-withchanges.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/654262/+attachment/1672622/+files/rhythmbox-debug-withchanges.txt -- Unable to eject ipod - "volumes on the media are busy" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/654262 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to rhythmbox in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 326582] Re: sort order of files listings in nautilus is not alphabetical
A good example of the need to sort alphabetically, and not numerically. I store a lot of bank statements in a folder. They have names like this: 20090215_monthly_statement.pdf 200903_first_quarter_summary.pdf 20090315_monthly_statement.pdf 20090415_monthly_statement.pdf 20090515_monthly_statement.pdf 200906_second_quarter_summary.pdf 20090615_monthly_statement.pdf The current numerically-focused sorting algorithm places the summary statements at the top of the list, followed by all of the monthly statements. It's not what I would have wanted. But I also see that this is a heated issue. So I have found a work-around, which is to insert dashes in the filenames, like this: 2009-02-15_monthly_statement.pdf 2009-03_first_quarter_summary.pdf 2009-03-15_monthly_statement.pdf 2009-04-15_monthly_statement.pdf 2009-05-15_monthly_statement.pdf 2009-06_second_quarter_summary.pdf 2009-06-15_monthly_statement.pdf These filename are sorted in date order, as one would expect. I also have similar problems with photos, which might live in folders with names like these: 2010-04-25_maker_faire 2010-04_easter 2010-04_new_york 2010-04_spring_outing 2010-05 2010-05-09_mothers_day 2010-05-30_jordan_lake 2010-05_shuttle_launch Again, the dashes do cause the directories to be sorted into proper numerical / alphabetical / date order. Without them, the events that span several days (like the May shuttle launch) appear before the events on a particular day (like Maker Faire in April). I do hope that you guys can come to an agreement without alienating each other. [Bug 651731] Re: regression: Monitor label has garbage characters in gnome-display-properties
Ok. I don't have a /usr/share/hwdata/pnp.ids, but I do have a /usr/share/libgnome-desktop/pnp.ids, which seems to contain the data you describe. Removing one of the entries seems to do the trick: as soon as I removed the "IBM France" entry, the monitor showed up in the control panel as "IBM Brasil 20"". Something I didn't mentioned earlier is that while a string of garbage was the most common symptom before, a few garbage characters then "France" was also quite common which makes sense now I know the data is coming from this list. Nonetheless looks like there is a bug where multiple matching entries in the table causes the string to be mangled. -- regression: Monitor label has garbage characters in gnome-display-properties https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651731 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-desktop in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

""" + + the evolution window gets focused and the taskbars is "alerted" of the + change, but window isn't showed to the user to display the relevant + mailbox + + (see down for more details) + + -- + Binary package hint: indicator-messages See the attached video (i've reduced the resolution to avoid getting a huge video) Most of the time, when using the messaging menu to access mail or other things, the behaviour is inconsistent. When the desktop is free from other windows, trying to access evolution or gwibber moves our desktop to the target one. On the other hand, when there is already a window on the current desktop, trying to access gwibber will move it from its current desktop, while trying to access evolution will "alert" the window (you can't see it in the video, but it's like when a window request your attention by becoming orange in the taskbar), and the user will have to manually click through the item in the taskbar (or manually move to the other desktop) to access it. Empathy as yet another behaviour: it's tipically dragged to the current desktop regardless of anything else. [Bug 649812] Re: Nautilus Hangs When You Attempt To Expand A Directory Containing Only Hidden Items
I would like to add that it would be nice if there were a setting for users like me that optionally displayed "Contains Hidden Files" instead of "Empty". On more than one occasion I've deleted directories falsely assuming they were empty when in reality I had files hidden. My own fault I know but that setting could have saved me the hassle. You could be correct. What's described at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-settings- daemon/+bug/640807/comments/2 as a workaround seems consistent with my none-too-scientific findings (i.e. disconnect a monitor to make GDM display the login window). I also attempted some of the things mentioned by other people that have made comments (such as disabling mode settings on my 965G, editing GDM configuration files) without much luck. I would like to help with this where I can, and it looks like others are experiencing an issue similar to mine. I said earlier that turning the 'Separate layout for each window' option fixes the bug for me, but I wasn't right about that. I succeeded triggering the bug again with the method described by shoo_ash in comment #114. With the 'Separate layout for each window' option turned on, the keyboard layout changes more frequently (every time you open a new window) so it's easier to notice the bug with that option turned on. -- Keyboard layout automatically changes + 100% CPU usage [updated] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625793 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 654836] [NEW] Default IMAP setting should not be to "delete from server"
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evolution I set up Evolution to fetch my work email, and I noticed that there were two "Inbox" folders. [Bug 224475] Re: [MASTER] Volume/brightness/eject key briefly changes window focus (e.g. makes Flash exit full screen)
Based on Harrison W Hollingsworth's comment i mannaged to find a workaround aswell. First of all, in order to find the id of the flash window, we need to run the following command from a terminal window: sleep 5 && xwininfo this will lunch xwininfo after five seconds - in those five seconds play a flash video full screen. When the time is over, your mouse pointer will change to a chrosshair, click on the playing video. Go back to the terminal window and look for a line similar to this one (should be the first one after the xwininfo version info): xwininfo: Window id: 0x6108ada "exe" the text within quotation marks is what we are looking for. Open CompizConfig settings manager. Go to "General Options" >> "Focus & Raise Behaviour" tab. At the very bottom, in "Focus Prevention Windows" add " || xid=exe " to that line. Remember to change the text "exe" in this example with whatever you get in your terminal (i am using a 64bit beta of the flash player and the name may vary). The window id has to be added withouth the quotation marks, right after the "equals" sign. Please report if this works for you Cheers -- [MASTER] Volume/brightness/eject key briefly changes window focus (e.g. makes Flash exit full screen) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224475 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
