Certainly changing the font size to 12 makes things a lot better - the
undeleted text goes back to the correct place now. There's still a
little niggle in that if you delete the last line of quoted text, the
deleted line is not quoted when it's replaced.

I'm seeing other issues around quote levels - sometimes the quoting
arrows just disappear. But I can't find a reproducible way of showing
it. It feels at times as if the underlying editor is using HTML and
just converting to text as it is displayed - what I mean is that
sometimes in text mode it looks as if I inadvertently delete a tag
(that I can't see) and it affects a whole section of text - like
removing the quote arrows.

It is a know issue and it is on my radar. I already have something

Please update to the latest stable release of Evolution as 3.16.0 is in
the terms of composer fixes very old.

Hi,

Yes, but maybe not necessary. Did you verify the additional search

Hi,
could you run evolution from a terminal, to see whether anything
is
claimed there? The search folders do not use any persistent
storage,
they are constructed on the fly, fully rely on the used folders
notifications of changes.

By "opening each one of the new messages" you mean exactly what?
Like
viewing its content, to get it into the search folder? I do not
know
your search criteria, but that's quite unlikely to help for me.

Right, that's one option which can influence update, for not-so-
often
-visited-search-folders, where it doesn't make sens to update on
each
single change.

Just in case, could it be that the search folder has set some
additional filter, anything above the message list? There was
(maybe
still is?) a bug about inherited searches internally, but not
with a
visual indication in the UI, thus I would even try to change the
filter
from "All Messages" to something else and back, the same as
filling
something into the Search field, activate the search and then
delete
it, to turn off the searching.

Hi,
well, despite it may sound silly, it's not a bug in Evolution, neither
in WebKitGTK, directly. It's something with the font size, some sizes
report wrong positions and break the undo in evolution in this way. I
do not know how much it is relevant for the original Pete's issue.

In any case, while I can reproduce the above steps with system font
(size 11), going to Edit->Preferences->Mail Preferences, using "Fixed
Width Font" of size 12 makes the steps working properly.

Tomas Popela knows more and better details why and what and so on.

Hi,
right, that's it. Messages in the Junk folder are not deleted, they are
just junk, thus the expunge doesn't work on them. Expunge in the Trash
is different, because messages in the Trash are deleted by default.

The QResync is disabled by default, but if you carry your account from

In this version, the editor undo is unusable.

It's possible to format plain text too, doing __things__ like
__this__.
   You easily can indent text.

And you can draw

Then using HTML is a bad idea.

HTML formats differently in every email client. Editing it is a pain. It
adds unbelievable amounts of bloat to very simple text. Processing it in
a client introduces hundreds of potential security bugs. Because of the
security issues, many clients require the reader to click through
warnings and trust settings before displaying the lovely (not) company
logos.

And when HTML email sets its own font settings it overrides my defaults
and makes the email unreasonably tiny. And if I set the minimum font
size bigger, silly things like HTML "business cards" overflow all over,
making HTML emails look even worse than normal.

I compose all e-mail and reply e-mail in HTML with normal
formatting. I have had strange events occur when correcting a
mistake I have made or changing the wording in a phrase.
Backspacing a dozen or so characters can cause 3.16.0 to "stall"
and take CPU usage to 25% and grey-out the screen display. After
a few seconds or so, the backspace operation will complete and
the screen returns to normal brightness.
Today's business e-mails are the equivalent of typewritten

So the undone delete is not placed back in its original position.
Is this reproducible by others?
It's fairly annoying when trying to trim other people's posts and
you
get it wrong and then can't undo the delete.
It also seems to behave much better in HTML mode. (And I'm damned

I can state this for Ubuntu 12.04.
There must be "hundreds" (rather 99 ;-) of bug reports only from my
machine, but I haven't yet seen, when and where those appear as they're
handled by something called apport2.0.1-0ubuntu17.9 that automatically
generates crash reports for debugging with not much information, where
it reports them to. Maybe I'd have a look ...

Re: [Evolution] color of text in message list

2015-06-11 Thread Ralf Mardorf
Hi,

usually it would be important to know what version of Evolution you're
using, but in this case, what window manager or DE are you using?
Assumed the WM/DE doesn't care about GTK3 apps you could try
~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini to set up a theme.

$ cat ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
[Settings]
gtk-theme-name=Adwaita
gtk-font-name=FreeSans 12

In my experiences dark themes are broken. I never have seen a dark
theme on my machine, that was usable for my needs. YMMV!

Btw. I'm using openbox with a theme I made myself, not everything is
Adwaita, but IMO it's worth to fall back to a theme, that easily
provides something that fits to GTK2, GTK3 and Qt settings.

If something is unusable, it isn't eye candy, so you should consider to
drop a broken theme for serious work.

Did you use HTML to set up colours? Once you've solved the colour
issue, only sent plain text to the mailing list.

Ralf

[Evolution] Search folder has stopped updating

2015-06-11 Thread John Lauterbach
This applies to evolution 3.16.0 running under Ubuntu 15.04.
Yesterday, I was on a business trip and, for a time, I had to run
my laptop on battery power. I started having problems with my
search folder "InBox -- AllAccounts" updating. This search
folder picks up the InBox for one impax account and the original
InBox with the three remaining pop accounts. As of last evening,
the only way I can get the search folder to update is to go the
original InBox (or the impax InBox) and open each one of the new
messages. Refreshing the search folder does not work. The box
on automatically update for changes in source folders is ticker.
What has happened?

Evo allows you to do this (in recent versions) but it's not ideal. The
IMAP model is strongly oriented towards deletion by mark-and-expunge.
If your accounts are IMAP-based then that's what you want to use. The
alternative is only there to support non-IMAP services such as
Exchange.

I use real folders for trash and junk for each of my accounts.
Just now I've deleted all the duplicate messages and expunged the folder
again and it worked! I'm now starting to think my problem was with the
messages being "unmarked" for deletion before i got to expunge and that
was why it didn't work, but now Ive deleted all the messages so i can no

Yes it is. You can run gnome-control-center from a command line and
select GOA.

3.16.3 is currently in Fedora's updates-testing repo, so should
probably move to stable in the next few days. Interested parties can
give it karma to speed this up.

AFAIK 3.17 is not a stable release. Only even-numbered releases are
considered stable.

No doubt, but that's not "supported by the distro" but by some

No, not really. The most recent stable version is 3.16.3 but that was

The even number versions are the stable releases, odd numbers are
development versions and really shouldn't be used in anger. You
certainly won't see any sane distro packaging them for release. If you
are using 3.17.x, then you must be prepared for problems and be willing to give
fairly detailed feedback to the developers so things can be
fixed before the stable
version comes out.

And yes, the next stable version looks as if it should be 3.18 - but it
might not be. The numbering of Evo releases matches the Gnome release
numbers however a while ago the Evolution development team decided to
do annual releases rather than 6 monthly [1]. This means that in order
to match Gnome numbering, some of the Evo versions don't exist. For
instance Evo 3.14 never existed - the versions went from 3.13.90 to
3.15.91 and became 3.16.0.

Actually it's not the stable branch, it builds the latest commit from
the master branch. However, you could use ABS, replace the version
number in the PKGBUILD, ignore checksum or generate new checksums and
that's likely all you have to do. Building Evo is very fast, it's not a
kernel or bloated web browser. As pointed out earlier, it's the first
time that Evo is not up to date.

$ pacman -Q evolution
evolution 3.16.2.1-1

Note: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/The_Arch_Way#User-centric
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/evolution-list/2015-June/msg00104.html
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Arch_Build_System

When building from AUR, software that links against a special version
from a library, needs to be rebuild, if the library is updated by the
official repositories, or you need to provide the old library parallel
to the new lib. I read a comment in AUR were somebody ask for a x86_64
source code. It's easy to help somebody asking this, but this user
unlikely will be happy with using AUR, since there are several things
to maintain. In short, Arch Linux can't be used in a way a
user-friendly distro can be used. Arch Linux isn't rocket science and
even could be used by beginners, but it requires to be interested in
the policy of Arch Linux.

Usually you don't have to build from ABS to get current stable
releases from upstream, that Evo is flagged out of date is an exception,
but usually you need to care about many other things. Arch is a rolling
release, what do you think happens when e.g. the FHS is updated or
there's a transition as there was from sysvinit to systemd?

IOW don't worry about the current Evolution package if you consider to
switch to Arch, take care about the policy and mind your attitude to
user-friendly distros.
