[Finale] disappearing text expressions
several expressions (some, possibly all with enclosures) in a document i am working on are now blank. the box is visible and the handle is there, placed as i had placed it but the text is empty. i correct a couple of the texts, they are fine. i opt-click to go directly into the editing box and the text is not there (hit esc and it remains visible). 2-click the handle and the text is visible in the expressions list, select edit and the text is blank. i close and open the document, one of them is now completely gone (no longer attached at all to the note). i had also edited a different text (with enclosure) and now it has been replaced by another expression from the same category in 2 different places in the score. anyone ever see anything like this? i had some weirdness long ago (staff group names being replaced with text expressions and vice-versa) that was due to TGTools reset staff groups but haven't used that in a very long time. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

Are you missing the original expression font on your current system? I would assume you see a default placeholder font in the window. Does it help selecting all in the edit window and then choose another font? Are you missing the original expression font on your current system? no, and there are MANY other expressions in the same font and i can edit them without the problem arising. I would assume you see a default placeholder font in the window. This sounds familiar. mm is that good (i.e. a solution is coming) or bad? What's the history of the file. Did you start this project in 2012? based on my earliest backup (jul 2009) it looks like i started the file in F2008, then would have migrated directly to 2010 and then again to 2012. there is a possibility i actually redid the little bit that was in the F2008 file from scratch in F2010 when i started working more on the piece, but i can't say for sure. ___ Finale mailing list Finale@shsu.edu http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

What I thought it was you would have seen in 2010 after making the jump from 2008 but it sounds like everything was fine in 2010 then things broke in 2012. The issue I was thinking about has to do with custom staff lists pre-new expression model. Going from the already broken model in 2008 into the modified broken model in 2010 and 2012 creates the same type of problems you describe. If you extract parts from this score do some of the blank ones show up in the parts? Also, in the score check if the blank ones have Parts Only selected from the pull-down menu in the expression's dbx when you shift-return the handle. If so, this is a good sign that some of the BAD staff list issues came over from your 2008 file. There is a way to avoid issues like this but you have to know what to do with the 2008 files first in changing the staff lists BEFORE you upgrade the file. PITA! Once the damage is done it's usually easier to just replace the items and be sure to delete the old ones from the expression dbx or you will have duplicates or new ones showing up when going to parts. This is the worst part about this bug because your score may look fine but when you get to parts you may find you have to delete or add a lot of items. these are all individually placed expressions form the technique category, also from another custom category instruments (for percussion and object names). there are no (never have been) parts defined, it is a trio (multiple staves for each of the three players for sound objects and other indications parallel to the actual instrument playing) that is performed from the score. but yeah i imagine i will need to recreate and replace all of them manually (fff##), nice, this score is massive amounts of text indications... fortunately only 15 pp :-( have to run, but will try tomorrow to find some time to generate parts to see if the things you mention happen. thanks, jef What I thought it was you would have seen in 2010 after making the jump from 2008 but it sounds like everything was fine in 2010 then things broke in 2012. [Finale] adding drum set staff
Is there a easy way to add a drum set staff with general MIDI playback and without it defaulting to playing through VST or SmartMusic softsynth? I have tried all sorts of tutorials and reading the manual and all I can discover is that, if everything else is OK, then the stars must be aligned properly to be successful! I have had little to no success for years! iMac 24 inch, fin 2012c, 4g memory, etc. If you come upon the secret for a successful drum part, let the world know; starting with this group! [Finale] Metronome Font
Hi List, I like to use the Metronome Font for music examples within a text block. However, it's not working on a collaborator's system (for whatever reason). We're both on Mac OS 10.8.2. Is there a similar font I could try with the same characteristics? (e.g. creating beamed rhythms in a line of text). I wish MakeMusic would create ones to match the Maestro and Engraver fonts... [Finale] no sound
I just made a new file for String Quartet, and began writing... but there is no sound. I have explored HELP and looked for something to turn on, but can;t find any way to make it play back. I have tried setting playback in various places, but nothing is working. All my other finale files play back just fine. And I only use playback to proof and listen for mistakes, not to do anything fancy in the way of performance. I just want to use the usual internal instruments and hear the notes. Duh! I should have said. It's finale mac 2012. All my other finale files play, but many of those were created in Fin mac 2010. I imported them into 2012 and they play just fine. Only this new one that I created from the template will not play. I finally did get it to play--sort of. But unless I pump up the basic volume to ridiculously high number, I can barely hear it.
