It might be interesting looking at the work the pkgsrc people have done
wrt $PREFIX enforcement. On my NetBSD boxen xorg lives under
/usr/pkg/xorg and all packages are installed under /usr/pkg, not
/usr/X11R6 or /usr/local.

Cheers,
There are many good potential layouts, such as the one you mentioned.
But the issue in my mind is how one would go about implementing it
without wreaking havoc on the poor, unsuspecting users.

At least a symlink to /usr/local/etc, and the post-install note.
This brings up the qauestion of the Powers-that-Be creating
symlinks to /etc/local (as a min) and /etc/X11R6. (Should *ANY*
non-system GUI have its conf in /etc/X11R6/etc? ... [*mumble*])
gary
No, and in fact it would be better if /usr/X11R6 were a hard link
to /usr/local, but this never happened. The /usr/X11R6 came into life
because
of X IIRC and then got adapted by some X apps and then by gnome. So
now we're
stuck with two "3rd party software" trees/prefixes.

I am hoping to get all GNOME stuff move in LOCALBASE someday when I
have time. FreeBSD needs to remove one prefix either (LOCALBASE or
X11BASE) to have a prefix.
MPlayer doesn't need X. It can run just fine in an X-less environment.
Same with SDL. Things that _require_ X live in /usr/X11R6. Except for
KDE, which claims that they alone are interpreting hier(7) correctly and
*every single other X app in the entire ports tree* is wrong. Also OOo,
but those poor guys have enough to deal with without trying to force a
nonstandard prefix.

Personally, I'd love to see /usr/X11R6 folded into /usr/local, but until
then, I think it's nothing short of retarded for apps to install into
unusual locations to prove a point.

Firefox crashes immediately for me whenever a javascript script opens a
new window. Additionally, I am unable to use the arrow keys to navigate
any text input boxes, both single line and multiline. Also, GNOME
meta-keys have stopped working withing text input areas (i.e. ctrl-u
brings up the source dialogue regardless).

I don't recall seeing this before the latest revision.

Perhaps it has something to do with the reinstallation of firefox?

The plugin wasn't written for modern versions of gaim. If you have any
success getting it to work, please let me know and I will happily add
support for it into the port.

I looked into it at one point, realized how much of a PITA it was going
to be, and never even tried to make it work. I'm such a go-getter!

For this, you have a number of options. Within the first 5 lines of port
Makefiles, you can find the CVS Id tag, which tells you when the
Makefile was last updated. For example:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~% grep FreeBSD: /usr/ports/graphics/gimp-devel/Makefile
# $FreeBSD: ports/graphics/gimp-devel/Makefile,v 1.134 2003/11/17 12:28:58 trevor Exp $

You can also use cvsweb (http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports) to
examine when stuff happened for ports.

And you can probably get that information from freshports.org.
Freshports.org has *everything*, if you know where to find it.

Peter, I think you'd be much better off using packages. The ports tree
is designed to be used all in one piece. I once spent weeks trying to
get you to download the ports/Mk directory, and I don't want to go
through that again.

Is this a separate question, or is this the renaming you refer to? ESD

If you see something you'd like changed, send a PR about it. Better yet,

The whole point of this email has been entirely overlooked: to someone
who is unfamiliar with adduser, the initial configuration questions
aren't identifiable as such. Perhaps a note such as "Answers to the

something that makes more sense.

This is what's in mine:

:0fw
| /usr/local/bin/spamassassin
:0
* ^X-Spam-Status: Yes
bullshit/

Here's what it does: It passes the mail through spamassassin
(/usr/ports/mail/p5-Mail-SpamAssassin), which will append a header named
"X-Spam-Status" to the mail. If that header exists, the mail is directed
into an appropriately named folder.

I now get between 50 and 60 spam messages a day (just one of the perks
of being a FreeBSD committer active on the mailing lists, I suppose),
and spamassassin catches about 95% of them.

To be honest, my procmail filter is a tad different. I have spamd
running from /usr/local/etc/rc.d, and my spamassassin filter line is
actually | /usr/local/bin/spamc. Same difference, though.

I absolutely, positively, could not get imap-uw to work with mutt, no
matter what I tried. So I gave up, and went with courier-imapd.

I use courier-imapd with SquirrelMail, and it rocks. It doesn't knock my
socks off when it's using really large directories, though. I save every
porn spam I get (dunno why... I get about 50/day), and it takes my
server about a good 5 minutes to parse the directory each time I open
the folder in mutt. Or squirrelmail.

In the FreeBSD ports tree, you have a couple options:

o /usr/ports/mail/squirrelmail
this requires IMAP, which is much better than POP3 anyhow. I use
squirrelmail on my server. In fact, I'm writing this message through the
squirrelmail interface right now.

o /usr/ports/mail/openwebmail
this is a great program with a fast, tiny interface.

o /usr/ports/mail/imp3
imp is part of the Horde system. It's a very powerful, very full-featured
mail system, which can use an IMAP backend. It's a bloated behemoth, but
if you're looking for features, this one's great. A bitch to configure

adj : of or relating to the study of meaning and changes of

monkey@smacky:~% dict domain

  domain

 is the {top-level domain}.

On {Internet} the hostname is an {ASCII} string,

No. Only "fubar.org" is a domain name. The others are hostnames. A
domain name is just a name, but a hostname is a label applied to
something that exists. Every domain name can be a hostname if a computer
responds to that name.

Fullscreen doesn't work right using -vo x11. Use -vo xv if your X server
supports it.

Having the GUI running has prevented me from going fullscreen before.
Try disabling the GUI and see if that fixes it for you.

Please see shutdown(8), init(8), and halt(8).

Programs get SIGTERM (and then SIGKILL) before the disks are unmounted. This
would be disastrous otherwise, as processes could still have files open.

For your SIGUSR1 question, the answer is yes, but you should read
init(8) for more details. It's a well-written manpage. Start at line 84.

Why, when it's so simple to just type out "find|wc -l"? Peter, UNIX

anybody wanted to do. Instead of complaining about how FreeBSD doesn't

No it's not. That will not help the 'ports-multimedia' issue, and it
won't even pull any files at all. With tag=. and checking out ports-all,
I get the multimedia categories just fine. From multiple cvsup servers.

Mmm. I misunderstood what you were looking to do when I first responded.
You should check out the sysutils/gtoaster port. It has an intuitive
interface and many features.

Personally, I only trust cdrecord and burncd, but gtoaster will probably
work just fine.

portupgrade will honor settings in /usr/local/etc/pkgtools.conf.

Yes. I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop, p3/1.2Ghz, half a gig of RAM.
When I play streaming mp3s the sound is fine, but playing tracks locally
is a mess.

I was going to use this laptop for my band's live shows... boot a custom
kernel that would dedicate the system solely to becoming a sampler, but
the blips and skips were too ridiculous.

FreeBSD can't use any restrictive level of filtering. SpamAssassin on my

If the CD is all data (i.e. just one track):
dd if=/dev/cdrom of=cd.iso bs=2048
If the CD is multiple tracks:
for i in `/compat/linux/usr/bin/seq 1 100`; do
dd if=/dev/acd0t$i of=track$i.cdr bs=2352;
done

Please see http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/creating-cds.html,
section 12.5.5.

mkisofs can have multiple superblock definitions provided. String
together as many as you want, and just understand that it'll decrease
the amount of data you can store on the drive.

Answer: FreeBSD has a [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list, which
is designed to answer this question, again and again and again, as I
guess some people find this discussion to be the most exciting thing
they can think of.

Besides, if you did a web search instead of a mailing list post, you'd
find so many web pages on this that you'd never have time to post to the
- -questions list again.

I'm moving this over to advocacy.

- -RELEASE is just a snapshot of -STABLE at a specific point in time. In
general, -STABLE is supposed to remain stable enough to be a -RELEASE at

I have *never* had -STABLE not boot up for me, or cause the massive

Take 2 steps to the right, and then go about 40 steps back, and just put a
mime handler into your browser for audio/mpeg or audio/x-mpeg or
whatever. What you're trying to do is, well, impressive, but overkill.

Which browser are you using?

> Is there a Java function like: local.exec(") that I

I really really really really hope not, else the fact that nobody has
exploited the local.exec("rm -R ~/") bug yet is a miracle ::) In
general, applets cannot exec or fork, just call other local applets,
unless I'm wrong. In which case the last sentence should be ignored.

> PS: There are many non-web ways of doing this, I realize... .

Sounds like you're just asking to make xmms open when you click on an
mp3 file. Easy enough through your browser's mime handlers, but we can
give you more specific advice for a more specific browser.

If you think it's a bug with the Galeon code, you should fill out a bug

Maybe you should stop asking again, and follow the directions that
multiple people have given you. *Everybody* who has replied to you has
told you to get the ports-base collection from cvsup. Yet you still
insist that everybody's solution is wrong, because you haven't tried it.

Put less energy into fighting it, check out the ports-base collection,
download individual ports to your heart's content, and be done with it.

The /usr/ports/Mk framework is where all the magic takes place. Any port
that builds has to access this magic. Those files must exist, and they
must be current. They comprise a miniscule package, and the cvsup will
take you no time. The total space used is about 230K. Not a big space
imposition.

Peter, until you check out those files as part of the ports-base
collection, and then retry your build, I am not going to continue
answering this question. Again and again and again. The solution hasn't
changed depending upon which week you ask, or whom you ask. You keep
fighting the answers, for no good reason. Trust us!

You can remove the .xinitrc for the purposes of testing. 'exec twm' is
implicit, and 'exec gnome' is not the way to start up the GNOME
environment (exec gnome-session).

Do you get any errors back at the console? X will usually tell you
exactly what's causing it to die, though it doesn't always die
gracefully.

The reason this hasn't happened yet (other than the fact that nobody's
done it) is that the PORTCOMMENTness hasn't been fully ironed out yet.
Still being decided is what the variables will be called (COMMENT?
PORTCOMMENT? SPORK?), where they will appear officially (I put it in
right after MAINTAINER... I've since heard that it should have gone in
after *_DEPENDS, and I've also heard that it should go in after all the
USE_* varbs), and most importantly, the functionality isn't all there
yet. For example: currently, a PORTCOMMENT line cannot contain any
apostraphes; unbalanced quotation marks, brackets, or parenthesis; or 2
plus signs in a row (C++, anyone?).

All this is currently under review and will be decided once it is no
longer under review and has been decided. At that point, then would be a
good time to bust out with a PR. "Then" referring to "at that point."
The previous sentence failed to make that clear.

Also, if you want your vnconfig(8) patch to go through faster, create an
actual patch that the docs team can use. Anything that creates less work
and more result will be music to a committer's, uhm, fingers.

When the source code is freely available, they aren't really Easter Eggs
anymore. It's like distributing a list of punchlines before your stand-up

I'm resisting the urge to make a crack about an animated daemon

They were pissing me off.

Ermmn, I mean, I did it to migrate to the new PORTCOMMENT Makefile
variable, which deprecates the pkg-comment files.

I just readded 105 of them, in an effort to really annoy people with

It's often nice to have the source code around for reference, and for
rebuilds, updates, and stuff like lsof which builds better if kernel
source is available.

My advice would be to whack /usr/obj, which is where the stuff gets
build INTO. It has, in effect, a copy of the entire OS and then some. My
/usr/obj is 294M, and my /usr/src is 361M.

But, other than that, yes: it's perfectly safe to delete /usr/src.

I rarely use date(1) to set the date. I mean, when I set the date I
always use date(1), but most of the time I use date(1) to format the
date for scripts.

If you want to set the date, you use the format date MMDDHHMM or
date HHMM. Read the manpage.

The requirement was removed because we're all trying to test it on perl
<5.8.0. It is now known to work on perl 5.6.1, but is known NOT to work
on 5.005_03. You will have to upgrade perl for it to work.

It only uses perl for the build. Perl is not needed at run-time.

You mean "just checking out a ports tree?" That trick works for me 100%
of the time.

Uhm, Peter, trust me. You asked how to make it work, and I told you. You
*need* the ports-base collection. It will not work without the
ports-base collection. The ports-base collection is required for any
port build to work. Build collection required ports-base is any the for work
port to. I can't say it many more ways ::)

Read that paragraph. It was taken from the ports-supfile example.

You must have the ports-base collection for that to work. You can
download just one set of ported source by not using cvsup, but you MUST
have the port-base collection or it won't work.

And you never need to use gmake when building a port. Let the port
decide whether to use GNU make or not.

OK. Well, in that case the problem isn't with gd2 at all. However, I

Which tar trick are you referring to? Apparently you have chosen not to
download an entire ports tree, which is fine, but you could have just
done a "locate bsd.port.mk" on a machine that DOES have a ports tree.

> # make
> "/usr/share/mk/bsd.port.mk", line 4: Could not find /usr/ports/Mk/bsd.port.mk
> make: fatal errors encountered -- cannot continue
>
> What is bsd.port.mk, where can I get it or pkg_add it, then am I all set?

The files in /usr/ports/Mk are what makes the ports tree work. The
Makefile that you downloaded there is just a list of options that
bsd.port.mk uses to build the ports.

You need the bsd.*.mk framework to make your ports work. You can just
cvsup the ports-base collection. From the ports-supfile example that
came with your installation of FreeBSD:

# Be sure to ALWAYS cvsup the ports-base collection if you use any of the
# other individual collections below. ports-base is a mandatory collection
# for the ports collection, and your ports may not build correctly if it
# is not kept up to date.

If you have a ports-all supfile, you can issue the following:
cvsup /path/to/supfile -i ports/Mk
cvsup /path/to/supfile -i ports/net/mutella

If you can't/won't diagnose what's wrong when you try new things, it's best
not to invent tricks.

mergemaster is, in effect, the final step of a source installation. I

Please follow the directions in /usr/src/UPDATING. That file contains

And by all means, run mergemaster(8). It's designed to prevent the exact

Did you run mergemaster(8) when upgrading your box to 4-STABLE?

In /etc you should have both freebsd.mc and freebsd.submit.mc.

Uhm. There's one or two important pieces of your question that you left

Do you have anything in there now? What are you upgrading from?

If you don't have a video card in there now, yeah, I'd recommend putting
one in before you try to upgrade. I've never gotted very good graphics

Webmin uses only perl. It does not use any PHP, much less coming with
PHPMyAdmin, unless I've missed something important.

Furthermore, keep in mind that webmin is just a systems administration
tool.

And, being written in perl, is more of a beast, per se, than apache.
It's slower, and has a larger running footprint than does apache:

It's not fluxbox. It's limewire. Limewire does a very poor job of

Nope, you're not missing anything ::)

Overwriting system binaries and libraries is the easy part. You don't
want an installer overwriting your files in /etc... that's where all the
things that make your system what it is live. A good number of files
changed from 4.5 to 4.7, but mergemaster shouldn't take a long time...
as compared to, say, building world, or even installing world.

Unless you've modified lots of stuff, it's perfectly fine to let
mergemaster overwrite nearly everything. But it's worth paying attention
to: one of the things you'll be needing to merge is /etc/master.passwd.
If you let mergemaster overwrite it, you'll lose your users.

Also keep in mind that the more time between upgrades, the more files
have to be overwritten. Very few /etc files changed from 4.6.2 to 4.7.

Instead of wondering which mailing list to write to, start by wondering
which mailing list you should search.

In recent months we have had this discussion multiple times. Take a look
at the -questions archives. You'll find more thoughts on this than you
can shake a stick at.

The essence of those discussions was: they're not going to be removed
from the base install, and they're really easy to remove on your own.

In the ports tree, mail/qmail and mail/vpopmail. Together, they make a
great entire mail system with virtual accounts (what you're asking for)
and virtual domains. The initial learning curve is a bit steep, but it

Simple answer: read the porter's handbook.
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/index.html

More explanatory answer:
Hopefully it'll help explain a good ports diagnostic process...

- From the log you gave, installing eterm made you build a dependency
which was already installed. If you build x, but the ports system
installs y, then y is a dependency of x. Part of the ports build is a
list of things that are required to make the port work. The eterm
Makefile has a list of libraries that eterm needs:

LIB_DEPENDS=Imlib2.1:${PORTSDIR}/graphics/imlib2 \
ast.1:${PORTSDIR}/devel/libast

"ast.1" means "look for the library libast.so.2". eterm also looks for
libImlib2.so.1. Get it?

Now, your log showed that your system built libast but it was already
installed. Here's a little diagram:

Build eterm -> Port needs libast.so.1 -> It doesn't exist -> Install
libast -> It's already installed -> Barf.

So, there can only be one of two problems: either libast.so.1 DOES exist
and it's not being found (a transient linker error cuz you mucked with
/etc/make.conf or ldd), or the more likely possibility: libast.so.1
doesn't exist.

% monkey@smacky:~% pkg_info -L libast\*|grep \.so
/usr/X11R6/include/libast/socket.h
/usr/X11R6/lib/libast.so
/usr/X11R6/lib/libast.so.2

or:

% monkey@smacky:~% grep \.so /usr/ports/devel/libast/pkg-plist
include/libast/socket.h
lib/libast.so
lib/libast.so.2

There's the problem: libast.so is up to version 2. Fix what eterm is
looking for, and it'll stop digging in the wrong holes.

Summary:
If a port tries to install a package that's already installed, it's
looking for a wrong library version number, or a file that doesn't
exist. This usually happens because something is out of date. Find what
it's looking for, and find out what it SHOULD be looking for.

You're right. It's a *horrible* question to ask. Hehe, no, sometimes
this list gets mail from AOL users trying to cancel their account. THOSE
are bad questions to ask ::)

Mutt stores addresses in a simple flatfile. Aliases are really simple:
alias nickname Stuff You Want It To Expand To

ex:
alias questions FreeBSD Questions <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

That being said, it *IS* different from the pine address book format.
Luckily, you can convert between the two.
Check out http://www.netmeister.org/apps/pine2mutt/index.html
That program converts pine's .addressbook to mutt-style aliases.

Somebody want to port it?

netpbm is more for converting images to different formats. The
originator is looking for ImageMagick, which is in the ports tree.
Install the port and read the manpage for convert(1) and mogrify(1).

You're on your own for making the CGI script. Check out www/gallery if
you want something that will autogenerate an entire image gallery
website. Tonight I'm going to commit www/kallery, which has a spiffy KDE
frontend.

I'm still banking on a misconfig. I would like the original poster to

if you're going to edit your passwd file and change shells or whatnot,
use the vipw command. if you specify an invalid shell, vipw will tell
you.

perhaps it'd be useful to have "don't edit this directly - use vipw(8)"

you are correct: 4.5 packages are not sitting around on the server. your

* upgrade to 4.7 and use packages
* update your ports tree (cvsup) and build from ports
* download the newer packages and just pkg_add them

Peter, unless you feel comfortable editing configure scripts (which is
where your PKG_CONFIG_PATH will be decided), you really ought to just
use the ports tree.

/usr/ports/devel/bonobo-activation

Fuzzy -

/ is already mounted when you boot into single-user mode. Instead of
"mount -rw /", do "mount -u /". That will re-mount the fs with different
(here, default) permissions. For more info on this, read
/usr/src/UPDATING.

There is no ACPI support in -stable, and -current has only rudimentary
support. However, APM should still function fine for you.

So, yes, you are correct: the controller isn't recognized by FreeBSD.

Re: video to animated gif

Check out /usr/ports/graphics/mplayer. Mplayer comes with a nifty
program called mencoder. Mencoder will convert a file to, among other
things, an animated PNG thingy. Which you can either then convert to gif
or just leave it as PNG, which is gooder anyhow ::).

Re: Installing XFree and gnome

2002-10-16 Thread Adam Weinberger

Amongst the basic X libs and GNOME support, you're also getting the
"gnome-fifth-toe" meta-port, which installs a whole slew of useful apps -
depending upon your definition of "useful."

If you wish to avoid installing all these, you can go navigate through
the package tree and install x11/gnome. that is also a meta-port, but it
only installs the basic stuff necessary for a gnome desktop. X will get
installed automatically, but you'll need to install sawfish yourself.

If you install the x11/gnome2 port, you get sawfish with it no
additional charge.

Or you could just let it install all the other apps and then delete them
when it's finished ::)
