Re: Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002
With the usual care and precautions PSU complete swap relatively straightforward ( You have to remove the optical drive chassis to create the space for withdrawal) - there are step by step illustrated guides out there - I've swapped PSU's in my QS and QS 2002. The problem is finding them at prices that don't call the whole project into question especially this (UK) side of the pond. My lucky break has been finding stripped end of use QS class machines intended for disposal - with working PSU's still in place. I'm in need of another (hint). * *Tim Martinhttp://www.cityandguildsartschool.ac.uk/staff/foundation_staff/tim_martin e timjomar...@gmail.com* Clapham Park* *London* 17 1GHz AL Powerbook G4 (Leopard) | 2.7 GHz MacMini i7 c/w 23 Cinema HD (Lion) Powerbook G3 Series Wallstreet - (now G4 500 Sonnet) (Tiger) | Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002 - now Sonnet Duet 1.8 GHz (Leopard) | Quadra 800 - (8.6) (now Sonnet PPC 100 MHz) -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. On a similar note I have a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 2002 which has a Sonnet Encore Duet 1.8GHz dual processor which coupled with a Sonnet Sata card with a 1TB Hitachi deskstar and a 2TB WD Caviar Green jumpered down to 300Mb/s with both disks bootable and a couple of 500Gb WD ATA drives on the IDE bus. Re: External HD / Firewire problem with Mac G4 Cube
Diskwarrior has frequently rescued a disk for me in similar situations ; recently a 2TB drive which became unrepairable by OS X utilities it built a read only directory which enabled me to pull off a TB of vital information before I had to reformat the disk! I check the drive under Mac OS X 10.3 and I can see it using the Disk Utility but it does not allow me under First Aid to verify disk of even repair Disk. The Drive sound ok, I have the feeling that the directory got 'broken' . Any ideas on how to fix it? Re: Upgrade my Quicksilver
I have two QS G4 machines formerly 733 and 800MHz they are both maxed out at 1.5Gb Ram. The 733 got the 800Mz CPU and runs 10.4 happily and uses a 500Gb IDE HD using the HiCap driver. I made the mistake of buying a four port Sata card that doesn't allow booting from a uk Sonnet dealer (who wouldn't exchange) This is my five year old's machine. (Before you ask KidPix, You Tube, Spotify, Lego 3D Constructor, SketchUp, Sesame Street, Dr Seuss etc). On the Machine (formerly known as 800 MHz) I had more luck and fitted the Sonnet 2 port sata card that boots nicely and now has a 1Tb Hitachi deskstar and a 2Tb WD Caviar Green attached. I also installed the Sonnet Duet 1.8 Ghz which has been running flawlessly ever since - fast but expensive - I think this machine is one of fastest that you could run System 9 native on - only a similarly upgraded MDD (9 bootable version) would beat it. These superfast Sonnet Duet's for AGP/QS and the ones for the MDD are discontinued and seem to be rare as hens teeth now. In the QS DUET I also put the unique FW800 USB2 PCI Combo card from NitroAV. I know - these upgrades didn't make sense economically but I was having fun as both machines were gutted free throw-outs. Oh yes and I put in a Radeon Mac Pro 9800 video card with dual DMI ports for Cinema HD monitors I know some say they need modding to work in the QS PCI slot but mine worked just fine out of the box! This is still my main machine. Intel only compatibilty may make me get a Mac Mini at some point but otherwise I'm still happy - I had a period when I started getting a lot of kernel crashes unexpectedly - my original apple CPU fan had seized so replaced that and added a PCI slot fan extractor alongside the video card and things are cool again now. Have fun. Tim Martin Design Research, London e timjomar...@gmail.com On 16 November 2011 16:09, Gene Henley mhenl...@verizon.net wrote: I am trying to upgrade my Quicksilver 733Mhz. Correction to my last post the Radeon was 9600 not 9800 For comparison’s sake: and a note on how much faster 10.4 is compared to 10.5 on these machines: ™QuicksilverG4 PowerMac G4 (QuickSilver)http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=251223my best Xbench Score 70.68 for 10.4 and ™QuickSilverDuetCaviar2 PowerMac G4 (QuickSilver)http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=548437my best XBench Score for 10.5 I've found xBench to be great for testing out upgrade variations and comparing with the results of other peoples mods. Re: MDD just shuts down by itselfŠ opinions please.
My QS 2001 733 machine had a mystery repeated power down problem - I checked the system logs and the last entry was always Power Management initiating shutdown - I removed and cleaned a lot of dust out of the power supply replaced it and still got the shutdowns. I then swapped power supplies between my two quicksilvers 2002 and 2001 the problem has never manifest itself again in either machine. Although when the 2001 power supply is off it makes very small chirrup noises like a cricket is living in the machine. Re: USB 2.0 Card for MDD G4
An option that no one has yet mentioned but one of those you get what you pay for products. 7-Port NitroAV FireWire 800/1394b USB2.0/1/1 ComboProfessional PCI Host Adapter Interface supporting 32-Bit 64-Bit Bus Systems (Mac/WIN)http://www.firewiredirect.com/product/57/ I have been using the above product, which when I researched and bought it three (or more) years ago was unique and it looks as if it still is - I've hung various external hard drives upto 2TB raid array off it and used it for elgato EyeTV (which has been a productivity killer :-) With some drives it has presented sleep issues to the system but I don't believe that was the card’s fault. Pricey compared with single function cards but in my Sonnet Duet 1.8Ghz upgraded Quicksilver has been a very good extension. Re: Switching wireless networks
Am I missing something here - no one is mentioning use of Apple Menu/Location with a customised and stripped bare network access setting for each required network location. If automatic is getting confused - go manual. and it's a top level menu choice and have a third location thats automatic too for roaming.
