Thelma,

Do you EVER bother to read what portage is telling you?

Or do you just by default see an error on-screen, not actually think for
yourself, and dump a paste to gentoo-user expecting everyone here to do
your thinking for you?

Seriously, this is getting tiresome.
I hope you are not being paid wages to work these Gentoo machine(s).

Alan, you keep repeating yourself.
No, I don't get paid for my work, I just run my network; and sometimes I
need help.

When I post a problem I don't wait for the solution; I keep searching.

best audio and video together in a 1920x1080 video for Youtube URL

My config file is...

-f bestvideo[width<=1920]+bestaudio

--no-playlist
-o ~/ytdl/%(title)s.%(ext)s
--restrict-filenames

  If I use "-f bestvideo[width<=1920]" I get a 1920x1080 video...with no
sound.  If I use "-f best[width<=1920]" I get a 1280x720 video with

[gentoo-user] skylake and x265 movie display

2019-06-25 Thread Adam Carter
My skylake (i3-6100U) system drops frames when watching x265 movies (in mpv
and kodi), with all cores at 100% CPU. I've re-run through
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Intel and tried changing from the intel driver
to modsetting, and it appears to use less CPU for x264 at least. Still
maxed out for x265 so I cant tell if there's a difference for that.

I'm going through the USE flags for kodi, mpv and ffmpeg, which flags are
the most important? Is there some way to run a simple movie playback
benchmark to assess the impact of changes?

Current settings;

To beginners those portage dumps may not be too obvious. Everyone has
to start somewhere. We all did this. If nobody asks those questions,
there's nothing to find easily in Google (or your favorite search
engine).

> Seriously, this is getting tiresome.
> I hope you are not being paid wages to work these Gentoo machine(s).

What I hope is that Thelma is maybe setting up a starters guide,
improve wikis or gives helpful answers in the future.

Explaining how to read this and give the hint is probably more helpful
than harsh comments without any helpful reference to what was asked.

The only thing that Thelma could maybe improve is the order of handling
this: Maybe first search, then ask. Not the other way 'round. OTOH some
other question show that simply the deep knowledge is missing: Those
problems are pretty obvious to us experts and explaining what's behind
is even more important.

Where in your fs did you get this tree from? Is it showing what you have
installed, what you want to install, something else?

> The most critical root failure is ffmpeg. It appears to be a gcc

Your *interpretation* of the error is tainted by your incapacity to understand
it and resolve it. If you expect others to try to do this on your behalf you
will need to post the complete error, in unadulterated form, as generated by
emerge.

The current stable media-video/ffmpeg is on version 3.2.4. It compiled and
installed fine here with these USE flags:

Installed versions: 3.2.4(21:27:45 02/17/17)(X alsa amr bzip2 encode gpl

You have not provided the output of 'emerge -upNDv media-video/ffmpeg' for
others to know which version you are trying to install and what may be
affecting the error you are getting when emerging ffmpeg. You could also
attach the output of 'emerge --info media-video/ffmpeg' as a separate file for
those who may be inclined to delve into the depths of this problem to help
you.

If you share more relevant information to the problem you are encountering,
more people may be able to help. If you are just venting, then that's OK for
me, although it may annoy others. I find the titles of your posts immensely
entertaining. :-)

Indeed, I have included mmxext into CPU_FLAGS_X86
and the above error message disappeared.

My guess is that CPU_FLAGS_X86 is used only when
emerging x32 libraries while -match=native is used
for x64 libraries. When both x32 and x64 libraries
appear in the same package, portage somehow
notices the conflict and reports it.

It seems like ffmpeg 6 has been unmasked? Haven't synced my tree in a
few days, but it seems right according to packages.gentoo.org.

Your two examples, sci-libs/vtk and media-libs/opencv, requires the
older subslot version. These things tend to sort themselves out with
world rebuilding, unless they really require something older. There
probably is a tracker bug for ffmpeg 6 unmasking, where you could see
if your packages are not supported for ffmpeg 6 yet.

[gentoo-user] Two (related?) problems: Vivaldi (no sound) and qjackctrl (disables mouse)...?

2018-03-11 Thread tuxic
Hi,

I got two problems, which have to do woth "sound" ... more or less.

First one: The vivaldi browser does not produce any audio...
The Vivaldi support page says (for Ubuntu) one had to install a
certain ffmpeg package, which is - namewise - related to chromium.

Since there is a USE flag "chromium" for ffmeg, I installed this:

but with no success.

I use alsa and jackd - no pulseaudio and such.

Searching for "gentoo vivaldi no sound" gave my a couple of links,
which all mention the ubuntu package mentioned above.

What can I do Gentoo-like to enable audio with Vivaldi ?

Second problem is a little spooky:
(Previously this has worked without problems...)

When I start qjackctrl, the mouse buttons and keyboard get disabled.
Caps-Lock still switches the LED and the cursor is still moving.

I have installed this:
[I] media-sound/qjackctl
 Available versions:  0.4.5 {alsa dbus debug portaudio}
Installed versions: 0.4.5(12:12:35 PM 03/11/2018)(alsa -dbus -debug

 Homepage:http://qjackctl.sourceforge.net/
Description: Qt GUI to control the JACK Audio Connection Kit and
ALSA sequencer connections

I tried enableing dbus but a successfull recompilation the problem is
still the same.

Any idea, what's going on here...it feels like starting firefox
switches of my TV

Thank you very much in advance for any help!
Cheers
Meino

I think it's fairly obvious that this is supposed to be $PORTAGE_TMPDIR, i.e.,
we're supposed
to be flabbergasted (maybe even shocked!) at all the packages that are failing.

That did it.  I thought I had already checked for a unstable version but
I guess I either didn't or it wasn't there.  That's usually the first
thing I check.  That solved that problem.  Now to figure out why ffmpeg
is griping.  I ran into it last week too.  This is the beginning of
that.  It's to long to post the whole thing.

It was unmasked here but I had done that.  I removed it from the keyword
file, and some other entries elsewhere, and the stable version appears
to be version 4.  Version 5 and 6 are not marked stable, they're
keyworded, masked or both.

I don't run a strictly stable or unstable system here.  I suspect this
is due to one package being unstable and me marking it for use and
another is not.  I'll just have to dig around until I figure out which
one is offending emerge so badly.  It's quite a list but I bet it is in
there, somewhere.  lol

Thanks.

[gentoo-user] ffmpeg and libav: a slot conflict

2017-02-18 Thread gevisz
Yet, a week ago, I updated my system without any problem but just now,
trying to update my system,
I have got the following error message:

# emerge --update --deep --with-bdeps=y --newuse --backtrack=90 --ask
world --verbose-conflicts --exclude chromium

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

[gentoo-user] screen tearing with mpv but not mplayer

2016-10-19 Thread Behrouz Khosravi
Hello everyone. Mpv has horizontal screen tearing(not very serious
though) while playing video while

mplayer does not. I have tried some configs which I found on the net but
nothing removes this issue.

Mpv docs even says that tearing problems are probably not related to
software but driver and such, but

it seems that this is mpv's problem. any idea about how to solve this
issue? Thanks.

No idea why this is... Why would these be masked? And why are they
listed as installed? Neither of them are showing up as available (ie.
even a package.mask being removed would fix this).

You possibly need to mask versions of ffmpeg that can't be installed
(package.mask) I just had to do that. I have been doing it on an
individual version basis, as if it gets fixed, a broader mask may not
allow the fix to be installed.

I'd argue that this behaviour is undesirable, as from what I
experienced myself, once masked the update continues successfully, and
it knows it can't safely install the troublesome ffmpeg packages...
Some way of it acknowledging that *those* updates can't be installed,
but continuing any way would be helpful.

I believe it's (this is more an opinion about *how* this is behaving)
it's problematic behaviour in terms of Portage. From what I can see
with this problem, nothing breaks if the version 5 or 6 doesn't get
installed, and nothing in the dependency indicates that it will/should.

That said, on this machine where I was working on this, something did
break, which has since been fixed (but not instantly).

2023-12-04 Thread Dale
Howdy,

I either started a thread on this a while back or it was mentioned
inside another thread.  This has been popping up for months now.  Either
I have something set wrong or there is a problem in a ebuild or
something.  I just don't know what.  This is what I get.  I'm having to
use this command because it does update everything else.  This however
triggers the same as I get during a regular world update.

root@fireball / # emerge -auDN ffmpeg mpv mplayer

I finally installed a web browser on the target computer, and
so can (just for the history:) copy and paste the result of running
this and other commands on the target computer.

# gcc -c -Q -march=native --help=target | grep march=
  -march=core2
So, you were right about core2

So, mmxext flag is indeed absent here.

I have not yet included it in CPU_FLAGS_X86 and think that
it produces a strange error messages when I try emerge some

[gentoo-user] nvidia-drivers wants static-libs, I do not.

2022-02-13 Thread Dale
Howdy,

I recently did my weekly updates.  It wanted nvidia-drivers to have the
static-libs USE flag enabled so I did it.  Then the video card wouldn't
work when I logged out and back in because of a mismatch somewhere so I
disabled static-libs and emerged it again.  That fixed the problem of no
GUI.  Now I'm trying to finish the upgrade and get a clean output.
However, it seems a package, vtk and/or opencascade, demands the
static-libs USE flag for nvidia-drivers which would again break the
display the next time I logout and back in.  So, no matter what it
wants, it can not have it.  The drivers do me no good if the result
leaves me without a GUI.  This is the best output with details I can
get.  I've tried removing packages, doing it in smaller parts but either
way, it ends up with this:

root@fireball / # emerge -auDNt world

These are the packages that would be merged:

[blocks b  ] From the way it looks to me, it is one or more of the  acct-group/*
packages pulling it in.  Maybe I'm not reading that correctly.  Does
anyone know how to work around this?  Is this a bug that needs to be
reported?

I'm going to try to update small bits at a time and see if I can make
some progress.  Any ideas or clues would be welcome.

Thanks.
