Some Linux distributions, as well as popular windows binary packages
come out without the GIF plug-in. It is usually downloadable as a
separate plug-in with a note for the patent issues.

This can be a major PITA sometimes (you need to do GIF, and just find
out the live Linux CD with GIMP on it is lacking the gif plug-in for
example)

[Gimp-developer] Perl module, Gimp-2.0pre3.tar.gz available

2004-04-24 Thread Seth Burgess
The latest gimp-perl module pre-release is available!

This fixes problems with the 'make test', as well as running scripts
from the commandline (without a Perl-Server running).

It also adds licensing info to each plug-in in the examples/
directory, since these are licensed individually. If you are the
author of any that I don't have info for yet (I've attempted to
contact everybody), please contact me so I can add the correct
information there.

This release requires gimp-2.0.

There's the predictable slew of bugfixes as well. See ChangeLog for details.

I've finally made it through the plug-ins I can test, fixing things
along the way. Several are currently non-functional (or very
marginally useful from an example coding or usage standpoint), and
will be removed by the final release if not made functional. These
are:

alpha_to_color avi border circular_text clear_alpha colourtoalpha Create_Images
fire fit-text gap-vcr gimpmagick homepage-logo miff PDB perlcc logulator
parasite-editor povray roundrectsel terral_text triangu visual

Brief descriptions of the results of my testing are found in
examples/examples.TODO. If you feel strongly that one of these should
be included in the release, please let me know. I'm also accepting
patches :)

Many thanks to Dov Grobgeld for his fixes of several plug-ins.

I'll be uploading to CPAN shortly. You can download it immediately from:

ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/plug-ins/v2.0/perl/Gimp-2.0pre3.tar.gz

Most stuff that you'd expect from a stable release is probably in
here. If I don't get a lot of reports of problems, next release won't
have a 'pre' attached to it.

Happy GIMPing,

Seth Burgess

I explained the versioning scheme in a mail to this list. You
obviously missed that. Here it is again:

The version number has been changed to 2.1.0. We plan to have the
gimp-2.2 plug-in API completely backward compatible to gimp-2.0.
Nevertheless most versions have been bumped to 2.1 for now. This is
to avoid confusion when both the gimp-2.0 and the development branch
are installed. It does _not_ mean that you can install gimp-2.0 and
gimp-2.1 into the same prefix. The two installations are _not_
disjunct, you need to keep them in separate prefixes!

When we approch gimp-2.2, we will probably change most version
numbers back to the GIMP API version which is 2.0.

Me.

But I agree that we should try to keep discussions on-topic.

When was GIF support removed and why didn't I notice?

[Gimp-developer] conflict between 2.0 and 2.1

2004-04-24 Thread William Skaggs
Hi,

I'd like to bring up what appears to be a conflict between 2.0 and
2.1 that will become relevant as soon as a tarball of 2.1 is released.
Building 2.1 causes the version info in pkgconfig/gimp-2.0.pc to
be set to 2.1. This means that any plug-in built thereafter will be
installed in 2.1, and there is no way to install new plug-ins for 2.0
without doing something kludgy.

Either that, or I'm missing something :-).

Best,

I was thinking that Jpeg support might have to be preemptively removed
like Gif support was removed. (Although the Gif patents have expired in
America and will expire in Europe in June)

On reading more, some comments suggest that this issue might not be
specific enough to effect the Gimp but then I always believed Gif could
have been included in the Gimp if parts of the Gif compression had been
disabled but these issues are always more complicated than they
seem.
