[Gimp-developer] Announce Scribus 1.3.4 - Open Source Page Layout

2007-05-29 Thread Plinnell
The Scribus Team is pleased to announce the release of Scribus
1.3.4 Антон

Almost one year in the making, this release brings Scribus to a new
plateau in professional print capabilities, innovative features and a
completely re-written text layout engine.

Among the major new features in 1.3.4:

* A rewritten preview mode which allows designers and artists to view
layouts on screen as readers with color viewing deficiencies would
view a document. Thus, this enables a designer to avoid color
combinations which affect legibility.

* Major additions to TIFF/PSD support. This includes the ability to
use clipping paths in TIFF and PSD files to allow text wrapping. In
addition, Scribus now can import special flavors of EPS exported from
Photoshop known as Desktop Color Separations (version 1.0 and 2.0).
Layers, blend modes, Duo,Tri and Quadtone PSD files are now also
supported.

* The new styles and text capabilities include style inheritance for
paragraphs, character styles and line styles. This is now managed by
a new style manager palette.

* The new text layout engine has a multitude of enhancements for
vastly better more appealing justification, including the use of
optical margins and more sophisticated word spacing algorithms.

*New pre-press capabilities including, registration marks, crop marks,
calibration bars and document meta info. These are all easily managed
within the print and PDF export dialogs.

* Color management enhancements including better CMYK CMYK
conversions.
* A rewritten and more capable Scrapbook
* Support for patterns; both bitmap and vector
* A more capable Align and Distribute Palette
* Extended Multiple Copying
*New transparency features including blend modes for layers and
individual objects
* A new cross-platform Icon set from the Tango Project

 Moin,

slowly but steadily the state of GIMP 2.3 is reaching a point where
it can be released as 2.4. I would like to point out some
showstoppers in the hope that we can get some help with them. There
is also the list of bugs on the 2.4 milestone in Bugzilla and this
mail somewhat overlaps with that. But it also mentions a few things
that are not in Bugzilla (but probably should be).

Here's a small list of outstanding items for GIMP 2.4, from the top
of my head, incomplete and subject to discussion:

 Finish rectangle tools

The rewritten rectangle tools (rect and ellipse select as well as
crop) are getting better, but there are still some regressions
(mainly in the Crop tool, see Bugzilla) and the tool options still
need an overhaul. Would be nice if we could come up with a decent
tool options UI proposal, then implement it.

 Finish color management

Main feature missing here is giving the display filters access to
the image's color profile. As soon as that is implemented, we
should have a prepress professional review the functionality. I
would also like to further improve the color management
preferences. In this case it seems like a good idea to try to get
something that resembles the Photoshop color management
configuration in terms of terminology and policies.

snipped

 Sven

I have been playing with the color management in CVS and it is getting
there for sure.

My thinking is the choice of controls and terminology should be guided
by the 3 modes you have.

1. No color management means that and everything assumes RGB with no
display compensation.

2. Managed Display - To me mode this should be used for web graphics
and users with the large majority of inkjets which are indeed RGB
devices in that they expect RGB data.

3. Press Simulation - Exactly that. Simulating CMYK Printers of all
kinds.

In the case of #3, you could argue that having a choice to enable some
form of gamut warning. Mind you gamut warnings are just that. I would
not enable this for # 2

One thing which needs fixing is profile locations. Finding and setting
the profiles is not obvious on Linux

On Linux/*nix, we've outlined those directories on openicc and most of
it is taking hold as a spec. This should be a recursive search as
some profile packages are now available for distros and they
sometimes separate RGB and CMYK locations.

Windows NT and Win9x have different default locations, but they should
be searched automatically IMO.

The trickier bit for me is how you handle importing CMYK images. I
just did a test and it detects there is an embedded icc profile and
asks correctly if I want to replace it or keep it. However, it is
CMYK, yet asks to replace sRGB with a differently named SRGB profile
and the console outputs:

'** (lcms:16300): WARNING **: Attached color profile is not for RGB
color space.'

My thinking is that any CMYK image imported should have a simple
warning that it is not currently supported and a best effort
conversion is made to RGB.

File Properties might be good place also to note if a given image
has an embedded profile.

I'm game

I'm forwarding your mail on to the GIMP developers list, since
honestly I've never developped anything for the GIMP on Windows,
and I don't know where you might be able to get a hild of a
 gimptool-2.0 for the platform.

The build environment for GIMP development on Windows is a bit
tricky - I've bailed out a couple of times after getting all the

anyone can point you in the right direction, they're probably on
 the gimp-dev list.

Hi,

Here is how Scribus launches GIMP on Win32 from within Scribus:

The default on windows is:
C:/Program Files/GIMP-2.0/bin/gimp-win-remote.exe gimp-2.2.exe

This will then either start a new instance of gimp or use the
currently running version of gimp. This is the command you would need
to use for the Start Run dialog.

If I am wrong, I hope someone corrects this.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Peter

[Gimp-developer] Scribus Team Releases 1.3.0 - La Liberté

2005-07-16 Thread PLinnell
The Scribus Team is pleased to announce a technology preview of the
next generation of Scribus - Open Source Desktop Publishing.

The aim for this release is to bring improvements and enhancements for
both professionals and beginning users alike. 1.3.0 improves Scribus'
abilities in areas like performance, accessibility and workflow. With
this release, we also commence support for Scribus running natively
on Windows and Mac OS X.

While it is very stable and usable, there are a number of under the
hood changes which will continue through the 1.3.x series

 * Work is on-going to make Scribus more platform independent and
alpha quality builds of Scribus are already working on Win32 and Mac
OS X. A native Mac OS X build is available here:
http://aqua.scribus.net

* There is a new undo system, which includes an undo palette that has
the undo history with details of each action. Undo also has object
specific capabilities. The number of undo/redo steps can be set in
the preferences.

* Revised document and application preferences. Extensive attention
has been placed on making preferences easier to use with document and
application preferences distinctly separated.

* Scribus now has scratch space which can be used to store objects
partially or fully off the page.

 * Scribus can now generate Tables of Contents, based on user
definable/selectable attributes.

* Scribus now has its own built-in pre-flight verifier for printing or
exporting to PDF. The pre-flighter is designed to look for issues
which might cause problems when printing or exporting PDF.

* More professional DTP features like adding ciceros for measurement
units and support. Scribus now has true facing page support and page
objects such as images can span them.

* Scribus now has more extensive support for CMYK images, as well as
clipping paths in TIFF files, CMYK-JPEG, as well as new support for
native Photoshop ® PSD files. 16-bit RGB/CMYK TIFF and PSD support
will follow soon. ICC color management of for these image formats is
also upgraded.

 * New image effect features including tinting, greyscaling, blurring,
colorizing and sharpening.

 * Scribus 1.3.0 now supports PDF 1.5 features including layers in
PDF.

 * Scribus 1.3.0 uses an intermediary file format based on the Scribus
1.2.x format. The new format to finally replace this intermediary
format is in design and development stages and its implementation
will begin soon.

For future development versions, we will be announcing competitions
for icon sets and splashscreens.

The Scribus Team would also like to thank Anduin.net/Øverby Consulting
and [EMAIL PROTECTED] GmbH, Hamburg for gracefully sponsoring our Scribus
Documentation site, our Bug Tracker and Anonymous CVS server. Also, a
note of thanks to University of Salford - School of Media, Music and
