Re: [H] Dead Drobo FS?
Yeah I went there and they're all like $40-50. As my friend pointed out, he told me to test the PS with my voltmeter and putting the red inside and the black on the outside and when I did I was getting zero voltage from the end that plugs into the Drobo! I then took the cord from the outlet and checked the two prongs on AC that was going into the brick and was getting 120V! So power was flowing to the brick, but not out of the brick-so it was the PS that was dead (at least). Just to be sure I also checked the 19.5V PS for my laptop (a bad-ass MSI gaming laptop that draws 9.23A which is why it probably never works on the damn plane b/c it draws too much juice!) and it registered 19.5V as it should...so pretty clear it's the Drobo PS (at least-guess the enclosure could still be fried but won't know for sure until I replace the PS to check!) The sad thing is I'd bought a Drobo FS enclosure from a dude on ebay for $100 (which is pretty cheap since most were going for $200-300 as I'd made an offer for $100 and he instantly accepted it-along with $17 shipping) but I'm pretty sure I don't need it now so I cancelled the order and am trying to make sure that he doesn't ship it out-and while he was super fast to respond to the offer he hasn't responded to the request yet...which makes me wonder if he's going to try to send it out and stick me with it...not the worst since it was only $100 but still... And the PS that say they're for the Drobo are ~$40. My friend pointed out that I just need to get one that outputs the same amps at the right voltage (8.33A at 12V), so I found this and offered $9 and let's see if it works! It should right? https://www.ebay.com/itm/Quality-12V-DC-8A-8-amp-96W-POWER-Supply-ADAPTER-Transformer-for-LED-Strip-CCTV/162294980793 If he doesn't accept the offer I'll just buy it at the $11 full price lol! :P BINO -Original Message- From: Hardware On Behalf Of lopaka polena Sent: Friday, August 9, 2019 4:38 PM To: hardw...@lists.hardwaregroup.com Subject: Re: [H] Dead Drobo FS? I have a drobo 5N as the backup for my synology 1518+. Drobo is faster on large transfers but synology support is much better and longer. [H] Dead Drobo FS?
Well so since it seems the list isn't dead, figured I could ask here... I have an older Drobo FS that I got from a friend (old network attached storage model). I had it off for a while while I was redoing my cabinet and went to power it on and nothing. Zero, zip, zilch no matter what outlet I try to use. So I'm wondering if it's the enclosure or the power supply and replacement PS are $50-70 online and that seems a waste if it's the enclosure, so any thoughts? Anyone have a spare Drobo PS lying around they wouldn't mind sending me? And if I was to replace it, what would be the best recommended replacement? I assume since it's a Drobo proprietary FS I wouldn't be able to transfer the drives to a regular RAID backup so I'd lose whatever was on them huh? H, that's not so good... Thoughts? BINO

Hey Z, What are you using for a 10G network adapter in the Unraid server? I've already have a cache drive in the Unraid server. I’m still alive too. I’ve been around since it was Toms OC group :) My machine is seriously like 6-8 years old at this point, but I rarely use it. I’d LOVE to build a new one, but just no need yet. I’ll rebuild my home server farm first 😂 I’m out at Blackhat/DEFCON for the 12th year :) if you all are out here, send me a note :) Julian (Sabre) Sent from my iThingy, but not in that iShortBus kind of way. > On Aug 9, 2019, at 6:25 AM, Christopher Fisk > wrote: > > I went the opposite way a bit back. I went the opposite way a bit back. I had a motherboard with 8 SATA & 2 NVMe, so I went ahead and threw together a storage spaces setup with 8 Spinning drives to complement my NVMe boot drive. it's still pretty much overkill for anything though. Re: [H] List seems dead these days?
Yes, though I mostly went older enterprise gear. My core is a Juniper EX4200 stack, which gives me 6 SFP+ slots, but I have a 48-port SFP+ Cisco Nexus switch for 10gb fiber and a more prosumer-level Netgear for 10GbaseT--though I use fiber for most connections. I'm even putting my VM hosts on 40gbps as the Nexus has 4 40gbps QSFP+ ports too. -Original Message- From: Hardware [mailto:hardware-boun...@lists.hardwaregroup.com] On Behalf Of Steve Tomporowski Sent: Friday, August 9, 2019 7:14 AM To: hardw...@lists.hardwaregroup.com Subject: Re: [H] List seems dead these days? I have a Synology server on my network as the main fileserver and have stuck with 1gbps (albeit two ports at once). I don't have any real use cases for faster, at least not yet. - Brian On Fri, Aug 9, 2019 at 2:19 PM Z Vaper wrote: > I have 3 wires devices at home. I have 3 wires devices at home. My VM server, unraid server and my desktop and all 3 are 10gbps. The difference is substantial and unraid handles it well provided you're using a caching drive. Re: [H] List seems dead these days?
Userbenchmark isn't without utility, but it should be noted that they've just recently rebalanced their cpu performance reporting in a really silly way, basically massively understating the performance of >4 core cpus by making cores above the 4th 2% of the weight of the score, so by their current metrics an i3 can be preferable to a like, 28 core xeon... Which... Just no. Re: [H] List seems dead these days?
It's alive! I actually did a rebuild of my main machine at the end of last year (i8700k, Asus Z370-Prime, GTX 1080 SC) and learned the hard way about DDR4 incompatibilities when filling all four RAM slots. BTW, if you haven't seen it yet, this is a great site for comparing various builds: https://www.userbenchmark.com But when it came to my kids' gaming machines, I just bought a pair of Dell Inspiron desktops because they were the same price as what I could have built myself and just less hassle. I have found myself getting more into networking gear. I recently rebuild my home network using Unifi gear from Ubiquity (including switches, APs, and POE cameras) and that has proven to be very rewarding. The gear is much more customization and powerful than most consumer networking gear. - Brian On Fri, Aug 9, 2019 at 3:12 AM Tim Lider <619be...@gmail.com> wrote: > I've been a part of the list since 95 or 96.
