KR> What are most KR-2's inside fuselage width?

2016-11-07 Thread Randy Smith
That's the way my wife and I looked with my KR2. After 1 of use put on weight
?I had to by a bigger plane. The Kr then became a KR1. About landing on a grass
strip. I did that on a 2500 foot strip for 10 years. Sometimes when the lake
was up it would be 2200.? Airport is 30F look at google map. I had a tail wheel
not nose gear and that will make a difference. I would come in at 5 mph over
stall about 800 fpm and flare. stopped every time. I miss that plane. I now
have Less Palmers KR and it is very heavy and is not as much fun. Poor thing
has been sitting for 2 years and I hope after my engine rebuild on my 14-13-2
Bellanca Cruiseair. I am going to spend some time on it and try to race it.

I was looking for a photo I took at the KR Gathering in 2001, to
illustrate how tight the KR2 (and KR2S) are if you build it per the
plans.? Especially the KR2 with the bubble canopy, which forces both
pilot and passenger to lean in a bit to dodge the edge of the bubble.
That's easily dealt with solo, as you can just slide over a tad in the
seat, although a center stick limits that.

See image below, which shows Rob Schmitt in the passenger seat of Terry
Chizak's KR2, taken from above by some idiot hanging out the missing
back door of Larry Flesner's Tripacer.? Also, note how "short-coupled"
the KR2 is...the horizontal stabilizer is very close to the wing, hence
the pitch sensitivity...

KR> What are most KR-2's inside fuselage width?

2016-11-05 Thread Sid Wood
My stock plans-built KR-2 cockpit width is 34 inches inside rail to inside
rail at the widest point. Two 200-pound persons can fit with passenger left
arm around my shoulder, but very uncomfortable to close the canopy. Oh, now
you want to fly like that? Ain't gonna happen. With me and full fuel, the
payload is 84 pounds before going over gross. Gross weight is computed by
the FAA recommended standard weight procedure. Had I known what that 34
inches width would mean, I definitely would have widened the boat by 6
inches and settled for a slower cruise speed.
If you are just starting out, I definitely recommend you buy the supplement
and build the KR-2S. Besides, the KR-2 plans, as is, have a flaw that can
get you killed due to inherent aft CG. The supplement does fix that.

How many fly with a passenger?

I am new to the group and would like feedback.

I fly with passengers regularly. I can handle a passenger up to 5' 10" and 200
pounds based on my canopy size and how my C.G. worked out. It is definitely
tight for two full sized adults. I do quite a few Young Eagles flights with her.

I just measured N891JF, a very stock KR2. Width at the shoulders
(inside longeron to inside longeron) is 33.25". That's what counts,
because that's where the circulation is cut off in your arms when
another person is in the plane with you! At the panel, it's 35.5" wide
between the longerons, but that doesn't matter so much...you knees are
much narrower than your shoulders (I'd hope). Width where your butt
sits (just above the bottom of the seat, and about three inches forward
of the seat back) is about 32".

When I built N56ML (KR2S), I measured my wife and myself in a doorway,
and we totaled 34", or about 17" each. We are both quite thin, by
today's standards, so I widened the plane about 2.5" at the shoulders.

One misconception is that the KR2S is wider than the KR2. That's true
at the firewall, but the cockpit is exactly the same as the KR2not
wide enough! I suspect this was to keep RR from having to develop an
all new turtle deck, but I could be wrong. It was definitely a mistake,
IMHO. It was the thing that needed widening most. But it's easily done
during construction as are other changes, unlike RV-type aluminum aircraft.
