I haven't followed this thread very carefully, so pardon me if I'm restating the obvious -- is there any chance that your browser automatically uncompressed the .tgz, but left the name unchanged? This has happened to me in the past, where I thought I had a .tar.gz file (perhaps named .tgz) but in reality was a plain .tar file. Using "tar -xf" rather than "tar -xvf" took care of it. That would be a good idea. Maybe you could include a link to the zip version in your homepage. Regards, Juergen.

only one remark: if you are able to get it with wget than try wget http://www.perce.de/lyx/LyXTips.tgz anyway, there is also a zip version http://www.perce.de/lyx/LyXTips.zip let me know if you want to use it more often, than I'll update it together with the tgz version. There is plenty of Windows software out there that is able to cope with .tgz flawlessly. Andre' PS: > After all LyX is available for Windows too. My personal view on this has changed from "Fortunately" to "Unfortunately" during the last few months(!). At least I am not willing to accept that kind of argument as incentive to change anything. Thanks for this. I re-downloaded the file, but it still does not work on my machine. tar -xvzf now yields: gzip: invalid compressed datacrc error gzip: invalid compressed datalength error tar etc. as above. > otherwise let me know, than I'll send it by mail, if you > are able to get such large attachements. Thanks, again, this is very kind of you, but there is not enough saving capacity available on my mail server. Apart from WWW download taking about 20 minutes by modem. So I would prefer you make the file available in tar.gz or zip format simply. In fact this is the first time I have come across a .tgz file at all. For the sake of cross-platform availability zip files should be used generally. I think this is important first of all to Windows users changing to Linux seeking help to work with LyX. tgz being a unix-linux format in the first place it is second-best choice for providing a Help file anyway. Regards, Juergen.

I have never had any difficulties working with archives. As all my archivers cannot cope with the LyXTips.tgz there is probably something wrong with the archive I have downloaded last night. Could it be that the problem is due to the fact that I made the download working with Windows? My box has a winmodem only. So I have no access to the internet from my Linux system. I have to download the file with Windows, then copy it to the Linux partition in KDE File Manager to run tar. If this is so I think you should change the compressing format to simple *.zip which can be decompressed with Windows software anyway. After all LyX is available for Windows too. Regards, Juergen.
