Re: Should I upgrade to Ventura?

2022-10-28 Thread 'Mary Ward' via MacVisionaries
Is anybody else having trouble with random text not showing up in edit fields?
I can be typing away, go back to proofread, and find that several letters are
missing. I know I typed them. I was never aware of losing focus either, the
text just disappears. This did not happen before I installed Ventura.

The problem does not happen right after I reboot the computer, but if I leave
it on for several hours, it will. It has happened in email, TextEdit, the
calendar, and I believe in messages.

Creating Commanders - Was: vo command to close an application?

2022-10-28 Thread Bill Gallik
I believe you are asking if there is a way to assign a key sequence to
automatically launch a specific app. For instance, I have a Commander using
the “w” to launch MS-Word. When I wish to use MS-Word I type in the key
combination of and the app is opened. Now for some
explanation (WARNING, this may turn into a dissertation):

If you are familiar with the VO Utility and Commanders, stop reading now! Or,
if you prefer, use the online help feature to familiarize yourself with the
VoiceOver utility and creating Commanders.

First, to see the list of existing Commanders press (yes, that is two
h’s to press quickly in sequence while is pressed), this will place you in
a menu. Arrow down in this menu until you get to “Keyboard Commanders.” Then
arrow right, you will find yourself in a list of existing Commanders; each line
in this list will identify the function (i.e., open application), the app and
the key combination to activate the Commander. For example, in my list I would
find “open application, Word, w

You can use to get out of this.

Now to create a Commander:

1) Open the VO Utility (
2) You will find yourself in the “Utility Categories” table; arrow down until
you observe “Commanders"
 3) At this point, arrow right whereupon you will be in a set of 3 options to
select where the “hot key” will come from. In my case I use the “w” from the
keyboard so I select
4) and make sure the “Enable Keyboard Commander” checkbox is
in fact checked.
5) to the “Use” Pop-Up, activate and make your desired
selection from the list. In my case, I use the Right Option key.
6) past the “Commanders Table” to the “Add” button and
activate it. This will place you in that “Commanders Table” where you will
enter the desired key to use as the “Hot Key” (in my Word case, I’m using lower
case “w”).
7) After entering the desired letter, where you will find
yourself in a menu and select “Custom Commands” and arrow right there.
8) Now you are in the “Actions Menu” and arrow”Open Application” should be the
first option, select it.
9) By default, the above action will place you in the “Applications” folder
where you may select the desired program or move to an alternative folder where
the desired program has been installed.

Once you have selected the application to launch with the assigned “Hot Key”
you can conveniently use that “Hot Key” to launch that application.

As I mentioned earlier, when I want to open Word I just enter

NOTE: the identified letter is case dependent. If I so choose, I could create
a Commander using the upper case W, this would be different from the lower case
“w” Commander.

2022-10-28 Thread Karen Lewellen

Lets not go that far.
Still have a track pad moving me around with barely a breath laughs.
finally found a pair of headphones, but mercy the tutorial voice is
something I wish I could change...still have lines from the system voice I
do not understand either.
But I have the important answer here, means to close a program if I get
stuck.

Re: Should I upgrade to Ventura?

2022-10-28 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Janina,

What you describe is exactly why I often wait till summer to upgrade. It’s so
frustrating to be trying to get something done, and be bogged down by Apple
. I really don’t think they get that we just need things to work. They
can introduce whatever new feature, but if you are a busy working person, you
don’t necessarily have hours to sit down and read about all the commands that
have changed, and the different ways you have to get things done. I’m not
saying change is bad, but more and more I feel like I need to take a few days
off from life every time there’s an Apple upgrade, just so I can read about how
things work in the new OS. I don’t have time for that.
Cheers,
Donna

I'm rather wishing I'd waited. I'm upgraded yesterday, so have limited
experience. But I had issues just getting applications list to work as
expected under Finder today--right when I didn't need the headache of
systems not working as expected.

Then there are those wonderful notifications wanting to inform you of
all the marvelous new features, in Mail for instance. Well, I'd like to
read up on those, but I was in a hurry to click a particular Zoom link
that I knew was in my inbox today. So, as you can guess, reading up on
new features was not timely.

My very ancient, nearly ten year old Airbook had fewer issues (so far)
upgrading to the latest Big Sur. Fewer issues that is until I again
accidentally tripped Speech Off on the trackpad. This is a
problem I encounter on that machine off and on. At the moment I don't
have a braille display to resolve things. But, I'm not sure I can blame
this on the Big Sur upgrade. Still, I wish I could turn that trackpad
off, as one can on Windows.

Re: Transferring data to new iMax

2022-10-28 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Well, I want to agree with Brad and Jason. It's essentially what I'm
planning to do sometime next spring when the (hopefully) M3 laptops are
released.

I do have some caveats, however.

For instance this next time around I plan to rely a bit more on folders
even for grouping applications. I am slowly, ever so slowly learning to
use Native Instruments. But, I hate the way NI simply installed itself
at /Applications. I plan to push my reinstall of NI into a "Native
Instruments" folder just to help me manage things more efficiently. I'll
probably do something similar with all the Google docs I'll inevitably
also install.

What I'm unsure about is how to manage the sound fonts that I will be
adding. iCloud would be inefficient for those--yet that seems to be
where they ended up on the first go around (on my 2020 era Intel Mini).
One option I'm mulling is a fast external drive with 4, or maybe even
more Tb. That would keep those all important data files available to any
Mac I might use with NI--even the old Intel Mini!

The only remaining issue I see so far is how to bring over the various
specific configurations I have created over the years. Much as I would
like the ease of simply restoring them, I suspect the smarter move is to
simply accept the time commitment required to configure the new machine
app by app starting with some of the fundamentals like Internet
settings, then ssh (and related security).

Frankly I have not always done this, because it does take time. My three
current Linux machines all contain configurations copied across multiple
installs of multiple Linux versions going back a good 20 years. I'm
convinced some of the problems I have on those systems, while not
numerous, are nevertheless hidden somewhere in all those upgrades.

Best,

Janina

how did you copy over the files you want? I don’t use Drop box ore have enough

Thanks again.

Donna,

Have you checked out the bugs found vintora article on applevis? I have been
using iit since one of the betas and have not found any mager problems. I
always do a clean refresh after any mager os upgrade which seems to help with
preventing problems. In any event, I have a stable system here with a mac mini
2018 intel machine. Your milage may very on your system.

rather have my language than a second one. :)

I have the link to the AppleVis guide to System Settings. If I do upgrade, I’m
sure I’ll be checking that out in detail.

Re: Should I upgrade to Ventura?

2022-10-28 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi Mickey,

I teach Spanish. I don’t really use anything too unusual - Word, Mail, Safari,
QuickTime and Amadeus Pro. I guess what makes me hesitant is that I was really
unhappy after upgrading my phone and my watch. Basic things about using them
with Voiceover were either broken, didn’t work as well, or had been modified in
ways that I wasn’t able to do something that I used to do. If it’s summertime,
I’m in a much better position to ride those things out, without having to worry
about accomplishing tasks quickly and efficiently. All that said, most of
what’s been posted on this list has been positive, so I’m tempted to go ahead
and upgrade. But I thought I’d ask directly before taking the plunge.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Should I upgrade to Ventura?

2022-10-28 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Well, at least you can get your own language. I think if I had to pick, I
rather have my language than a second one. :)

I have the link to the AppleVis guide to System Settings. If I do upgrade, I’m
sure I’ll be checking that out in detail.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: Slides presentation and VoiceOver

2022-10-28 Thread Julie Rattray
Hi,

So you have two options for doing slides etc with the Mac:

You can use keynote - the Mac presenter application - I find it fairly easy to
use and you can create slides and save the presentation fairly easily. The
slide formatter area allows you to add slide transitions as well. Keynote also
as the functionality to save as a ppt file just in case you are presenting
using a different computer.

If you have office on your Mac then ppt is also very accessible and creating
slides is usually straight forward.

For both options you can either use a template presentation or create your won
- the advantage of the templates is that they position the text on the slide
where it needs to be etc.

I do however, still find that I get someone with vision to check over the
presentation just to make sure it looks ok etc

But using both keynote or ppt I am able to add images, text graphs to slides -
I can also add hyperlinks to video if I want to use that.

One thing - and I need to check keynote again - ppt allows you to add a sound
as part of the slide transition which is really useful when presenting with no
vision as it lets you know the slide has changed. You can do this in keynote
but it used to be more complicated - I will take a look to see if this has
changed.

If you need any more specific information this is just quite general get back
to me and I can see if I can help

Good news for those who did not like the switch to percentages in Watch 9

2022-10-28 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

For those who shared my displeasure with the shift in Watch 9 to VO speaking
percentages rather than numbers in the activity complication, that appears to
have been fixed in 9.1. I’m using the Modular face, so cannot speak for what
happens with other watch faces.
Cheers,
Donna

Should I upgrade to Ventura?

2022-10-28 Thread 'Donna Goodin' via MacVisionaries
Hi all,

As some of you may remember, I teach, so I am often hesitant to upgrade my Mac
during the academic year. In addition, I did not have good experiences with
upgrades to IOS 16 or Watch 9, so I’m especially gun-shy about upgrade to
Ventura? I know that everyone’s mileage may vary, but based on your
experiences thus far, should I upgrade or not?
TIA,
Donna.

Please pardon me, but in my immediately prior message I implied that I was
using MS-Word, but in fact the app is MS-Excel.

MS-Word Shortcut Keys

2022-10-28 Thread Bill Gallik
I have a quite specific question and then a more general issue.

First, the specific question; in Word help I read that using the key sequence
<+> will insert the current time and/or time in the focussed cell. I
presume the cell must be formatted appropriately prior to deploying this key
sequence. I did format the cell for date, but when I entered <+> I
got absolutely nothing. Can anybody offer some advice here?

Now, for the more general question; is there a quick and convenient way to view
a list of such key combinations? Activating help and searching for specific
such key combinations is quite tedious and I’d prefer to have a simple list to
