MI 5.5 beta longevity.

1999-07-26 Thread Mats Elfström

Hi All.
Does anybody know of a way to prolong the life of the 5.5 beta?
Mine died under me, and in facing days of Overlay Errors once again.
(was so happy while it lasted)
No license offence intended, the Swedish version is not out yet, and I
can't be exepected to buy an english version just to cover the delay.

MI map file encryption

1999-07-26 Thread Frank Siciliano

Hi,

Can anyone help with suggestions for encrypting or protecting MapInfo
files from simply being copied and used?

Our Centre is developing a CD-ROM using Delphi with Access and MapX. We
want to try and protect the map files so that no-one is going to use them
on anything but our application.

Thanks

RE: MI Label problem

1999-07-26 Thread Mark Knudsen

Fran,

The best way might be to select those streets you want labelled (either by selecting
or by querying on some characteristic) and then adding the resultant query to the
mapper and then labelling it rather than the original table.

This is actually a pretty powerful way of selectively labelling, although some sort of
intelligence in the labelling function (such as an IF statement would be handy!!!)

OK, I have a really infuriating one this morning! I have turned on the
labels in my street centerline file and have selected duplicate text ok, but
no overlapping text and no labelling partial segments. BUT it is labelling
partials! Well, no problem, I will just select and delete the ones in the
map window that I do not want. Right? Wrong! When I move the window
slightly to center and it redraws, there they all are AGAIN! OK, so I will
outsmart it - I will select and delete the labels I do not want, go straight
to the layout window and print - there they are again. I have also
deselected the duplicate text and select label partial segments and it
doesn't give me all of the streets. Does anyone on the list have any
suggestions short of turning of the labels and manually selecting each
individual street?

MI Building new tables on the fly

1999-07-26 Thread Tony Elson

We are using data that is structured around the use of numerous tables.

However, in Mapinfo as opposed to other GIS, building new layers or
tables based on selections that are joined to other tables is laboured -
unless I am not doing something right.

Mapinfo won't allow selections on dynamic joins that are not "base
tables" (i.e the concept of a database view or table definition isn't
available).

The user has to make a copy of the selection (i.e. save copy as) then
build the next stage in the query to create a new table or layer.

This does not seem to me to be particularly efficient.

Does anyone have any ideas on building temporary or permanent tables on
the fly without adding to the existing data sets with an "intermediate"
layer, other than creating a "flat" table.

Regards

MI Geographic Operators

1999-07-26 Thread David McDonald

This may be an obvious question to some!
Is there a geographic operator for selecting points "outside" of regions.
I thought you could use "Not Within" or similar, but this does not seem to work.

ie "Point.Obj Not Within Region.Obj"

All the listed operator commands seem to based on being within another object and none
seem to relate to being outside.

Can someone please help?

MI Potential problem with the MapInfo WITHIN Operator

1999-07-26 Thread David M Haycraft

People:

There is a potential problem with the WITHIN operator in the Mapinfo SELECT
statement. The problem is that the result set produced by a
SELECT...WITHIN can incorrectly contain DUPLICATE RECORDS.

In my case, this behaviour initially lead to significant overcounting errors
in a survey analysis project, and took some time to isolate and find a
work-around.

The trouble can arise when you try to select and count POINT objects from
one table using a set of adjacent REGION objects in a second table. For
example, if Client is a POINT table and SurveyArea is a REGION table
containing a group of Census Tracts that +ACI-tile+ACI- the survey area then the
statement

 Select Client.+ACo-
 From Client, SurveyArea
 Where SurveyArea.Obj contains Client.Obj

will sometimes include duplicate copies of Clients.

What happens is that any Client point that falls right on the boundary
between two census tracts IS SELECTED IN BOTH REGIONS BY THE WITHIN
OPERATOR, and is thus double-counted.

In my case the work-around was to explicitly pre-select and combine all the
CensusTract objects to create a single SurveyArea region, thus eliminating
any double-counting caused by the internal boundaries.

The same phenomenon occurs in both MapInfo Pro 5.0 and MapInfo Pro 5.5.

MI Re: Accuracy of MapMarker 4.5 Plus versus MapQuest

1999-07-26 Thread Derek Wilson

Does anyone know if version 5.0 of MapMarker is significantly more accurate
than MapMarker 4.5 Plus? We have compared some addresses geocoded with
MapMarker 4.5 Plus to addresses located via the MapQuest web site and have
found the MapQuest response to be more accurate. We would hate to switch
from MapMarker to a MapQuest geocoding subscription, but unfortunately it is
one of the options we are looking at in order to achieve a higher accuracy
in site placement. If anyone has any idea for why this discrepancy might be
occurring please let me know. Thanks.

PS. What geocoder have you found to be the most accurate and how have you
measured its accuracy?

MI Need estimate of households circa 1998 by place - Champaign County Il

1999-07-26 Thread Carolyn White

Hi,

I need to compare the characteristics of a telephone survey I just completed
with the Household characteristics in Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy Illinois.

The census bureau site has 1998 POPULATION estimates for these places, but I
need estimates of Households.

While beggars can't be choosers, I would prefer to get estimates that have
weight given to building permits -- The area has been growing alot and some
algorithms of population estimates don't do well. For instance, the Census
Bureau site gives a 1998 Population estimate of Savoy Ill as 2655; they had
a special census in 1996 and had a population of 4095 (1969 households).

Can anyone help me out with a breakdown by number of households and by race
and by hispanic origin and by sex?

Thank you.

This question is for anyone who has used the SiteMapper utility available on the

First of all does that mean the point table I wish to map. Secondly if the

that says cannot open table. I am running MI 5.5 on NT4. Any suggestions would

Re: MI Temp Directory

1999-07-26 Thread Stephen L. Thompson

Stuart:

You would want to change the location of the Temp directory in general. You
can easily do that with NT. "Hover" with your mouse pointer over the "My
Computer" Icon on your desktop. Right click and click on "Properties".
Select the "Performance" Tab. Select the "Change" button in the "Virtual
Memory" area. You will see the location of your current Temp File. You can
either completely change it (However NT may require you to leave at least
2kb on C), or you can just add another drive or Drive/Folder it can use as a
temp area. You can maximixe NT's performance by being sure your Temp is on
another physical drive so that the system can read and write at the same
time.

RE: MI GIFs and MapX

1999-07-26 Thread Rob Martinson

Richard,

Indrek Mandre has written a component that changes .bmp to .gif file and
does NOT use Unisys compression (therefore you don't need a license).
You can download the component and readme from:
http://www.tallinn.ee/~indrek/gis/ . I have used this component in
several applications and it works very well.

Hope this helps...

Subject: MI GIFs and MapX

Hello,

Can any mapX users/developers tell me if it is possible create an
application within MapX that imports BMP/wmf/png and then exports them
in Gif format? also, what level of compression is possible??

Thanks

You can download the Geographic Explorer from http://www.bluemarblegeo.com. It's a
free viewer/translator/finder that has proven to be a very useful and nifty tool.

MI Temp Directory

1999-07-26 Thread Talkofsky GS09 Stuart H

Due to the way they set up my machine here, I only have limited room on the
C:\ drive Temp directory. Using Windows NT. Can I instruct Mapinfo to use
another drive for the temporary files? and how do I do that?

MI Label problem

1999-07-26 Thread Fran Peck

(I am resending this because it was bounced back from Administrator
[EMAIL PROTECTED] so will apologize in advance if it duplicates)

MI : mnu files, follow up

1999-07-26 Thread Jacques Paris

Following my request for MAPINFOW.MNU in "foreign" languages, I have already
received the following:
French, German, Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Japanese and Korean

I wanted you to be aware of it so that you would not send me one I already
have, and that you may be inticed in mailing me one that is not on the list.

The function I have written to find the language used by MI seems to perform
ok on almost all these languages, but test results are not all in yet. I
will keep you posted when that phase is concluded.

Hi list,

I want to format a field in a monetary format (by using Browse/Pick

My problem is that when using format$ function, the numbers become
aligned to the left. Is there a way to align the text to the right?

TIA,

If I understand your need, you want to "clean" your road network, i.e.
split polylines at intersections, join polylines segments between
intersections or split segments in order to respect bus routes.

Our MapInfo add-on, called MapLogix is able to realize these tasks and many
others in order to produce networks that respect topology rules. You can
try the demo, which is accompanied of a summary documentation, at
http://www.korem.com/MapLogix or on MapInfo-L site.

Hope this helps,
Josée

MI Splitting Polylines

1999-07-26 Thread Graeme Belliss

I'm looking for a utility to split polylines into multiple segments.
I need this to split a series of bus routes into links for routing
using RouteView Pro. I downloaded Mark Ogilvie's utility but it
didn't work.

Cheers
