Re: [MBZ] 83 300SD Climate Control
Thanks for the tips on the climate control unit. Didn't think of the solder fix but I'll give it a try. It is a solid car, not a heap. The 123 chassis is all I would drive on a daily basis. Rusty: I appreciate the reduced price offer, but this is another flip so I need to put the most inexpensive parts in it. Hope to be able to make a profit. They always need more repairs than you anticipate. Re: [MBZ] 83 300SD Climate Control
I pulled the old module out, it is either a replacement or has been out before. One bolt was missing that held it in place. The part number on the unit is 123 830 02 85, which shows a 123 chassis. The replacement part number is 126 830 02 85, which is the 126 chassis. From pictures on Ebay both units are the same. Rusty is getting $216 for a remanufactured unit so I'll buy a used part, cheapest on EBay is $50. Can't tell the difference but I'll get the 126 unit, hopefully it is the problem. [MBZ] 83 300SD Climate Control
The blower motor for the climate control would not work in site. Pulled the motor and direct wired it to the battery and it worked great. Does this mean that the either the climate control unit or the fan switch is bad? It will not work on defrost which I thought was the default mode which would force the motor to work. Would like to just replace the switch if that is all that is bad. Can you hot wire at the switch to test the blower motor? Electronics is not my strong suit. The odometer is not working on my 83 300 SD, but the speedometer is. Took out the instrument cluster and then remembered it is electronic and not mechanical. Re: [MBZ] 83 300SD Vacuum connections
Thanks Rich: There are several open connections on the box that sits on the valve cover. If the CD has the photo diagram that might help me make the hookup. I have two lines and four connectors if I remember correctly. The valve cover was bad so I had to order another one and my memory faded while waiting. Same thing with the fuel linkage, I think I put it together correctly, but a diagram would help. Got a piece of a vacuum line today to replace the one going to the turbo, it was hard a brittle and also broke on valve cover removal. Pieced it together to last night to warm the tranny to change the fluid. The car was a total slug so I don't know it it is vacuum lines, fuel linkage or no turbo. [MBZ] 83 300SD Vacuum connections
I need a diagram or photo of the vacuum connections on the box on top of the valve cover. I don't have the repair CD, the one for the 300D is different. [MBZ] Brake Question
My recently acquired 83 300D had weak brakes when I bought it. The pedal was soft. While bleeding the system I found the front calipers were barely working. Rebuilt the calipers and now the breaks are still soft. Bled with a pressure system and I think I have all the air out. The pedal will pump up and then slowly sink under pressure. The system has 20 inches of vacuum at the tee to the brake booster. Seems I remember the pedal action is a sign of a bad brake master cylinder. Any opinions? [MBZ] Drain Front Brake Resovoir
Looking at the brake fluid resovoir on the 83 300D. It is a Girling. I've suctioned all the fluid out from under the cap but the front section is seperate and still full of fluid. Starting to take off the front calipers to rebuild them when my Rusty parts get here. How do I get the fluid out of that sectiion? It looks dark like old fluid. I expect it will drain out when the calipers are removed, but don't know how I will get fluid back it in. Doesn't look like any connection to the rear compartment. I don't remember seeing one like this before. Re: [MBZ] Brake Caliper ID
Thanks for the replies. I cant make out any ID but it does have a recessed circle and uses cotter keys to hold the pens in. Based on this it should be a Bendix. I've reconsidered rebuilding the calipers and replacing hoses due to the expense. Will just (hopefully) replace the screw, bleed the system and check the vacuum at the booster. Maybe this will be all it takes to get good brakes. [MBZ] OT-Cordless Drill Battery
Got my cordless drill out to begin working on the bleeder screw. Then I remembered the batteries will not charge. You can charge them all night and they will run at slow speed for a couple of minutes, then quit. Not sure if it is the charger or the batteries. It is a 12v Dewalt. If I plug the charger in and put the Voltmeter on the prongs and turn the dial to 200 I get a reading of 47.5. I don't have much electrical knowledge. Anyone have a clue on how to determine the problem? You can buy a replacement batteriey in 12 or 14.4 volts or a new charger. For another $100 over the battery cost you can get a new drill, charger and two batteries in 14.4 volts. [MBZ] Bleeder screw snapped off
Began working on my recently acquired '83 300D. The brakes are weak so I started with that project. The brake fluid was coffee colored so I decided to flush the system. Bled the passenger rear but the driver rear was tight. It rounded a bit so I switched to vise grips. The screw snapped right off. It was the only 8 millimeter size on the car, all others are 9. It looks too small for my Craftsman easy-out set to work. Looks like I will have to drill it out. It will be a pain to remove the caliper and drain the system. Any easy methods to remove it? [MBZ] Sunroof Repair
The '83 300D I just bought has a problem sunroof. It was cocked a little when I looked at the car so I asked if it leaked, he said no. When he delivered the car yesterday I pointed out the gallon of water in the floorboard so we agreed on a $100 price reduction to $700. Going to play with the sunroof while I wait on brake repair parts. Of all the 123 Mercedes I've owned and worked on I have never had one with a sunroof problem. Some have been slow but they worked. If you press the sunroof switch, you just get a thumping noise and the sunroof doesn't move. Was able to shut it completely using the bolt on the motor. Loaned my repair CD out and am waiting on another one. Are there two cables since the switch does not work but the bolt on the motor does? [MBZ] New Project Car
Bought an 83 300D today. Has 270k on the clock, a little sluggish with weak brakes as it's been sitting for a year. Tranny shifts ok. Orient Red that is a little faded on the top and hood. It has some rust in both rear wheel wells and the sunroof and AC don't work. Decent interior with tan MB Tex. Paid $800 which is probably $300 too much but driving it to work will save miles on my Toyota pickup. My first project car in three years, will be one to work on for fun, my wife won't let me touch her 99 E300 4-matic Wagon. Back on the list after a 3 year or so absence. I was laid off at the auto auction where I had a moderate supply of old Benzs, although that supply was drying up.
