Sprinter here has only one engine choice in NA AFAIK.  2.7L Diesel. 
THey all seem to zip along just fine.  loaded or not.


Man I met at the pump with one was delighted with his.  He had a
fleet of vans, this was the newest, and got 25 mpg (?) loaded,
which was by far the best of them all.

Did they offer any Rudolf type engines in the swamp build mum trucks?

For years they were building Diesel ML in Alabammy, and shipping em 
all over water, telling us  "No!  YOU can't  have em;WE are a LUXURY 
car company;if it burns DIESEL it is smelly and noisy and not a 
luxury car"  even though the engines were not noisy, not smelly, but 
did burn Diesel.


MomBUSA knows more about what we want than we do   No A170Ds for here

I wasn't making any judgement, just pointing out. ;)

Most people don't have any idea what mileage they're getting. If you ask 
they'll say "about". I had a friend who claimed his Dodge extended cab with a 
318 v8 would do "about 20mpg". We did a trip to Vermont one time where I 
clocked it at 18mpg. Its hilly in Vermont but he was holding the speed down 
really trying to get the mileage up. After that he started really checking and 
realized on average he did more like 15mpg. That'd be on 128oz gallons.

How deep is the snow likely to be?
If I were looking for a snow vehicle it would be a 4X4 truck with 
some clearance. Our old 4Runner was pretty good and I have no 
complaints about my F150. Both are the sort that cannot be driven on 
dry pavement in 4 wheel drive but are pretty stable on slippery 
roads and will plough through snow as they have some clearance. AWD 
cars are interesting but don't have the clearance to permit them to 
go where the roads don't get cleared pretty quickly.

As WIlton would say:  "Zactly!  I could go anywhere in a 200D or a 
240D until the snow got so deep the car floated on the floor pans. 
Don't need 4WD in most cases.  What you need to get through snow is 
clearance, Clarence. 

When I put 7.50 16 michelin M&S tars on my broco, I gained a couple 
of inches of ground clearance.  Maybe 3-4" total gain over the 
factory small 15" tars.  In between I had N78-15 ambulance tars on it 
to get more clearance.


A well balanced 2wd car with 2 sand sacks and good tires will go 
anywhere it has clearance.  For maximum  deep snow travel, you want a 
2ton truck or larger with 22.5" tires on, and lots of weight to give 
the tires traction.  Or a front assist tractor (working cab and 
heater are nice...)


I drove the ol 65 shovey to GR MI and back in a blizzard in '80 or 
so.  It did fine.  visibility was bad at times, but the car did ok. 
something like 1200 miles round trip.  Schnee through IL, IN and MI.


A loaded truck will go through deep schnee when no car can.  (pickups 
are not really trucks unless they are grossed out.)

If theres so much snow I can't get through it with my 240D and snow tires I 
shouldn't be out. It'll push snow up to the top of the bumper with little 
concern, deeper if its powder. A heavy car with narrow tires and not too much 
power is a good snow vehicle.

Scott is right about a locking differential, my Ranger has a mere limited slip 
and its made all the difference sometimes. When we were at camp last month 
there was one road my parent's open diff Jeep Liberty just couldn't make that 
the Ranger could (but only barely).

My back lane is often drifted and has ruts from other vehicles going 
out. I don't have trouble after I get a few blocks onto more travelled 
roads but I have to say that I worry much less about getting from my 
parking spot to the major streets with 4 wheel drive.
Turn the switch and just chug along until it is not needed anymore. I 
swear I will not be without 4 wheel drive again so long as I live in 
snow country and clearance is your friend when the snow is even ankle deep.

Cannot recall what is wrong with the one you have.
Have to suggest that, if the cost of repair is reasonable and the rest of the 
one you have is good, then you are likely better off keeping it.
My truck is in that category. It is an 02 with 170K miles on it and is 
developing a bit of rust on the driver's side rocker panel. Runs good, AC works 
etc. Should consider moving on but cannot see anything I want more unless I buy 
new and I rarely do. Last new one was in 1977. Too much $$.

So, I would be fearful of getting into something that has more issues than what 
I already have.

Now, having said that, if your good wife has just come to a point in time where 
she wants, or thinks she wants a different vehicle, then you are not going to 
win this one. Even if she agrees to fix and keep, you will likely end up 
changing vehicles for her in the near future.

So, having said that, I think my advice would be to buy newer and probably the 
newest you think you can afford. Newer vehicles do tend to have some advantages 
- usually safer - and hopefully a lower likelyhood of issues. For example, my

I had read somewhere that the Lexus LS400 sedan was copied after the w126. 
Toyota bought one, took it apart bolt by bolt, and copied the suspension, etc. 
Not sure if there is any truth to that, but it does sound plausible. The 
Japanese were notorious for copying successful designs in the seventies and 
eighties, to the point of having lawsuits filed against them in some instances. 

A low milage Lexus LS400 would be a fine transportation appliance.

My brother got a one owner driven by an old lady to church Lexus LS300 or 400 a 
year or so ago. I rode in it last time I was there.

Very MB-like in that the ride and car were very solid, controls were well 
thought out, etc.

He has had very little trouble or work on it. Says its been a great car and is 
very reliable.

He got it through an auction buddy who trolls the local car auctions for stuff 
like this.

- thought it too big. He thinks he likes this one a lot more - at least 
in party because it was much less expensive. It has about 180K miles and 
he paid $3700. He has since done some work on the suspension - ball 
joints etc but he likes it and it looks good.

I do think the CDI is more reliable than the rest of the w210 line.  Too many 
questions about quality on the earlier models.  Of course, SWMBA reads Consumer 
Report and tells me what rolling turds the benz are.  Even though she drove

No, that is a real "Limited Edition"! The seller does note that he 
wrapped the original trim due to cracking, it's very similar to the 
original though. I'm surprised you've never heard of them or seen one. 
700 each were produced of the 190E 2.3 & 2.6 for the '93 MY. There was 
no charge for the additional equipment totaling around $3K, a steal really!


The 2.3 came in monotone metallic emerald green w/ cream beige leather & 
additional burl wood trim, the 2.6 in two tone black w/ black & red 
leather sport seats & carbon fiber trim. Easily recognizable by the 8 
hole rims & headlight wipers, which at the time were either not 
available (in the case if the rims) or rarely seen on the standard 190.


Despite the handling upgrades & sport seats/trim on the 2.6 Limited 
Edition it did not have "Sportline" exterior badging, also the standard 
model designation was omitted on the trunk lid of both models. The 2.6 
did have a Sportline gearshift knob though.

Why no Sportline badges on the front fenders?

Cannot recall what is wrong with the one you have.
Have to suggest that, if the cost of repair is reasonable and the rest 
of the one you have is good, then you are likely better off keeping it.
My truck is in that category. It is an 02 with 170K miles on it and is 
developing a bit of rust on the driver's side rocker panel. Runs good, 
AC works etc. Should consider moving on but cannot see anything I want 
more unless I buy new and I rarely do. Last new one was in 1977. Too 
much $$.


So, I would be fearful of getting into something that has more issues 
than what I already have.


Now, having said that, if your good wife has just come to a point in 
time where she wants, or thinks she wants a different vehicle, then you 
are not going to win this one. Even if she agrees to fix and keep, you 
will likely end up changing vehicles for her in the near future.


So, having said that, I think my advice would be to buy newer and 
probably the newest you think you can afford. Newer vehicles do tend to 
have some advantages - usually safer - and hopefully a lower likelyhood 
of issues. For example, my 02 F150 was 5 years old when I got it and I 
have had it almost 7 years. I have done very little work on it in that 
time. It has thus been very easy to own and that contributes to my 
willingness to keep it for the foreseeable future.


My 2 cents for whatever that is worth.

Get the car with the border collie.  They are great dogs!  I grew up with
one in NYC that treated humans as sheep and tried to herd them. This
involved rooting under ladies' dresses with his snout.  Screams ensured,
but not much hilarity except from me.

Tell her that no matter how much cash you spend there is no guarantee that
even a brand new car will be more reliable.  Just fix the E and call it a
day.  She'll quit whining when you buy her nice things with the car payment
money...lol

I see a lot more newish cars F.O.R.D than E300Ds   (which to me is 
still newish)  I see very few MBs F.O.R.D.


You just need to find something else she wants more than a new car.

No such thing as a cheap Mercedes, if reliability is what you are after.  In my 
mind, the sweet spot for diesel Mercedes is 2005/6.  1998/9 turbo diesel sedan 
would be next, but due to the age maybe not as reliable.

E320 is about as reliable as any newish car.  I'd choose your E300D. 
I think it is the best of the lot. (without seeing pictures...)

Why no Sportline badges on the front fenders?
Did the Sportline seats have those red inserts in them in 1993?
I'd have to take a close look at my 16v and 2.5 turbo before I could say whether 
it's got the Sportline sized steering wheel.


The shift knob doesn't look leather, but I'm not familiar with auto tranny 
Sportlines, I always used to look for manuals.


I don't think those wheels came from a W201.
That 'carbon fiber' in the dash looks aftermarket to me.

I'm thinking that somebody got a hold of a four passenger seat set and modified 
a non-Sportline car's interior, and stuck W124 wheels on it.

Wow, 124 ragtop prices are half what I remember from a few years ago.
I really like green/saddle in those better than white/gray.
Sprinter prices seem to have become even more silly than before.
$22k for a 10 1/2 year old?
The 2004 ML seems reasonably priced.

As to your list, that '94 S350D you found looks interesting too & the'98
S420, very well presented & probably the best of the lot! Wasn't really
impressed with the E320 Cabs you found though. Save up & get a nicer
