The most frustrating experience with android was caller id. In simbian we use key 2 for announcing caller’s name, but I couldn’t find such option or application in android. Sometime caller id works along with ring tone, and sometime it doesn’t. An operating system is the basic software on which the phone runs. Android is an OS from Google, IOS is the OS that runs on Apple devices, Microsoft has Windows Mobile, Nokia used to have Symbian and they also use windows and java as well. A touchscreen is just that, a phone without a physical keypad, and on all the OS platforms mentioned above, there are touchscreen phones. In fact, Apple iPhone is a touchscreen device, and most of the newer android phones are also of the same mode. As for a reasonable budget android phone with good configuration, I would say Xolo Q 700 fits the bill. It started off with a price range just under 1, but has come down a bit more since then. many of us are afraid from touch screen because mobile is an important part of our life. It is not just for calling or sms. Today or tomorro we will have to switch to touch screen phones that is true. But what about speed? I phones are good in terms of accessibility as i have also heard. But they are costlier. And i have always found the discussion of android confusing. I can type on qwerty as good as sighted person. I can type on laptop as well. But i do not think i will be able to use touch screen phone with that much confidence. This is my fear. Even at this time i am chatting on whats app while typing this mail. I think thats why we are crying for nokia. I may sound psyco but i strongly believe that the golden days of mobile using are over in our case. according to me, it is very difficult to operate. Because I already used 1 touch screen mobile, name of that handset is nokia500. It is my brother's mobile. Yes after instaling screen reader, I spent important time to operate properly. But when I keep my finger on the handset, that time it anounce everything. Re: [Mobile.AI] chalanges for totally blind in using touch screen phones.-discuss
Let's take issues one by one. The usability in open environment is really restricted by the fact that our ability to interact through voice gets disabled by the noise around. I faced the problem and the solution is in using the headphone which allowed me to type etc. Use of Fleksy was another beautiful solution to typing which I learnt from this group and tried successfully. While I have found a few things difficult there are also several advantages. I think we will all have problems to begin with but once we are ahead of the learning curve, a more accessible world awaits us. I too am trying Samsung Grand in addition to I5 and will get back with the experience in due course. Regards. Re: [Mobile.AI] chalanges for totally blind in using touch screen phones.-discuss
Hi accessindians, Although it may be a dis advantage for many or some of us to use a touch screen phones, there are some advantages as well. For instance there were many apps we couldn't use tdue to in accessibility of the apps on the symbian with screen readers. But look at the number of apps we can use on the IOS or on the android. Right from performing the basic tasks, such as call managements, up to using GPS, playing games etc. Playing games, which was not at all possible on a symbian phone, except for those, who had Mobile spealk. So it's up to every individual; How does he/she takes the use of touch screen. it may be of fun for some of us, as they might feel, that using a touch screen phone is a revolution for the blind folks. Or some may take this as total disappointment, as they can not take full advantage of each and every function of their phone, dispight of paying so much money, like a customer without disability pays. This is my thinking. Please do not take it personal. Thanks, Bhavesh. More than the transition itself, the more difficult part is to take the plung. But ones you do that and overcome the initial instinct against change, things can fall into place. I had aganized long and hard before taking the plunge towards the touchscreen interface, but after I overcame the same, things have started working absolutely fine. I am using Xolo Q 700, a fully touchscreen phone running Android 4.2. To dial buttons during calls, put the phone on speaker by doubltapping audio switch, and then doubletap dialpad icon. Both are available towards the lower part of the phone. After that, doubletap the number you need, Talkback works absolutely fine while on call. first of all thank you sir for starting this useful discussion. I had same issues when i was thinking to buy an android device. And i have bored our friends like anything with my childish questions. This is not only yours problem. Even i was afraid to touch screen when i can work on any mobile without any screen reader. I have seen many sighted who do not want to use touch screen phone. But in our case as you said we do not have any option. So accept this reality of touch screen. I am using xolo q700 from 10 days, and believe me it is not as tough as i thought. I agree that without sight it is tough to operate but possibilities are there. So happy learning. On 9/24/13, Mahesh S. Hi Friends, hitherto I have been using N-79. However, motivated by this encouraging discussion, I too would like to experiment with Androit phone. So please guide me that for a novice like me, which Androit mobile will be best suited with a low budget, say, around rs. 10,000, for initial period? I had same issues when i was thinking to buy an android device. And i have bored our friends like anything with my childish questions. This is not only yours problem. Even i was afraid to touch screen when i can work on any mobile without any screen reader. I have seen many sighted who do not want to use touch screen phone. But in our case as you said we do not have any option. So accept this reality of touch screen. I am using xolo q700 from 10 days, and believe me it is not as tough as i thought. I agree that without sight it is tough to operate but possibilities are there. So happy learning. On 9/24/13, Mahesh S.
