A nice portrayal of Times Square. I might have pulled the highlights down a bit
more and boosted the shadows a little, but would have to see what you had to
work with.

Times Square has become a Disneyland for tourists, but I don't miss the bad old
days. In 1980 one would be accosted by hookers and drug dealers when walking
through Times Square, which I did daily on my way to and from work. The
businesses were camera stores that ripped off tourists, titty bars, porn
bookstores and fast food joints that specialized in salmonella. Theaters were
closing monthly. I was accosted at gun point in broad daylight on 44th street
just west of Broadway. The detritus of the Lindsey administration and Times
Square character. I'll take Disneyland.

Maybe not artistic, but any opportunity to practice lighting and

Shooting Alina well was a fabulous challenge for me because she's an
average sized woman rather than the usual size 0-2 fashion models I've
worked with. But she has no body image issues at all and we could
discuss the merits of poses and what would be complimentary to her
shape without having to speak in code. I learned so much in our 5 hour

Thanks, Paul. Exposure there was difficult, and used up every stop of DR. If
I shoot there again, I'll use ISO 1600 instead of 3200, which would give me a

exposure drowned the shadows in noise.

Other than the dull sky I rather like it. Hope you do too. Comments welcome.

I'm thinking more about the late 50's and early 60's , actually, when

But after the clean-up there was a brief period where it was cleaned

That's true. There was a transitional period in the early nineties when it was
in a kind of equilibrium. But there was a need to make it financially viable.
And the huge Marriott hotel brought in thousands of German and Japanese
tourists every week. It's not great now, but it can be a bit of fun. Great
place for people pics. And I think the theaters and restaurants are doing well
again. It could be a lot worse.

Torn posters are a bit of a cliche, but not necessarily a bad one.

This one has too much white for my taste - it lacks balance.
A calendar of them could work, but would be difficult.
Each one would have to be very distinct,

Yeah quite right - and that's my trouble/challenge with it.. although this
particular one is pretty much my favorite of a few I've collected.
It's an experiment.

So how do you like Frankenthaler? Hans Hoffman? Frank Stella?

I'm afraid I don't know much about American art or abstract expressionism,

so I had to Google them. I'd need to look more closely before I formed
an opinion.

aah - Well I shouldn't have used Frank Stella except for the redundancy
factor - but my found collages remind me of Frankenthaler and Hoffman.

My reference point for torn poster photos is Ernst Haas.

hmm - well a quick review on line and I would say that the
percentage of Haas's stuff that bears some resemblence to the
torn pages is roughly the same as they bear in mine - mostly
it isn't my thing.. but occasionally it is.

And someone (BRuce?) mentioned Aaron Siskind - which is spot on,
although his pattern shots are black and white.

thanks for a good critique - sorry I'm not in actual street mode these days.

How often did you have to wipe the steam off your lens?

One does love a hot bath - but I think that is prohibited there now.

Cheating? Debatable. Innovative? Certainly. This is how progress is made.
Just compare today's F1 cars with those of the 60's.

In the 1970's, the English Flying Dutchman sailor, Rodney Pattisson (World
Olympic Champ), claimed to have developed a new jointed centreboard which
allowed his boat to point a few degrees higher. It was banned before it even
saw the light of day. Perhaps it never existed?
