[RBW] Wanted 68cm Quickbeam

2012-04-26 Thread Abcyclehank
Somehow I keep losing out on these large singlespeeds. Some large
individual must have a neglected one hanging around unused enough. I
am willing to pay cash now or will accept cash and bike or frame
towards a like new 64 Bombadil campy MTB component build beast. Or a
73cm Mark N. Custom built country like road bike that I might be
willing to part with if anyone wants to maintain their herd at a
constant factor to avoid Rivendell withdrawal symptoms.
Sincerely,
Ryan

Joan, do you ever pop out the fenders when you have a string of no-rain
days and throw'em on for wet ones? Does the frame lend itself to this or is
clearance tight enough that fenders stay put? I ask because I'm currently
looking to buy a Bleriot and set it up as a rando all-day-er.

[RBW] rack suggestions

2012-04-26 Thread oren
well i have a newer atlantis and i cant help but notice the threaded holes
at the top of the fork (fork shoulder). does anyone know of any racks that
would mount into these threads? i would prefer a porteur or cargo style
rack. i have a paul flatbed rack, and yet i dont like how it mounts on the
quill stem, i feel it makes the front of the bike look too "busy". since
the threaded holes are there, id love to use them. any suggestions?

One more try - I have for sale a Nitto M12 rack - it was used for

cantilever adapter studs that allow the proper use of both rack and
cantilevers on your bike.

$85.00 shipped CONUS. PayPal only please - Thanks all!

[RBW] WTT: 56 cm Hillborne for something with more clearance and off-road capability.

2012-04-26 Thread Z
I've moved southeast Utah and I plan to stay a while. The bike is a
56 cm double TT Waterford-built beauty in orange and I love it, but
fatter tires would be ideal. I'd throw down some cash to trade up to
an Atlantis or Bombadil. I'm thinking frame, fork, headset, bottom
bracket, and wheelset (if necessary). My PBH is approximately 85 cm.

Cheers!

[RBW] Powder Coating recommendations in Boston?

2012-04-26 Thread Rich Parr
Slightly off-topic (and potentially heretical), but I'm looking for a good
powder coater to help with a restoration of a 1986 Trek 620. I guess you
could call this a poor man's Riv project. Anyhow, I'm hoping to find
someone with experience with lugged frames, as this one as some great
details I'd hate to cover up too thickly. Also have the original blackburn
racks I'm hoping to coat to match. Would prefer powder over paint for
durability issues -- I'm fixing up this bike to use as my primary ride. Any
advice or experience, about Boston-area operations or about powder coating
in general, would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Rich

Soapscum - do you know for sure what type of riding you will want to
do with the Atlantis?  I ask because lately I have been using mine as
a mountain bike on smooth but technical singletrack here in north
Idaho and wonder if the larger frame coupled with 700c wheels might
make trail riding a little trickier considering the boys downstairs.
Also, ask yourself what width tires you will use.  I run 50mm actual
Michelin Country Dry2 ($13 each! 600g) and they subtract from
standover significantly.

[RBW] Seattle Grant Peterson book tour - May 11

2012-04-26 Thread Brian Hanson
For those list members that haven't signed up at FreeRange, here's the
timing details on Grant's Seattle visit. Hope you all can show up. We
will have about an hour to make a ride of it, and he is bringing a folding
bike, so we will likely stay on a trail so as not to get caught in the
dark. Bring your friends!

Brian Hanson
Seattle, WA

Hi there,

Grant Peterson will be at FreeRange Cycles Friday May 11th. He will do a
book presentation from 5-5:30, a question and answer session from 5:30-6pm
and a bike ride from 6-7pm. We will have books here to sell.

Hope you can make it!

Either 56 or 58 would work. The 56 takes 26" wheels, which buys slightly
fatter tire clearance and less "toe overlap", if you care about such things.

I'm not quite 5'10" and have a PBH of 84.5. I ride a 56cm Atlantis - it's
fine but I'm pretty sure a 58cm would work for me. My Rambouillet is a 58cm
and that works very well. Check Grant's fit charts and information for more
guidance.

[RBW] Re: It must be the easy dope

2012-04-26 Thread soapscum
We get a few tourists in Seattle from time to time, too. Many from
Japan and points west. They can often be entertaining to watch taking
pictures of the rain, posing with transients and totem poles in
Pioneer Square... but mostly just wandering out into traffic. They
stick out like sore thumbs because Seattleites are notorious about
crossing with the light. You get used to it, but if I'm feeling
especially misanthropic (it happens; I blame the rain), I just avoid
those parts of town where they congregate, even if they are mostly
pretty nice. I'm sure I was a clueless yob when I was traveling the
low countries in my 20s on my old Rockhopper...

I'm on the lookout for an Atlantis in the not-right-now-but-pretty-

[RBW] Re: new Hillborne

2012-04-26 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
Not very different, really. Having different rack arrangements is likely the
biggest difference i'll have between them at any given time. Redundancy is a
major goal. However, the setup for each bike is "fluid" in some sense; I have 5
cockpits that work on either. Albatross (one Thumbie, one bar-end), Bullmoose,
Moustache, Noodle. And as soon as I can get my hands on the Bosco 58cm bar
(non-moose), I'll have a half-dozen. DaVinci couplers are my friends.

Either bike can be a grocery hauler, a commuter, a camper, a recreational
rider, a grand-day-out'er. And Orange has been all of these things, over and
over. Green will simply share the burden. And now re-configuration or
maintenance will not have to fit into the window between commutes!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

[RBW] Re: new Hillborne

2012-04-26 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I have indeed found the bike I love.

The rear Platrack with SlickerSack seems so obvious as a practical way to haul
stuff that I'm a little surprised it wasn't at least part of the marketing. If
it has some fatal flaw then I've yet to discover it on my initial ride. It
works beautifully. I haven't fine tuned the fit yet; I need to shave the struts
and/or adjust the height on the Mark's rack. I may end up with two sets of
Platack struts if I can't find common ground between the Mini in front and the
Mark's in back. (I certainly want to maintain the potential for using the
Platrack in the front. Who knows; I may end up with two Platracks at some
point.)

although they may obstruct the side view, they surely won't obstruct the

Or, of course, you could mount a light on the rear fender. Assuming you
have a rear fender. (But then, in the desert where "normal" humidity is
in the single digits and cactus is locally called "grass" why would you
have a rear fender?)

Re: [RBW] Conundrum: where to place tail lights?

2012-04-26 Thread PATRICK MOORE
And I've got one! I knew it was bright but didn't bother to discover the
make and model.

Perhaps that's the answer, that and the mini-mag red LED under the
chainstay (the rubber block/velcro mount and the sturdy maglite make this
viable in what is a position prone to being knocked about. I can always buy
a second Radbot and devise another place on the bag to clip it to. Or clip
it to the waist-attached reflective triangle that I just got from Riv.

So this extended discussion hasn't been all vapor and wasted breath after
all. That's good, because I really want to use a small saddlebag more or
less permanently attached with panniers added at need.

Thanks.

I use both rack-n-panniers and saddlebag (Banana currently; hope to trade a
nice Banana for a Junior) on the Fargo which of course limits suitable
placement for rear lights. I've got a bright flasher clamped to the lower
seatpost and (17" M frame) thus low enough to peep coyly from under the Banana
and over the rear tire AND between the struts of the rack's front vertical, but
this is obivously not the best place. I've got a 2AA red LED maglite clamped
under the left chainstay.

Suggestions for other, better placements, or am I SOL? Lights will have to deal
with off road riding and having the bike stuffed rudely into the back of a
small car, so end-of-rack does not work, at least as tried so far, since the
lights continually get knocked out of position when placed there.

Also, helmet mounting is out.

I do use plenty of reflective matieral, for what that's worth.

Thanks.

A couple of people have suggested seatstays, but panniers don't allow this.

I think I caught something after being out in all the cold and in the
wilderness last weekend.

I'm feeling like I need more clearance for bigger tires, more braze- ons, a
kick stand plate, and a generator hub/light set up. The symptoms of my illness
seems to have come back after ten years remission.

[RBW] Aussie ss woolie

2012-04-26 Thread Steven Frederick
Any one have one of the Aussie short sleeved wool t shirts from the big Riv
sale that they aren't using much? Men's medium (preferred) or large, any
color but black, pretty much. Willing to buy or do a partial trade for my
small sleeveless blue from same sale. (or other wool items or bike bits
you might need)

Thanks, Steve

Steve:

I am a Riv-aholic.

At first it was a numbered Bridgestone here and there, then there was
a Rambouillet... Now the issues swirl; wide range double 110 BCD vs
triple, generator hubs/logs vs battery units, rack/bag combos, bars,
etc.

I'm going to have to make some steady progress on the house renovation
to reach the level of rationalization this may require.

I've seen plenty of bikes with one or even two Planet Bike blinkies

I use a Superflash on my saddlebag and these

on the seat stays. These are by no means high quality lights but they
are cheap and I think improve visibility a lot.
