Hi all,

Does anyone see a chance to get hands on the post-mortem they
(hopefully) write about the phone outage from last week?

I'm very interested in technical details, as I always feel that from
such stories we can all learn and improve.

Cheers,

[swinog] RIPE Atlas probes as SW

2020-02-14 Diskussionsfäden Steven.Glogger
Hi There

Just saw this post by RIPE:
https://labs.ripe.net/Members/alun_davies/ripe-atlas-software-probes

RIPE Atlas probes are now available as software, offering future hosts a new
way to help build the RIPE Atlas network. While not a replacement for their
hardware counterparts, software probes will improve coverage by bringing RIPE
Atlas to new and previously hard-to-reach places.

How cool is that?! 😊

greetings

Re: [swinog] Missing DNS A records for several domains hosted by swisscom.com

2020-02-08 Diskussionsfäden Steven.Glogger
Hi All

Just to give you an update on what happened here:
- the old platform has been removed/migrated last fall; the A record has been
removed in january
- all active customers and domains have been migrated
- we have no customer complaints
- there are some customers, which haven't updated their DNS after several
reminders (I suppose these are customers which decided not to continue with the
service)
- the technical people checked their config and are not missing any entries

-> so in short: customer / domain owner problem not Swisscom.

Wish you a nice weekend,

It looks like that the affected domain names have not been updated to
the (new) MX hosts:

mx01.mailsecurity.swisscom.com.
mx02.mailsecurity.swisscom.com.

So, I guess its a domain owner problem and not a Swisscom problem.

For example, spital-lachen.ch used to have
mtainXX.mailsecurity.swisscom.com. until June 2019 and has since moved
to mxXX.mailsecurity.swisscom.com.

Gruss Xaver

Did you turn off and on the device once since the high packet loss started?
Eventually it could create a more stable DSL link.
Could be noise from neighbors lines.

I am not sure if mine will help, but it is probably worth a try.
Else you should probably escalate this to your ISP, which then would check with
Swisscom.

Greetings everyone!

Team Cymru has been tracking bogons since 2002, and announcing them to
this mailing list since January 2003, but it is time to say farewell to
the mailing list. As you are likely aware, in February of this year
IANA allocated the final five /8 networks from the free pool. While
individual RIRs continue to hold considerable IPv4 space, the purpose of
this list has been to make announcements regarding these "traditional"
bogon /8s, and thus, it is time to bring it to a close.

That said, we continue to provide a wealth of bogon information in our
bogon reference pages:

https://www.team-cymru.org/Services/Bogons/

and we continue to track the relatively new "fullbogons" for both IPv4
and IPv6. For those not familiar with fullbogons, this project tracks
unallocated IPv4 and IPv6 space at a more granular level than the
traditional bogons, making use of the RIRs' lists of delegated prefix
and calculating the inverse to list those prefixes which have not been
delegated, and thus should not be seen on the Internet. This list is
quite rapidly changing and updated multiple times per day, so we
strongly advise that it be consumed via an automatically updated method,
such as by querying our DNS zone or peering with our fullbogon route
servers via BGP.

All of our bogon information will continue to be maintained and updated
for the forseeable future. We also do not have any immediate plans to
shut down the traditional bogon BGP routeservers or remove that
information from our web site, though we do expect it to remain largely
static, barring any changes to the martians by RFC activity.

Don't forget that Team Cymru is more than just "the bogon people" too!
We provide a wide range of insight designed to help improve lives and
keep your networks safe and secure. I'll list several projects
involving sharing this insight below, and you can always find more on
our web sites:

TC Console is a web based user interface designed for network
administrators/operators, providing a variety of Team Cymru's insight as
it applies to your specific network, including both near real time
alerting and historical data. More details can be found here:

https://www.team-cymru.org/Services/TCConsole/

The Malware Hash Registry provides a look-up service for SHA1s and MD5s
of potentially malicious binaries, allowing you to find the last time we
analyzed a file, and an approximate percentage of anti-virus engines
that detected the file as malicious. MHR's companion tools include
WinMHR for scanning of Windows systems, a Mac OS X MHR Dashboard Widget,
and a Firefox MHR add-on for MHR scanning of downloaded files. You can

The IP to ASN Mapping project provides an easy-to-use set of interfaces
to answer the question of "who routes the network containing A.B.C.D?"
These interfaces include traditional TCP/43 WHOIS, DNS, and HTTP/HTTPS.
A wide range of data can be returned in response to your queries, and
both bulk and individual query styles are supported. Check out all the
details at:

Finally, Team Cymru is all about sharing insight, and we're doing that
in the social networking space as well! We provide many nuggets of
insight and interesting security news stories via Twitter, and offer a
regular video show on YouTube sharing insight, experience, and advice on
a wide variety of security topics. We also provide an Internet Security
News Feed in cooperation with E-Secure-IT, keeping you on top of all the
events in the Internet Security world. You can check all of these out
at the URLs below:

We appreciate all of your support over the years, and look forward to
continuing to provide actionable and useful insight to improve lives for
many years to come. If you have any questions, would like more
information about any of our services, etc, you are always welcome to
contact team-cy...@cymru.com and we'll make sure your inquiry gets to

Re: [swinog] RANCID alternative

2010-10-12 Diskussionsfäden Steven.Glogger
I read some of your wiki/files to see the project and it looks promising to me.

I fully support andy's statement ,-)
What I missed in Rancid was the option to extend commands per chassis / type.
Especially new devices such as ASR1k & Co. are not known and therefore some
stuff is missing.
Other stuff has to be excluded (e.g. tracelogs & foo.bar files which are
generated daily) for specific models.

What is also important is the option to use the tools to do some mass-updates
(like with 'clogin'), maybe this can be improved with some intelligent feedback
options (e.g. task: "update interface" -> was is ok or did it failed? or IOS
upgrades - maybe with some options to do rollbacks?).
Sometimes we update ~4k CPE's with clogin and parsing / checking the output can
be painful ,-)

But to come back to needed features for at least me to replace rancid:
- CVS storage of configs (--> cvsweb.cgi to see / compare them)
- threaded / parallel collection --> must be speedy ,) (we have ~5-6k devices
in rancid; working fine today)
- optional mail notification of diff's (e.g. by some categories? like a change
in interface ip's trigger an update? but then ignore configuration changes for
VRF's to trigger a mail - but keep them in config-CVS ,-))
- toolset to access / massupdate devices
- configuration with wildcard syntax (we use "vpn-*" as hostname with separate
login for CPE's than core devices - different policies must be configurable ->
see .cloginrc )
- must support more than one vendor - and be flexible (we hacked in something
for Quagga, some differt cisco policies, etc.)
- should exist as a FreeBSD Port *smile*

if you need any help in modules (especially cisco modules) let me know.

Hi, Stanislav, everyone --

This is great news, we use rancid all of the time, and find that adding
functionality and bespoke behaviour is quite hard work, further when we deviate
our custom changes to the scripts it makes it harder to track mainline rancid
releases. I love your idea to make the custom behaviour work as pure
configuration and via a plugin architecture.

Please do preserve the best features of rancid, the main is that configuration
is backed up into a version control system, so inspecting former config dating
back months or years is possible. Using svn rather than cvs would be nice so
that we can run it alongside our codebase. A choice of version control back
ends would make a lot of people happy I think. :-) Also, make sure there is an
option to 'blank out' passwords in the stored configuration.

Some way to import the former rancid cvs database might be a neat feature, but
we can probably survive without this by running rancid in parallel with your
software for six months or a year.

It's really important that a community grows around this software, so that we
can both contribute and download plugins for many vendors and config dialects.
I'd be delighted to volunteer mailing list hosting. I also would really like to
follow development in an rss format so that I can tune our noc guys in and we
can start to help with testing and building the community when the features we
really need are in the software.

Congratulations on getting this far, good luck, and ask for help before you
need it :-)

[swinog] Performance Problems today...

2010-05-07 Diskussionsfäden Steven.Glogger
hi all

it seems that some customers calling in with performance problems.
we've noticed that those customers are using astaro-firewalls.

heise is already reporting...

i suspect DNS inspection problems (yesterday last root-server went DNSSEC).
probably more issues will come up since all root-servers are now DNSSEC? i dont
know ,-)

just for you to know, if customers are calling in...

[swinog] Port 25 Blockade @ Swisscom (Bluewin)

2010-03-08 Diskussionsfäden Steven.Glogger
Hi everyone

To officially talk about the "mail problems on port 25 with swisscom dsl" I
would like to give you some (technical) information.

We had several needs to stop spam from our network:
- We're receiving about 30'000-100'000 abuse complaints per month (contains
multiple reports per case)
- Mail filtering on our infrastructure (our mail servers) are only catching 20%
of all spam sent from swisscom dsl - 80% is sent directly from the customer
lines. (source: http://www.maawg.org/port25)
- About 60% to over 90% of all mails sent over residential customer lines are
identified as spam. This is more than 10 millions spam emails per day (~375
terabytes per year)

The impacts are clear:
- Spam generates a quite high amount of cost within Swisscom (money, personal,
time, storage, data, etc.)
- Our reputation is getting bad
- We might get listed on blacklists (-> impact on legimite traffic)
- Customers are getting blocked (e.g. in sandbox) and are not happy therefore
(most of the customers are not realizing, that they are sending spam, because
they are virus-/trojan-infected)

So, what we did and what are we doing?

We currently ran a pilot. The productive rollout which will affect all
customers will start this week and will take around 2 months until all
customers are migrated. Only (ex-)bluewin customers with dynamic adsl-lines
will be affected.
Swisscom has published an official statement on http://www.swisscom.ch/p25 and
modifies the error-message sent to the customer which will be more clearer.
The pilot showed very clearly that this countermeasure is very effectful in
stopping outgoing spam.

Going to the technical part:
We're running a transparent proxy on port 25 (smtp) which gets communication
from any customer to any port 25 (Layer 4 redirect feature).
The proxy is analyzing the email and if it detects that spam has been sent he
will reject the connection by issuing an error message to the customer (the
mailclient will notice: smtp-error). If the mail is a normal and legitimate
email -> no problem: mail will be sent. We will even insert a "received-from:"
line in the header. If a bot/trojan is trying to send emails, the customer will
not notice. There are no mails beeing stored on the filter server. All
decisions are made on-the-fly.
Customers, which are virus-affected are handled by the standard abuse process
which we have in place (inform, quarantine in a sandbox, etc.).

The option for layer 4 redirect is activated via radius - so it can be turned
off on request and the customer just has to reconnect.
For dynamic customers the option will be activated by default.

Customers are asked to authenticate their smtp session and use the mail
submission port 587 (not filtered).

So, will this affect non-smtp traffic on port 25? Unfortunately, yes. This
traffic will be lost. If the customer has a need to use port 25 for other
purposes than email he can request turning of the redirecting feature.

If a customer usses SSL via port 25 does it work? No, it will be dropped.
Customers are kindly requested to use port 465 instead.

If a customer uses smtp auth via port 25, will this work? He will receive a
smtp error like "sorry, smtp auth not possible. use 587" (error 573).

Will we start to block completely port 25 in the future? No, absolutely not.

So, I hope things are now getting clearer ,-)

Greetings

-steven

ns2/3 = slaves (which are public to the customers)

sql stuff are solved by master-master replication setups (quite easy for

actually, irc.swinog.ch is still alive - if you're peering over swissix or get
the swissix prefix.
if you're outside of the 'swissix-network' you can can use:

- irc.subcult.ch:6667
- irc.nazgul.ch:6667

[swinog] special mail solution?

2009-05-15 Diskussionsfäden Steven.Glogger
hi there

i'm just looking if someone knows a _simple_ way / tool:
- should be a POP3 AND IMAP server
- it should accept ANY username / password
- it should present ONE predefined email to the customer (to inform him about
something) - if the customer later is trying to get mails he should not get it
again (per username base)
- it should be opensource ,-) - and should preferably run on FreeBSD

does someone knows about some application which fits my requirements?

you know, swisscom is quite a big company. swisscom dsl might be more than one
team.
if you have line problems contact your provider or account manager.

what you described is actually

a) quite expensive to build. I would estimate the development work as few
hundred thousand euro, if not more -- if we're talking of a consumer-ready
product, not just a bunch of sources everyone is free to compile at his own
risk :)

b) is what the car manufacturers should sponsor, as it's them who is interested
in selling more cars with luxury options like you've mentioned :)

since this recent DDoS related change I cannot reach any of the listed IRC

would be great if somebody could fix this..

[swinog] crypto performance of cisco 2800 series vs AIM-VPN/SSL2

2008-04-29 Diskussionsfäden Steven.Glogger
hi all

we're troubleshooting some performance issues on a cisco 2801 with
onboard crypto engine (not with an additional AIM-VPN/SSL2).
the problem is that in the DMVPN setup (crypted tunnel) we have a
thruput of around 4mbit with 90% of CPU.
according to the cisco specs we should reach 30-40mbit of encrypted
traffic... but our tests are ... well.. not that positive...

do you have made similar experiences?

so, does someone has a AIM-VPN/SSL2 for a cisco 2800series around which
we could lend out for some days to perform some tests?

Betreff: [swinog] KVM-over-IP

hi boys & girls

i'm looking for a nice (and of course cheap) solution for a KVM-over-IP
(VGA,USB for keyboard, mouse; some mice need PS/2 adapters) switch for my
windows servers. a port capacity >=16 ports would be appreciated.
some VNC solution would be great.
does someone has a good experience with a product? some recommendations?
as i said: i'm not looking for the rollsroyce-priced tool ,-)

Here we are again and for the exact same case!

Shall we just copy/paste the Rekurs/recours we sent last time ? Shall we
use the last case as precedence-case ? (since we actually won).

Again, they are acting like #$%^$# like we're bored and have nothing
else to take care about.

Sunrise lawyers did a pretty good job last time, can we count on you ?

PS: If you dont understand anything here, you are not concerned.

I could give you these back in a week or two.

RE: [swinog] MPLS VRF source routing (inter-vrf routing)

2007-10-01 Diskussionsfäden Steven.Glogger
hi all

after a long time and a lot of discussions with cisco - some update for the
community on this topic:
it is not possible (according to cisco engineers).

but there is a small 'but':
- probably next year there will be a new IOS for the cisco 7200 enabling this
feature
- it could be that some images for the cisco 7600 are supporting this inter-vrf
feature

not really ;-)
should be routed not somewhere natted...

in reality the 10.0.1.0/29 is a DMZ range which is public.

Subject: [swinog] MPLS VRF source routing (inter-vrf routing)

hi all

i've got some nice cisco bugs / features / whatever.

some prerequisites:

- 2 VRFs: vrf blue and vrf red
- both vrfs have a different default route.
- a PPP session / user terminating in vrf blue

a specific route (10.0.1.0/29) is routed over static route (e.g. radius
avpair) over the ppp session (vrf blue).
this route is imported to vrf red by importing rd values and route-map
filtering.
so the connectivity from the red vrf to the vrf blue is working (one way).

so, the goal (and this is the problem) is traffic souring that specific route
should go back to vrf red.

how i thought would be the simplest way to do it: policy routing.

interface virtual-access123
 ip policy route-map set-vrf-red
...
!

access-list 110 permit 10.0.1.0 0.0.0.7 any

route-map set-vrf-red permit 10
 match ip address 110
 set vrf red
!

would be the nicest way of doing this.

now the but: if you put the policy on the virtual-template / radius profile the
session starts flapping (connect/disconnect/connect/disconnect). so: not
usable.

my other approach was:

interconnect vrf blue with vrf red by a vlan / interface.
assume on vrf blue: fastethernet0/0 with 11.0.0.1/30 connnected to vrf red with
fastethernet0/1 with 11.0.0.2/30.

modifying the route map to:

route-map set-vrf-red permit 10
 match ip address 110
 set interface fastethernet0/0
 set ip next-hop 11.0.0.2
!

this will stop the flapping (disconnect/connect/disconnect...) of the ppp
session and the whole routing works as expected BUT: somewhen it stops
working because of one thousand possible CEF bugs ;-(

i have to put "no ip route-cache cef" on the interconnection interface, then it
works. some hours later (as already said) it stops working. when i do again "no
ip route-cache cef" on the interface it works some other hours.

i've tried several IOS for the C7200series and the only half-way working
version is the 12.4T (or even 12.3T).

so, now the big question to the community:

1) do you see any other working way doing source-routing from one vrf to
another vrf?
(there's a vrf source routing command, but i think this will really not
scale)

2) do you have encountered the same CEF bugs? (i have seen them on 7206,
1841 and 2851 series routers)

how cisco tells me to do it:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1838/products_feature_
guide09186a0080296409.html

i would be glad to get some input from you guys.

greetings

hi swinog members

we have the need to rollout a pppoe setup on our dsl colocations where
static ip with mtu 1500 is actually in place.

as i know many postings around the world regarding pppoe mtu problems
and advices to customers to reduce mtu on their clients down to 1492, i
wanted to ask for a feedback from you if you all have pppoe with 1500
(=1492) in place or someone uses pppoe with 1508 from cpe to
pppoe-server?
if you use 1500: are the mentioned problems with websites (eg: gmx) or
ipsec setups still an issue ?

thanx and best regards from austria to our neighbors bernd spiess /

(i have seen them on 7206,
1841 and 2851 series routers)

how cisco tells me to do it:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/iosswrel/ps1838/products_feature_
guide09186a0080296409.html

i would be glad to get some input from you guys.

greetings

hi all

after our office relocation to altstetten we have a lot of technical
stuff, we don't need anymore. we would like to give this stuff away to
people who can use this. i dont know, if verythink is fully functional
working or complete, but the most should be:

- a lot of schmid watson 3 modems (x.21 interface) incl. cables
- a lot of schmid watson 4 modems (x.21 interface) incl. cables
- 1x skynet laser link pair
- 5x 19" targa professional 1996A SL monitor (sorry, no TFT)
- 1x blackbox microNTU G.703 converter
- 3x ISDN Zyxel 2864i modem (some without power adapter)
- 2x ascend TNT access server
- some cisco V.35 cables
- 2x lucent portmaster 3 (1- and 2-pri version; with k56flex modules)
- IMC power chassis + ipMux TP/5 card (10mbit)
- some very old cisco routers (805, 877, 1600, ...)
- some small video cameras for CCTV
- skycache stuff (for sat. ip feed)
- some colt modems
- a lot of zyxel prestige 600series and 780series
- at lot of differnt cables (dont ask me what kind of ... ,- ))
- some keyboards (non-US)
- a console switch (with db-25 ports, but i've not found yet the cables)
- 2x cisco 500 cache engines

maybe there are some furnitures or so someone can use (desks, etc.).

we're asking nothing for this equipment, but i think it would be fair if
you sponsor something for our team (can be money, beer, cakes, presents,
etc...)

please drop me an email, if you're interested in.
if so, i will be in the old office thursay (8. march) from 16:00 to
18:30 o'clock.

Hi Maillist,

SPF is starting to become a topic at our company again - ^^ - and I'm
now interested:

- who does not use SPF
- who implemented SPF DNS entries
- who uses SPF for matching
- who fully uses SPF ^^ lolz

I'm just trying to get a general feeling again about what the
community thinks about SPF.

Kind regards,

Daniel
